  • the u.s. abandoned thousands of pow/mias after ever war, especially the vietnam war! shame on america a cowardly nation!!

  • Mr. Herzog has actually apologized about his film's portrayal of Mr. DeBruin, and said that he would have changed the script, had he known all the facts about that person. However, Rescue dawn is a beautiful movie, and, if you ask me, all the characters in that film are portrayed as sympathetically and as honestly as posable.

Need I remind you all, of the factual errors in films such as "Apollo 13" or many others?

  • @PowerOfMontage

still is sad, I only know about this because of special intrest. But I imagne alot of people, that just saw the movie thinks lesser of Mr. DeBruin.

I can't help think that Herzog didn't do all that he could to fix the story to how it should have been.

  • we love u sir. RIP. :'(

  • when people will understand that movies are movies, an art form seeking for beauty, not documentaries that try to find the truth.

  • "and that's what DID happen"

    lol FUCK!

  • Now that Ive done my research of the escape of these men, The movie is a lie, the maker is a horrid man to lie about this escape of men whos lives are in danger, to all POWs he should be shunned by his fellow producer, directors, he needs to learn that the truth was more powerful than his movie.........how does the man face not only dieter but all soldiers..........how does he sleep at night........

  • yes the movie was lame and of course the book is better .The beenthroughhell guy ranting on this page needs to relax

  • so dieter didn"t make the key, they already had it?

  • What a remarkable man. His story is a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit.

  • The movie breeds ignorance, stupidity, and homosexual superiority.

  • a brave man who fight for the usa.

he has german blood and the germans were the best soldiers and the best musicans and lyricans of ever,

a pope is german and a freedom nobel price was german.(willy brandt)

my father was a german .

my father was in the 2. world war,i mgrown up with willy brandt.

my son should be a soldier for freedom

  • Bravo Dieter

  • yea, yea, yea...Dieter over here, poor downed pilot over there...movies about "brave" grunts trapped in the jungle fighting off "charlie" and bringing 58.173 of their comrades in body bags...alright ! you want me to drop a tear? BOOO fuckin' HOO ! but don't you forget the two million dead viets (mostly civilians) ....nobody obviously gives a rat's @§§ about'em !

  • Correct, no one does. Dieter certainly had a hard time of it though.

  • -lol fuck you. thats not what he would have wanted. drop a tear. listen man im no american im canadian but i know for a fact that before america went to war with vietnam they auditioned a peaceful solution to the problem. the problem was that vietnam was a communist country and had they have been left to build a steady economy, government, and military which they nearly did communism could have spread 2 other countries. about the civilians. not all viet cong soldiers wore uniforms and allot

  • @hophoopine

the problem is that the staters think they can do whatever the fuck they want, anywhere the fuck they want and even if like most of the time it's too late or just plain stupidity (like in Vietnam for example)

  • looked like civilians. not to say that america weren't a little bit barbaric from time to time but so were the vietcong and so are allot of soldiers is any military force. im not in the army so if u are by any chance or were than there are probably some aspects of real time action/torture that i wont ever understand fully but even still bottom line is that america and several other countries were in agreement that vietnam had to happen. and like life, shit happens, and sometimes its really bad

  • ..Canadian..lol..No wonder why you lick yankee's ass big time...!

  • loooooool

  • yeah i find that funny too as canada and US have one of the biggest rivalries at heart than any other two countries

  • @hophoopine

again stupid motherfucker who thinks the world evolve around them : just for your information, what you call a rivalry is England Vs France or Palestine Vs Occupied Territory or Chinese Vs Japan ....

your little thing has never been a rivalry but just a economical plan to make dumb cunt like you spend your cash on flag and hat

  • @troir england and france aren't at war and haven't been for what a hundred years? same can be said about canada and USA and if u didnt know...yes we were at war with eachother it was around the time england and france had their last battle. so for you to say france and england is different from canada and the USA is a little bit of a stretch.

  • @ beenshit War is hell. You need a reality check.

  • @steveh1010 well you need a rectum check you dumb cunt !!!

  • Comment removed

  • @beenthroughell who the fuck are you and why did you start so much shit all your doing is voicing an opinion that nobody cares about and in the process pissing everyone off. Go smoke a joint and chill the fuck out

  • @hophoopine that's exactly my point smart @ss ! nobody cares about the dead viets..! this guy is a soldier..he is paid to take shit..and to give a whole lot of it !! ..and what he's been through is three times NOTHING besides what he most certainly did...so, bottom line, if my opinion pisses off everyone, well ...SCREW EVERYONE !!

  • @beenthroughell go smoke a joint, i stand corrected

  • i think 'rescue dawn' is a very good movie and i like herzog's other movies.

but on the other hand its a shame that eugene got defamed that way, if he was that good guy...i saw the other witness and he said eugene was one of the finest man he ever met.

  • read the Dengler bio. on the site about him, and how he survived. He didn't break both his arms and legs....and there are STILL men in Vietnam that were never released. Horrible.

  • I just watched a little bit of this movie and it is already very inaccurate. The real Dengler broke both of his arms and legs in the crash. He was treated for his injuries by the north vietnam because they found out that Dengler's dad was a top admiral.

  • I was stationed at NAS Miramar learning to fly the F 8 Crusader in VF 124 during 1968. I met Deiter in then when he briefed the squadran about his captivity, treatment, escape and survival ordeal. If his was badly injured, he didn't mention it. He was shot down over Laos and was never handed over to the North Vietnamese. I expect the movie "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" is about as close to the truth as will ever get. You can rent the film from NetFlix.

  • was Eugene deBruin realy that crazy

  • no he was not

  • ''brohamj' is a disgrace to thailand, how dare he/she calls the royal family's relative a Garbage Man

  • u r right slednecks ....ofcourse it was a joint effort but without america the allies would have lost the war ! ps; I am not an american!

  • What are you talking about, America and their allies DID lose the war! Did the world become a dictatorship, NO! You are totally IGNORANT!

  • spartan is right : Without america the whole world might have ended in a big dictatorship...imagine what would have happened if the nazis , the brutal japanese and stalin would have taken over!

  • Yes.. Just america alone stopped it right? Not the british or the canadians and the rest of the allies?

  • WAIT THAT LAST COMMENT WAS WRONG!!!

  • So the rest of them died, Gene included?????

  • I think we're guessing the rest of them died. Because everyone expect Gene were never found.

We know for a fact that Gene was killed

Gene And Dieter sneak into a village to get food.

    Gene got killed by them.

I'm not sure if they got the food.

  • it was Duane Martin that snuck into the village and was killed right?

  • nono Dieter and Pisidhi Indradat survived.

  • I have great respect for Herzog, and love his films - well most of them anyway.

However I think that if you are making a film about real people and real events you have a duty to get as close to the actual truth as you possibly can. Poetic license is aonly acceptable if it gets to a deeper truth.

Rescue Dawn is a great film, but it strikes me as another film about Werner Herzog.

  • The film "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" is Hezog's documentary about Dieter' life. I expect it is very accurate.

  • It's not. But it's a well crafted story much like all of Herzogs films.

  • It moves me that someone like Dieter can move to America and lay his life on the line for our country, even after watching the Americans bomb hi home in Germany as a boy. God Bless America, and the opportunities she offers.

  • bless you man, u said it just right.

  • That says more about Dieter than it does about America.

  • Exactly.

  • i also have a question...wat happened to the other escapees that seperated? wat happened to the other 4?

  • Almost nothing is know about the other 4. I've done significant research to try and find out, but apparently there's no record of the 4 of them escaping or getting caught again. It's a pity, but most likely they probably got caught, died of starvation/malnutrition, or disease.

  • Lol the hell dude chill out. Go take some chill pills man.

  • Machinima69 what the hell bro?

I dont know what you think you know about America or why your so angry but America is like ANY OTHER country in the world. Some of us are are douchebags and some of us will give you the shirts off our backs. So be nice when talking about America. This government has done more for the world than you know.

  • Rich, you're making a massive sweeping asumption there. Get a clue before making such an ill-educated comment.

  • I find it really funny when people especially Europeans make comments on my country(USA) with little to zero real world information. they seem to think because they watch American TV. and movies they know about the people of my country and are feelings. That would be as naive of me watching British TV.. and professing this is representative of the British people. , Well here is some news for you .There is an awful lot of country between N.Y. and California

  • The thing about Herzog is that he will always tell stories his own way, no matter how much they deviate from the truth. He does this because he is a storyteller, and damn good one at that. Even the documentary Little Dieter needs to fly has scenes and interviews in it that are all of Herzog's own imagination.

  • Gene was the finest man i've ever heard of.

  • R.I.P Dieter. Your native country will never forget you.

  • Heil.

  • You are the poster child for "BAH, HUMBUG!" Scrooge, where have you been?

  • watch "little dieter needs to fly" shithead... you might learn something. American Propaganda my ass, guys like you pisses me off. Don't talk about stuff you don't know shit about. Fucking moron... you ruined my day... fuck!!!

  • ur one dumb mofo

  • Mmmm, interesting theory. Are you retarded?

  • A few years after the documentary was filmed he died of ALS. I can't get over how terrible of a life he was dealt but what a man he was....an inspiration to me and I'll think about him and his life before I feel sorry for myself in the future.

  • Herzog knew Dieter Dangler quite well. See 'Little Dieter Needs to Fly", a documentary filmed way before Rescue Dawn.

It's clear that Gene and Dieter had some issues. I am a huge fan of Herzog, but he did make a big mistake on Rescue Dawn. His portrayal of Gene DeBruin is for Hollywood purposes only - somehow having someone "strange" and unstable like the character of DeBrun spices up the whole thing. Unfortunately, the approach has little to do with the truth. It is a shame.

  • God bless you Dieter and all the POWS and MIAS in the world today!

  • What an incredible story!! It does make me cry....GOD BLESS YOU, DIETER....

  • How long he's been in Germany? He still got a lil accent!

  • i think till his late teens.

  • His life story is an inspiration and not only to soldiers who faced similar situations but to all of us. It is epitomy of the human will to live and survive, much like the Holocaust survivors.

  • just read the truth behind rescue dawn and the film is not the truth, good film but as its surpossed to be a ture story a shame on the film makers RIP DIETER DENGLER and only i think that EUGENE DEBRUIN was not the man the film makers made him to look like he also was a HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • are there still veitnam pows today .and are some still alive . why are usa not doing any think are thay still pows in camps.them vc are fuckers .

  • How do you know that?

  • @KNOFRT you know nothing about vietcong so shut up. and btw, he escaped from Laos

  • when people get back from war they get pushed to the side like fucking dogs fuck war let the goverment bare arms thm self

  • Best movie Ive ever seen. We thank you Werner and Dieter!!!

  • same here... escape from laos--dieter's autobiography...best book ive ever read

  • i am inspired by his escape...

    so....brave...

    go dieter dengler!!!

    but his poor friend died..

  • DUAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE!!!!!!!!!

  • The movie was a lie

  • Great Film...broke my heart. Not one of us can make a claim to know what goes on in the hearts of men who are subjected to the inhumanity and cruelty that these and other POW's were subjected to...The Gene portrayal was as accurate as history would allow...we can't second guess what anyone would do...or portray.

  • While we cannot know nor judge the hearts of men subjected to such inhumanity, that has nothing to do with the issue here. The Gene portrayal clearly was not accurate according to Dieter himself who would have known better than anyone else. So yes we can second guess what was portrayed. They should have portrayed Gene as the loyal friend that he clearly was.

  • yes i was very confused since rescue dawn porttrayed gene as a bad guy..when i read escape from laos, dieter said tht he was nice...confusing

  • Why did they portray Eugene as a coward nutcase in the movie? It seemed like he was a strong and loyal friend to the end.

  • Why did they portray Gene as a coward nutcase in the movie? It seems like he was a strong and loyal friend to the end.

  • Well...Hmmm...Yes...well personally I hope I never personally bump into Lenny Henry on a dark Saturday night ever ever...the swine...I will never ever ever watch his comedy shows ever ever again....pump. I hope Dawn is awarded another silver7 for her bravery....looking forward to seeing the film....

  • this movie is so sad

  • Dieter Dengler immigrated to the US from Germany at age 18.

He spent several years in the army before getting a chance to fly. After his plane crash he is held prisoner by the Pathet Lao before being transfered to the Vietcong.

  • What's the deal with his accent? Was he a recent immigrant, before the war?

  • My inderstanding is that he lived in Germany until the age of 18.

  • My brother and I immigrated from Germany in '55...he was 17...and still has an accent like he just got off the boat... His was German as a first language...I was a 3 year old...fluent in German...well, as fluent as a 3 year old can be, ...but I learned English, and have no accent whatsoever...I can however do a pretty believable "Kraut" accent...

  • Heh thats my uncle im related although i never knew i him he died when i was six meh name is erik dengler

  • That question is for you.

  • i think... i never knew when they immigrated. we immigrated in canada and the u.s but dieter and me are realted to the singer of interpool. Carlos dengler
