i was at this show at time we thought she sucked big time and couldn't sing but she gave it 120 % which what Howie's show were all about.. she was all ways rude and smelled like she need a bath
WOW, very cool, great stage presence even in the beginning. Backup dancers though...jajajjjajajajjaja! Ok, ok... maybe they were spastic on purpose, to match the geeky clothes???
@GoriddleGorilla : Yes, at the time punk rock was ending, the English new wave sound had started. Synthesizers were being used in every genre of music and as usual pop music is and will always be a generic reflection of the times it is emulating. Pop art.
of course it does, its madonna in 1982. at the time she was really into freestyle, a year before blondie had released rapture. to me there's no NYC new wave without hiphop
The comments are funny. Like people really miss this. But I'm SO SORRY I was exposed to this crap when I was a kid, lol. What drivel. Those droning Manhattan nights.
@KiittyCupcake "never had talent" my ass. You don't stay on top of an industry that changes this much without talent. She is a creative visionary with an actual message in most of her music. More female artists today site her as an inspiration to get into the music business than any other artist period. You don't stay influential for this long for simply being controversial.
I had a connection to Nile Rodgers through family at the time and he was producing "Like A Virgin". Said she was an awful singer... She was one of the earliest users of the machine that adjusts the octave of your voice so they can fix your off key notes. She did however have her fingers on the pulse of what was hot and could assimilate what everyone was inventing around her into her act. What her real talent was ,was seeing trends as they were being born and exporting them.
Amazing !! Tamryn, how did u get your hands on this ? This is a rare jem. Madonna sounds great. Danceteria seemed to be the place to be in the '80's ;)
Loved the place! Saw Snakefinger, Flipper, Indoor Life and so many others there! That cryptic freight elevator, dark stairs, Afrika Bam's kid spinning on the astro turf roof, the Beastie Boys or Joey Ramone hanging, wild style film premiere, the tv/video lounge....those were the DAZE. Jeez, I still have some flyers!
sory but this just freaks me out! dnt read this(cuz it really wrks). u will gt kissd on the nearest frieday by the love of ur life. 2mara wll b the bst day of ur life however if you dnt post ths comment 2 at least 3 vids u will die withn 2 days nw uv startd readn this dnt stp this is so scary snd ths ovr 2 5 vids in 143 mins
Oh that 80s vibe madonna was great dancer but wasnt the best singer and couldve been passed over by many other talents out there but had an energy about her that was confident and hypnotic some peopel just have it and she did i feel inlove with her in the eighties .
what a great talent....not. As Howie says... "mediocre...not exactly James Brown...." Madonna's one talent was believing in herself in spite of any reason to.
A true testament that no matter where u come from, or who u r, as long as u love yourself, believe in yourself, stay determined, live your life to the fullest & happiest, stay away from drugs & hazardous people, keeping the right people in your corner, looking good, eating right & selling every drop of sensuous sexuality u have to the camera & your audience that all that are the ingredients that will catapult u to ultimate fame, happiness, love & continued success, gotta LOVE Madonna L. Ciccone.
The Dancetaeria really was the greatest of the clubs back then. And there was some real competition: Mudd Club, Area, Garage, The World. I hung out there nealry every night between 1983 & 86 when it closed. The real estate boom put an end to it ( and many other big dance venues). What memories.
That guy in the beginning is Howie Montague. I know him fairly well. He claimed he discovered Madonna. I used to work at the Palladium in 1985 and a friend worked at Danceteria who used to let me in free. Danceteria was the greatest club in the early to mid 1980's.
if you know howie you would know that he passed away a looong time away and he might well have helped her on to her career. but she was always her own man and mark kamins and jelly bean benitez are probably more responsible for putting her out there.
When I was in Highschool I think the tunnel peaked, I never made it there. then when I graduated I swung by there and seemed wack as hell! So we started to go to the SFactory, that place was on fire! But fizzled out like 2000 if I recall. Heard carbon also was good when I was in HighSchool.
@nateboytwo oh please, its so funny how shes considered a genius just for soing wat drag queens been doing for centurys. when drag queens do it prejudice people hate on it. wen madonna steals there ideas shes considered a genius. fuckin ridiculos double standard, this world is so hypocritical. the gay community created madonna and gave her all her ideas dum dum, shes just a puppet. !!!
Who are all these critics? Just take the video for what it is. An awesome vintage piece of music history. I am not a fan of Madonna but if any of you can market yourselves and set trends (in this country) for almost 3 decades the way she has go ahead and prove it to me.... Jack asses!

Did you notice how at the begining the crowed was "asleep", but by the end of the song Madonna had them wraped around her finger?
And all it took was a couple of chairs, a few hats, suits, bad lighting and Madonna's ear-candy voice of course...
