Secondly, The boss seemed a little easier than I thought it'd be. Perhaps that's because you were so well prepared. Either way, great job! :3

Bombs are essential.

And it helps to have a gun or a scepter to dispatch the smaller enemies that spawn, plus the cavemen.

99.8 came out a while ago.. did you forget to check updates for a while?

The altar system is awesome. Check the Spelunky Wiki for details on the points of all enemy bodies, and the prizes you can get by obtaining certain amounts of points.

Nah, I had it, I just hadn't played it yet. I saw my first altar earlier and got useless spectacles, it will take some luck getting a good level for it it seems.

You can also get other items at that first prize level. If you already have Udjat Eye or the Spectacles, you'll get the next item on the list, which is climbing gloves. If you have those, too, then spring shoes, spike shoes, and finally the compass.

It only takes a few stunned yetis, or 2 stunned cultists to get your first health boost (you get 50% more favor if they're not dead.)

Hey man, spectacles aren't useless! Sometimes shotguns or even jetpacks will be emedded in the wall tiles. :D

Yes, but you can and usually want to get that artifact in the locked chest on like level TWO sometimes, and it is superior in every way!

What altar? You can sacrifice for health? Where is this in Spelunky?

Altars were added in 99.8. You drop dead or unconscious beings on them to sacrifice for stuff. You get 50% more favor for sacrificing a live, unconscious enemy. You can do: vampires shopkeepers, cultists, cavemen, damsels, yetis, and unconscious man-eating plants.

The first reward is an item, the second is health, the third is 99 bombs, and past that is more health.

The Spelunky Wiki outlines how much favor each creature grants, and how much favor it takes to get each prize.

Just keep trying, and learn to be VERY CAREFUL. Always look ahead for traps as much as possible, and learn to time your jumps and whips when attacking enemies. Try to steal a shopkeeper's gun, or buy/find one.

"Oh, I see, you thought I was going to spoil the ending".. Lol.. Yeah, this game was too hard, I gave up on wanting to win I never even got to #2-- altars.

I had given up on making progress for a while, too... but recently I became obsessed with completing the game. This was my second win. I don't have a best time yet, because I always start from either the Ice or the Temple shortcut.
