If you want 0.2 micron filtration that you don't have to do all this...then buy a $240 Katadyn ceramic filter...hump the extra 3-lbs for the pack, and never run out of water again! Great unit, just add horsepower. Wait...you just ran out of civilization and Amazon quit working...what do you do now, biowerks? I didn't see you make a video on the subject of reverse osmotic membrane filtration!!! He is right...just needs boiling after particle filtration!!! give it a rest.
Slightly cumbersome to pack, but if you are hunting or hiking anywhere that is extremely remote and where becoming lost or separated is hazardous I carry the: FM 21-76 US ARMY SURVIVAL MANUAL. If you know how to read, think and don't panic this Manual WILL save your life!
Also, it gives you something to read while awaiting assistance for a few very LONG days...
Look, you can pick apart any survival video. At least he is taking the time to provide some skills to lay people, that could benefit them in an emercgency. We can't all know everything. Chill out on this guy.
It surely is a good idea, but with a water purifier, you don´t need to keep the fire.
Since fire boils at least one liter of water in less than 3 minutes or so, you could say you only need one decent fire to have a good water supply for the day. But what about if you can´t make fire anymore, for instance, a strong rain falls and everything turns wet?
Anything has it´s use, including a water purifier.
You spoke incorrectly. You mean POINT 4. Also, charcoal can remove smaller protazoa, as it kills giarda and cryptosporidia. Not to mention who cares, it can save your life can't it? Great tip.
charcoal in a filter acts as a chemical neutralizer...it works to add carbon in ionic transactions, so that it chemically neutralizes bad things. Charcoal does NOT act as a filter in itself...it kills no single cell animals directly, though by chemically changing their environment, may make it no longer healthy for them to be there. The purpose of this filter is just that, large-particle filtration. 2nd stage purification requires boiling...10-mins, or MORE! Afterward.
@mountaindweller44 Wrong. It does NOT take 10 minutes boiling. Bring water to 180 F and all bacteria and virus are destroyed. At 160 F protiens break down and so nada all critters die.
you can still start fire in rain, you just have to have practice..... not like this guy who read all of his shit in a book and found a plastic water bottle in the woods.
he didnt find a water battle in the woods, he had it with him. if you are going into the wilderness without any supplies you probably have special needs.
What if there was an old mine near by that was leaking heavy metals or toxic chemicas in the water will you still be safe using this and then boiling?
what if birds had machine guns? ... go look if there is a mine. If there isnt then you can drink it... and in survival situation it wont matter anyway. two days without water youll drink out of a puddle in the middle of downtown Brooklyn... I can guarantee it.
haven't you heard of the steripen journey?

By the way, at 0.2 microns, you also filter 99.99% of all viruses from water, as well...and is accepted as 'drinking pure' by most UN Aid groups...

Water purification is becoming such an important topic! I am doing a series on water that really adds to what you are saying. Surf on over!

this is actually how they purify tap water, just on larger scale and in a more complicated way

if you're building a fire anyway, why not just boil the water?

Charcoal does not take out parasites or bacteria.
biowerks 2 years ago
yeah it does, it doenst filter out viruses which are smaller then 4 microns... 4 microns is the smallest size particle that charcoal filters.

Depends on your altitude but if it's high enough I wouldn't bother with purifying the water, I would drink it straight off the brook.
