its amazing the way you play, have you thought although to share the scores??? I mean, I would really like to play that beautiful song and I think im not the only one...I've already looked for the score but it isnt for lute,,,,you could share or sell youre Lute song´s scores...specially Bach song's, they're all gorgeous...greetings maestro.
What key is this suite in??and also how many basses to you need to retune??!!yes the standard tuning is DM but what i find is a pain with the baroque lute is retuning to play in another key why i am learning them on guitar..not as nice but less hastle!!
Here the suite is transposed in C Major (so only the bass 5 (12th course) to retune.
There is a nice book of 80 easy pieces for baroque lute, edition of the French Lute Society (vol. 34), with at the end the different tuning of basses according to the different keys, very useful !
Very nice, Luthval. I like this transctption a lot! Btw, how about the lute works of Bach? In fact, almost all of what Bach wrote is quite beautiful....
We don't know if lute works are really for lute (or for lute harpsichord) and in fact they are really difficult to play on the instrument (at least for me... some do...)
I played the sarabande ob BWV 995...and will play some other but not all...
Don't worry about playing how well you play Bach, because I can't play dowland that well. You've done yourself a fine job at playing Bach's works on this instrument.
Sounds really good! Thoose deep basses adds something a guitar can never get. Emotional I think you pretty much nailed it as well. Best Regards /Kristian

Je suis désolé si je n'ai pas raison, mais à cause de votre nomme j'ai supposé que vous êtiez français... Alors, vraiment magnifique, et un instrument très beau aussi! Je joue ce pièce sur la guitarre et je l'aime aussi.
This lute is tuned at A=415. (but baroque tuning could be from 392 to 460, more or less... 415 is a common convention, but not absolute baroque truth ! lol)
Hey Val I dont suppose you know if there are any bach transcriptions or lute pieces in d minor?I only have the Prelude in d Bvw 999 is lovely am learning it now thanks beautiful music!!!!
I know the keys of the original lute suites are often "unplayable" on the baroque lute (wrote probably for keyboard), so I don't know about transcriptions. (Even some lute players as O'Dette or Smith are using other keys than originals when playing Bach lute music...)
What a spectacular performance! Thank you for contributing to the collective revival of interest in this spectacular instrument and its sublime repertoire!

About the lute, I'm using here a 13 courses baroque lute, made by Didier Jarny (see my page for a link...) I'm also playing renaissance lute and historical guitars.

The music is simply beautiful. One of Bach's work I like the most played on a lute (I tried my fingers on it years ago and you tempt me to try it again :-))
I remain a faithful listener. I find your interpretation really convincing and more than that, the sound you produce is magic. give us more to dream of !
OK, gotcha. BTW you mentioned elsewhere that Bach was not a lutenist. As I recall, though, his household inventory when he died included two lutes. Wonder who played them?
I think (and I'm not alone...) Bach wrote the lute suites on the Lautenwerk (a gut strunged harpsichord) But it is known some of his students does play the lute, and Sylvius Leopold Weiss was a great friend of him. So...

Great playing! Congratulations!
The music is simply beautiful. One of Bach's work I like the most played on a lute (I tried my fingers on it years ago and you tempt me to try it again :-))
All the best

Hello Thomas,
Thanks.
Yes Bach's music is above all (even if Weiss is really nice on the lute too !) I enjoy very much playing it.
All the best,
Valéry

Thanks a lot. To give something to dream of, nice idea ;-) It is my pleasure to share music I love with people. (the goal of a musician, no ?)

Val, why is it more difficult to play the Baroque lute? Bach, OK. Guitarists adore his cello suites too.

Why ? number of strings, doubles, string length. Just a few points but as any instrument, with a lot of work... (it is all the secret)

So...
