It's the 999 call operators who are the front line heroes, they're the very first people at an emergency, and the advice they give can make the difference between live and death long before any emergency services get there. They do NOT deserve shit like this, the woman calling them about a pigeon should be ashamed of herself. Perhaps it's time to put a leaflet through every door in the country, to remind people what 999 is for.....

You can tell the girl isn't TOTALLY stupid, though. She explained herself and why she called (no money!) so in comparison to the other ridiculous calls... not so bad!

No it isn't! Somebody could have been trying to call 999 with a real emergency and not got through- this could have cost someone their life!

Two of the most ridiculous reasons for calling 999 I have ever heard;
1. A woman called 999 because her husband wouldn't let her watch Eastenders.
2. Someone called 999 for instructions on how to cook a leg of lamb.
I read those in a magazine article.

I'm amazed that the operator was able to answer that in a way that could be deemed professional. She handled that wonderfully.
