  • I wish I could play like that and make my mind travel in time!

  • @douskara

    Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Absolutely great. I just got lost in that beautiful music.

  • @leapingbunny

    Thank you very much ;-)

  • i have an 8 string guitar and its fun to play i can only think of what oplaying this would be like its sounds amazing wounderful to the ears

  • its amazing the way you play, have you thought although to share the scores??? I mean, I would really like to play that beautiful song and I think im not the only one...I've already looked for the score but it isnt for lute,,,,you could share or sell youre Lute song´s scores...specially Bach song's, they're all gorgeous...greetings maestro.

  • @autentik0pip0

Hello, thanks for your message. About scores, the arrangement by Gusta Goldschmidt is published by Tree editions (easy to find on the net).

    Good luck !

  • marvelous!

  • @frenk1973

    Thank you ;-)

  • Beautiful!!

  • What key is this suite in??and also how many basses to you need to retune??!!yes the standard tuning is DM but what i find is a pain with the baroque lute is retuning to play in another key why i am learning them on guitar..not as nice but less hastle!!

  • @Robinom

Here the suite is transposed in C Major (so only the bass 5 (12th course) to retune.

There is a nice book of 80 easy pieces for baroque lute, edition of the French Lute Society (vol. 34), with at the end the different tuning of basses according to the different keys, very useful !

  • @Luthval

thankyou very much for the info!!Not as bad as i thought!i will have to get the easy piece book and also the bach book!all the best

  • JUST WONDERFUL ON YOUR LUTE, BRAVO!!!!!

  • @francello75

    Thanks ;-)

  • I concur, Bach's cello suites are unbelievably beautiful and full for one instrument.

  • @Bassist10288

One of my all time favorite music... (Bach cello's suites)

  • i have an important question: what is the baroque lute tune?

    thank you very mutch

  • @Mr98giuliano

Baroque lute is tuned in Dm. Look the entry for lute in wikipedia to have complete tuning. ;-)

  • Very nice, Luthval. I like this transctption a lot! Btw, how about the lute works of Bach? In fact, almost all of what Bach wrote is quite beautiful....

  • @hermx0

We don't know if lute works are really for lute (or for lute harpsichord) and in fact they are really difficult to play on the instrument (at least for me... some do...)

I played the sarabande ob BWV 995...and will play some other but not all...

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • A touch of class brought to YouTube. Thanks!

  • @TreyRoque

    Thanks a lot ;-)

  • Don't worry about playing how well you play Bach, because I can't play dowland that well. You've done yourself a fine job at playing Bach's works on this instrument.

  • @jeiluifang

    Thank you very much ;-)

    Val

  • Sounds really good! Thoose deep basses adds something a guitar can never get. Emotional I think you pretty much nailed it as well. Best Regards /Kristian

  • This music is so beautifully written... a great pleasure to play it.

    Thanks

    Val

  • Llevo mucho tiempo viendo sus vídeos de laúd. Sus interpretaciones me parecen excelentes. Mi más sincera enhorabuena. Le adjunto un vídeo mío con una Fantasía del Kellner. Un saludo desde España.

  • Gracias (my spain language is so poor...)

    Val ;-)

(I'm going to listen to your Kellner now !)

    Best regards

    Val

  • This is going to sound cheezy, but I was briefly struggling with a very difficult personal crisis when I happened upon this video. I had a question that had no answer, and it was emotionally crippling. The music you played in that short performance answered that question for me. Thank you.

  • Thanks, I hope everythings fine for you now ;-)

    Regards

    Val

  • there is some work originally for the lute???

  • Not this one (for Cello, transcribed for lute) but some works are intended for lute : BWV 995 to 1000

    V.

  • Sounds great!

  • Thank you ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Lovely as ever, Valéry! I am studying this entire suite myself on guitar, but it sounds superb on lute.

    Erik

  • Hello Erik, thanks for coming here ;-) hope you're doing fine.

baroque lute sounds nice but hard to play... I let it sleep a little bit now, playing theorbo...

    All the best !

    Val

  • c'est formidable! Bravo!!

    I love lute's beautiful tone!!!

  • Merci beaucoup !

    Val

  • Very beautifully played. You are a source of insperation to me. Thank you

  • Thanks for listening ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Danke sehr ;-)

    V.

  • Gorgeous instrument.

We just finished discussing the Baroque period in my Music Study class.

    5 stars. :)

  • Thank you very much !

    Val

  • Really beautiful.

  • Thank you !

    Val

  • What's your background? The Lute is my musical alphabet letter "L" for my general music class.

  • I was a classical guitarist (start at 11) then swich to the lute in 1980... (Early music dpt of Toulouse Conservatoire)

    Thanks

    V.

  • brilliant. must feel good to be moving towards the dream. thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you very much.

    Best regards,

    Valéry

  • Oh I do not record all my vids on first take (I would like to) but often take many ones... Was lucky here ;-)

    Thanks

    Val

  • this is brilliant! fantastic! bravo! great job! full power!

  • Thank you,

    Best wishes

    Val

  • Beatiful Bach cello sonata interpretation in the lute. Now the dream is reality.Congratulations.More Bach please!! Thank you

  • Thanks !

More Bach, I've done some, and will do more later ;-) (I'll try on the theorbo too)

    Val

  • This is pretty amazing! The music of the Thomas cantor is the most beautiful ever. This rendition of the Allamande is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    best regards,

    Val

  • I know what you mean about doing more and more takes, it just adds too much pressure. I often find the best thing to do is forget about it for a while!

  • Yes that's true, when I can't record, I'm going for a walk with my dog, and back home, often it is better and right in the box ;-)

    V.

  • That must be an absolute bitch to tune!

  • Not at all with an electronic tuner ;-)

    Val

    Amicalement

    valéry

  • This is really great, such a lovely instrument...ahh i wish i had one..... :)

  • Thanks,

I whish you'll got one one day ;-)

    Val

  • Are you using A440 tuning or Baroque tuning?

  • This lute is tuned at A=415. (but baroque tuning could be from 392 to 460, more or less... 415 is a common convention, but not absolute baroque truth ! lol)

    ;-)

    V.

  • Oh waow this is amazing,

  • Thanks a lot

    Val ;-)

  • i love this instrument.

  • Thanks ;-) (me too)

    Val

  • Hey Val I dont suppose you know if there are any bach transcriptions or lute pieces in d minor?I only have the Prelude in d Bvw 999 is lovely am learning it now thanks beautiful music!!!!

  • I know the keys of the original lute suites are often "unplayable" on the baroque lute (wrote probably for keyboard), so I don't know about transcriptions. (Even some lute players as O'Dette or Smith are using other keys than originals when playing Bach lute music...)

    Val

  • your very good.

I try learning Bach's lute suites on the classical guitar and find it difficult, it must be even more harder on the lute.

    Your brilliant!

  • Thanks ;-)

Lute is perhaps harder because of the number of strings, the basses and the longer string length, but the tuning is more adapted to this music, so ?

    Regards

    Val

  • Whoa, tuning and restringing must be a bitch?

  • @Kyroshi1 lol i bet

  • You are awesome, my very honest congratulations. This is so inspiring

  • Thank you very much ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Does this dude rock or what?

  • Answer yourself your own questions ! lol...

    Regards

    Val

  • I think you already had... ;-)

    V.

  • 5 stars, just beautiful, thanks for sharing this music, on such a wonderful instrument...

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • What a spectacular performance! Thank you for contributing to the collective revival of interest in this spectacular instrument and its sublime repertoire!

Of what sort is your lute and from where did you acquire it, if I may ask?

  • Thanks for the comment ;-)

About the lute, I'm using here a 13 courses baroque lute, made by Didier Jarny (see my page for a link...) I'm also playing renaissance lute and historical guitars.

    Best regards,

    Valéry

  • This is wonderful, sir. Thank you so much for sharing your gift and for playing a part in keeping such classics alive and in the hearts of so many.

  • Thanks for the kind words. My pleasure to share this music ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • How the hell can I get that in my suitcase?

  • buy a huge one, or play ukulele... ;-)

    V.

  • where can you get a lute

  • try googling "lute society" and look for link to makers...

Also on the net there are some "industrial" EMS lutes of lesser quality but also less expensive...

    ;-)

    Val

  • Hi Val. First of all: you're great! You play so beautifully!

I really love ancient music. For this reason I've decided to start learning the renaissance lute.

Do you think it's possible starting with a very cheap instrument, without a teacher? Is it really necessary to have a very solid guitar background?

    Thank you!

  • Thanks a lot (answers in PM)

    Best regards

    Val

  • beautiful :)

  • Yes Bach music is beautiful !

    Val ;-)

  • how many courses does this lute have?

  • This is a german baroque lute, with 13 courses.

    Best regards

    Valéry ;-)

  • have you consider making another album? I would defenitly buy it.

    thanks :-)

  • I'm not sure I'll do another one... (the first I made by my own, and did not recover the charges... alas)

    V. :-(

  • Hi, my name is Adrian. I'm a college student, and I have a extra time in my schedule. If you own the required equipment for capturing your performances with high-fidelity, and decide you'd like to record again, I would gladly mix them as a favor, and only ask to be credited for the mixing. I mix in digital format, but, aided by industry standard software, I'm able to achieve pleasing resolution. Hope to hear from you! Adrian

  • That's kind of you, but the only equipment I have is a zoom H2 for the sound. (and even with a good mixing, produce a CD is expensive, and as I said the first one was not sold enough to cover charges... so...

Thanks anyway for the offer ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Beautiful cabinets.

  • isn't it ?

    V.

  • That is simply beautiful val, great playing! Sounds of grace coming from an instrument perfected in its day.

    take it easy.

    ~Kev

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Best regards

    val

  • Very Nice, Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

  • Thanks,

best whishes to you too ;-)

    Val

  • you play this so peacefully - my favorite

  • Thank you ;-)

    Val

  • dam i wich i could own and play a lute but there's no lute in my country and buying one include the shipping fees is not affordable for me. the only way out is to build one by getting the plans and guide from my local instrument maker.

  • Hello,

You can find plans on the net (guilde of American luthiers) for example...

    Good luck

    Val ;-)

  • Simply put, this is amazing.

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • dude u rape on the lute

i want to learn to play the lute, sitar and bagpipes on day

right now i can play the violin, guitar and bass

  • Well you're getting 5 stars, simply because you performed it near perfect and that lute looks so hard to play.

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Magnifique! vous entendre jouer est un délice pour les oreilles.

  • Merci de l'appréciation ;-)

    Cordialement,

    Valéry

  • Excellent. Merci beaucoup!

  • Merci à vous ;-)

    Cordialement

    Valéry

  • I love it! that lute sure looks a pain in the rear to tune tho. Beautiful, still.

  • Not easy to tune nor to play, but when it works, great pleasure...

    V.

  • only one word

    congratulations

  • Thanks ;-)

    V.

  • Dear Valeri,

Let all your dreams come true and we'll be happy to listen to all wonderful things of Bach!

  • Thanks for the whishes. I hope so too...

    V.

  • Merci beaucoup.C'est magnifique!

    Aisha

  • Bravo! Your choice of transcription, or the manner of playing it, is easier for me to enjoy than Walter Gerwig's which was monotonous, though beautiful also. On YouTube, yours is the only performance for Lute, so far.

  • Thanks,

There are other "Bach on the lute" videos on YT (Eduardo Eguez, Hoppy Smith, Louis Pernot...) but with this transcription perhaps I'm the first to try... I'm now loading the Courante...

    Best regards,

    Valéry

  • so beautiful!! =)

  • Thanks ;-)

  • great as always Val

  • Thanks for listening !

    Regards,

    Val

  • Oh man, that was beautiful. The perfect music of Bach played well. What a treat!

  • Thanks a lot Tim ;-)

    V.

  • Luthval this music was wonderful. thx for upload

  • Oh, thank you so much for the comment. Hope you're doing well and your music too ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Hi Val,

Very nice! As always, I always enjoy your playing. Look forward to hearing more!

    Robin

  • Thanks Robin, nice to read your comment !

    Best regards

    Val

  • Val, a baroque lute and Bach. Doesn't get much better than this. Thanks for continuing to post such wonderful music.

    Regards,

    Tim

  • Thanks Tim, I will continue (with Bach and others)

    Val ;-)

  • J'adore la music de Bach. This is a very interesting piece, so tender and you should be proud, you did a great job!!! Bravo!

  • Thanks for the kind words ;-)

    Val

  • Great video, as usual!

As a cello student and lover I'm very proud that you have choosen this great piece to play some Bach music on your wonderful instrument! ;)

  • Those Cello suites are so beautiful (I place it above all musics, with the Organ Passacaille by Bach and the Requiem by Mozart) My plan is to record the all suite Bwv 1007, but I do have a lot of work to achieve this... Thanks,

    Val ;-)

  • WOW! Dear Val!! I am so happy to see and hear this!! Just WOW! I love Bach (as you know) and this is just beautiful!! You have my respect and 5 stars!

    Merci mon ami!

    Per-Olov

  • Hello Per-Olov, thanks a lot for your comment. Means a lot for me, you know ;-)

    Some more to come soon...

    Amitiés,

    Valéry

  • nice performance. This suite is quite "lutable"like some other two of Bachs cello suites. This is a nice transcription too

  • Hello,

I've heard some other transcriptions, for theorbo by Pascal Montheillet, and another one for baroque lute by Nigel North, and listen to some cellist, and I think Gusta's transcription is very faithfull to the original... and yes playable too.

    Thanks for the comment

    Regards

    Val

  • Very nice Val. I've tried some Bach pieces on my BL and as you say it's very difficult. I thought since there were more courses that the counterpoint would be easier on BL then CG but not so (for me anyway). Did this transcription use scordatura?

  • Hello ;-)

no scordaturra, normal tuning (5 in B)

But as said somewhere, those transcriptions of cello by Gusta Goldschmidt are easyer than the "lute suites"...

    REgards

    Val

  • You play this with very fine expression and tone. It is a delight to hear it. I am very impressed with the range of pieces on your YouTube channel and have subscribed to it.

I find Bach's Cello Suites are a rich source of music to play on my mandolins

  • I love seeing and hearing from folk who either vocalize or demonstrate their passionate explanation of the music God has given us. Thank you.

  • Thanks for listening ;-)

    V.

  • Thank you. That was very, very well done.

  • Thanks, I try my best, even if I know it is not perfect...

    Regards

    Val

  • Hi Val, it sounds very nice with a convincing

sound. I knew Gusta Goldschmidt personally. A wonderful old lady who always was very positiv, helpfulwith a great knowledge! She knew many lutestudents all over the world. I will always remember her in my heart.

    All the best Tommy

  • I met Gusta Goldschmidt once in '85, Very respectable lady.

Thanks for your comment and for witness her memory.

    V.

  • Great playing! Congratulations!

The music is simply beautiful. One of Bach's work I like the most played on a lute (I tried my fingers on it years ago and you tempt me to try it again :-))

    All the best

    Thomas

  • Hello Thomas,

    Thanks.

Yes Bach's music is above all (even if Weiss is really nice on the lute too !) I enjoy very much playing it.

    All the best,

    Valéry

  • Hi Luthval !

I remain a faithful listener. I find your interpretation really convincing and more than that, the sound you produce is magic. give us more to dream of !

    bye, cuhas.

  • Thanks a lot. To give something to dream of, nice idea ;-) It is my pleasure to share music I love with people. (the goal of a musician, no ?)

    Amitiés

    Valéry

  • Val, why is it more difficult to play the Baroque lute? Bach, OK. Guitarists adore his cello suites too.

  • Why ? number of strings, doubles, string length. Just a few points but as any instrument, with a lot of work... (it is all the secret)

    Regards

    Val

  • OK, gotcha. BTW you mentioned elsewhere that Bach was not a lutenist. As I recall, though, his household inventory when he died included two lutes. Wonder who played them?

  • I think (and I'm not alone...) Bach wrote the lute suites on the Lautenwerk (a gut strunged harpsichord) But it is known some of his students does play the lute, and Sylvius Leopold Weiss was a great friend of him. So...

    V.
