No, he wasn't. He left on his own accord...he got sick of rigorous touring and decided to settle with his girlfriend in LA for some time. It was completely his decision...right now, he's working with a buddying Brooklyn band called Bishop Allen.

But he wasn't "kicked out" by any means.

he left because he got settled in LA and didn't want to leave and do the whole touring thing again so soon, i read in an interview that it wasn't anything about "he didn't leave because of any creative differences but about a lifestyle choice"
