  • just try taking to a disney park they wont let you in!

  • How will it work for AKA ... (above knee amputees) seeing as how we are weightless in front without legs. Will this affect the stability of the gyro or not? I really want on of these!!!!

  • nice video i need some information to get this one

  • Don't wanna fall on one of these, might aswell lose the working parts of your body...

  • sux if u fall forward O.O

  • What about transferring to and from this wheel chair?

  • In 2020 we will see old people moving up mountains and the side of buildings on 2 wheels.

  • but in illegal in prob most places so useless.

  • People have to realise that this level of vehicle is not JUST for people with paraplegia and certainly isnt for people with quadraplegia but can be of great assistance for the many more people who currently suffer from reduced mobility.

I'm not sure of the gyroscopic technology for the elderly and people whose overall nervous system is suffering and so may be better to look at a steered product, like the ecoboomer, instead of this balanced product but I would like to try this product for sure.

  • this man is gorgeous

  • Nice, just hope it doesn't catch on for the walking people, I don't need traffic on the sidewalk :-)

  • pura mierda

  • so the people he cant walk because they dont have enough balance and these guys expect them to ride this thing? that recires alot of balance

  • where do i get one !!!!!!!!!! i'm disabled and most four wheeled scoots are too big but this seem to be as manuverable as on feet I'm game

  • this is perfect it makes disableed persons able to move with no effort at all.

  • this would be so cool for me,i have spinal stenosis,so reduced mobility. Way better than crutches.Imagine a tour of NZ,beach fishing with one of these,no longer stuck by the car

  • Is this Professor XaviER ?

  • As a wheelchair user i would not trust it. Wheelchairs tip over backwards when going over curbs, it's a good concept though!

  • and now let's wait what happens when the battery is empty

  • thats not a segway

  • great use of technology and inventions to serve the needy!

  • good to see technology helping people with limited mobility

  • good now no one has to push these vegetables around

  • @catniple With an attitude like that, I hope you end up confined to a wheelchair someday with no one to help you get around...idiot.

  • if i could load and unload this out of the car, i woulldn't need a w\c would i

  • Hey Everyone! Tired of Lifehacker's new layout?

  • wow

  • This just goes to show the ingenuity of mankind now-a days. For people who have been physically disabled, this can change lives. And who knows? Maybe within a matter of years, people could do anything on these machines, just think of the possibilities!

  • Unfortunately mostly fat lazy people will probably buy this.

  • If you want to improve the wheel chair, the obvious problem is that it CAN'T GO UP STAIRS. In that respect, this is still a fail.

  • @jordak

I am a disable person suffering from Muscular Dystrophy.

do you know about any electric wheelchair, which can climb stairs?

  • Comment removed

  • @kall40401

The ibot wheelchair climbs stairs, made by the people behind the Segway but no longer for sale

  • @seanmorris

what is the price of segway wheelchair?

  • Awesome. If I ever lost the use of my legs, I would definitely get one of these.

  • good!

  • these things are pretty nice lol.

  • this is a good and a bad thing good for all the people with leg problems bad for all the fat lazy people

  • @j25482 nice, comment on some more videos advertising jazzy wheelchairs..

  • @j25482 more like jizzy wheel chaires

  • Comment removed

  • charles xavier anyone?

  • if it falls over, they're fucked

  • Are these available for sale? The designer's website isn't very helpful.

  • The only problem is the design itself.

While it would alow somone to travel more freely, should they be disabled, its not as steady as an actualy wheelchair.

You're more likley to actually get hurt on something like that.

  • @coolforlife64 bollox, maybe you should read up more on segways, because stability is what they're all about

  • I would like this machine if it had a back for the person to lay on and an armrest or something. Other than that it's a nice design

  • segay?

  • I'd use one of these even though I am not disabled!

Segway is a great invention, but unfortunately the only flaw with them is our British Government who refuse to allow Segway use on any public roads or pavements.

They cannot see a way to extract TAX out of prospective Segway users, so they ban them instead until no doubt those in the Government decide to use them!

I wish this project success. I suppose there is a danger of the gyro's failing as they do on the bipedal models if 'forced'.

  • @boobookins ,i work iron work, and i still work out.. whats this, you break down and cry? you must be a pussy carpenter.

  • that's an amazing alteration could help tons of people, but cost would kill it

  • This thing is incredible, but I feel ungrateful saying I want one.

  • jkòk`+k

  • Was it me or were you overly offended when the bi-pedal guy removed the segway from the car then later moved to a wheelchair?

Did you notice the segway to chair move??? ALL LEG.

Shake hands with a handicapped person - they could break your fingers in one squeeze but they can't kick your ass - although someone should kick this guys ass! LITERALLY.

I'd like to see a real para take this through its paces during day everyday run

  • I'm glad some people see them for there real use, I hate those losers that go on a segway for the sheer sake of it.

  • @hglass500 Yeah people who do things just for fun are losers. What?

  • this is sooo what they were ment for :}

  • HURRR DURRR

  • you needed ramps to unload a fucking wheelchair..

  • @boomstickkid No kidding you need ramps to unload a fucking wheelchair. A person who needs this thing probably can't lift more than one of those ramps and may need help for that. That adapted segway probably weighs in at around 50 lbs or more and a person with a spinal injury usually can't lift more than 10 or 20 lbs without pain. BTW I'm healthy and work blue collar but my wife is not and is in a fucking wheelchair you tool shed.

  • @Liv2xplore

Not to be an ass, its sad how in an instant ones lives are changed permanently, least for another 10+ years before the researchers in that field get their thumbs out their asses and have proper funding. Anyhow what i was to say is you seem to forget that as long as the segway has power it dont need to be lifted anywhere, so you can just push the throttle forward and up the ramp it goes, it is even possible to have a program that makes it auto down and up a ramp,Same goes for ramp.

  • @dragonlie That would require some rewriting of the safety protocols that keeps it from moving when tilted to far, but it could be done. The ramp could easily be made automatic. The powered ramp would add about $2000 to the cost of the ramp. We have a power lift for our van and they generally go for minimum of $5000, not including installation. Being disabled is very expensive.

  • @Liv2xplore

exactly, well not exactly if she can use her arms with a cane/pointer to push the device.

for example till such as i mentioned are available, that can be of help, or control device for it on the chair.

Jeez, that's not cheap at all, but i bet you went handyman and saved you guys the installation fee if that was expensive much?

If this was were i lived the state welfare system would have done all this for you, specialized the house even. etc if you know electronics, go handyman :)

  • @dragonlie All total, there's over $15,000 in changes just to the van. When you cut away the floor and lower it 4 inches to provide room to pass through the door and room to sit in the van, you kind of need a professional. The state won't pay for it because public transportation has mostly wheelchair accessible buses and a ride access program (scheduling sucks). Fortunately, if you look, you can find used vans that have already had the changes made for under $15,000.

  • u needed ramps to unload a fucking wheel chair..

  • My dad suffers from parkinson's disease and can't walk. SOmething like this would help him get back on his feet and feel useful again.

When you can't walk, it not just about not walking. You start feeling useless and you get pushed aside even by people who love you. This thing would solve a few big problems for a person like my dad.

  • @saeidmomtahan Please send my love to your dad I hope he gets a Segway if you cant seem to get one you could try putting up charities in supermarkets or if your on FaceBook make a group and on another website you can put a donation area there and then with your FaceBook group attach the link to it and you'll have your own charity :¬)

  • they should mass produce these and mandate them instead of those damn rascals that take up the entire shopping lane

  • that's pretty cool, but how would someone who can't walk get it in and out of the vehicle themselves?

Also I've seen videos where people crash Segways by sudden quick movements. For someone like myself who has a spinal injury and very strong spasms could a spasm that was strong enough make you tip over?

  • What's your target market ? Your design lends towards those who may not be fully disabled ? No backrest, very high seating position. How is this any better than a regular electric wheelchair ?

  • what about people who dont have balance, they will fall easily

  • 'if' you fall you are completely fked

  • Salutes are an invalid boy of 44 years and seeing this video I wonder me as to make x have the correct contacts x to order.

I would be her thankful if it helps me to have the correct address email x to put me in contact with the builder.

    Thanks infinitely Giuliano

  • lol if that shit fails or batt or just a short cucuit and it falls with the 80 year old women, there goes the future of this design

  • would if the battery dies?

  • Hi,

    Your film really interested me.

I am a wheelchair user. I currently use an iBot (you probably know that it employs technology similar to a Segway - and it has been discontinued, with parts and support only available until the end of 2013!).

So, I'm investigating alternatives. I am seriously considering a wheelchair version of a Segway, and would love to know more about what you're doing.

    How can I contact you?

    Best wishes,

    Max

  • Check out the Levo C3 (google it)

  • All of you guys saying this is just for lazy people haven't gotten older with bad knees that allow you to stand on a segway but not walk miles. You have no idea how much freedom one of these things gives you.

  • I am disabled and have used a segway pt for four+ years now. I bought the $900.00 SegSeat, piece of crap fell apart Ina week. Nothing about the Seg is cheap. Batteries will run $1850.00 (no core x) and tires can only be gotten at a Seg dealer. Fun fun fun @12.5mph! Stick a handicap placard onit and part the people wave...

  • segway is for lazy people,,, imagine segway with the dumb chair -.-

  • I saw that in Barcelona today

  • Just search "segway crash" on youtube to see why this is a very bad idea..

  • uh the segway was just a byproduct of a wheelchair tha does the same thing but climbs stairs sorry to put a damper on your day

  • Congrats, you must be a fuckin scientist. The point of this was alternate transport for people with disabilities.

  • good thing..

  • Mate thats great to see could do alot of good with those ;)

  • if u fell forward that would hurt your ballonknot

  • i hope this will help people who cant walk by their own to move more free and do what they need or want to with less problems :)

  • no its very easy just take 2 minutes and there you go...

  • are segways hard to balance on?

  • No. The electronics do it for you.

  • no, its as easy as balancing on your feet.

  • ...what if you can't balance on your feet and are disabled? lol

This just seems like an idea for lazy people...

  • That looks nice. I wonder if you need a lot of strength to keep the balance.

  • I like the iBOT, however this Segway modification is much lighter and more easily portable.

In any event Dean Kamen rocks! His best invention is the FIRST Foundation. Check out their channel. My favorite is the FIRST LEGO League.

  • whats wrong with a normal wheelchair? :S

  • For those take forget they can actually walk. I use to run and walk everywhere. I also hiked all over Oregon's mountains. Then one little accident and I can't walk 100 yards without breaking down and crying and popping loads of pain killers. And because my work was in construction all I can afford now is a cane and more pain killers and being trapped at home. Such a Segway would be like getting a new life.

  • @boobookins dont give up. ive been struggling with back pain for over a year now and im 23

  • @bm0thescholar

Try Yoga, and Thai Chi warm up exercises. I had bad knees for about 8 years, and one Thai Chi knee exercise fixed it in a matter of few days.

  • @boobookins what happened?

  • @boobookins your not alone, same here, extensive spinal surguries, limit me to about the same, pain pills, sitting at home.I was a A mechanic for a Chrysler dealer, loved my job, made big bucks, this is what I need, sit down chair that doesn't take up space, this would give me my life back, but I could never afford something like this,I'm on disability.

  • @boobookins if you did not walk up that moutain you would not of had that accident

  • excuse me, but this wheelchair is for people with disabilities. They would probably love to be able to walk long distances if they could.

  • o wow

  • awesome!

  • I think you justl ike saying Adult-Toy.

  • By your definition of "safe" walking would be really dangerous. When walking you don't have any protection for your... well for anything. Unless you wear a helmet and elbow/knee pads when walking.

If you need training to use a Segway your are a retard. It took me 30 seconds to learn how to use one. It is easier than walking. Of course your being a retard might explain why you use a helmet and elbow/knee pads when walking.

  • Dear XCX,

It is not very nice to call someone a retard; if you are not their doctor then you probably have miss diagnosed the fellow.

    .

Using a wheelchair of any discription for the first time is usually traumatising for the mobility impared patient.

    .

Most new wheelchair device users are in pain and have been housebound, prior to their decision in desparation, to make use of a mobility device; there are other psycho-social considerations for the patient too.

    cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Dear YesYesYouAreRight

My comment was directed to lagranpichota several comments below. YouTube just misplaced the comment. This fellow went on a profanity laced rant about how Segways are dangerous and hard to use.

I said that if he, a physically normal person, needed training to use a Segway he must have sub average cognitive functioning and/or deficits, ie "mental retardation". This is a reasonable assumption giving the statements of lagranpichota.

  • Dear XCitronX,

Thanks for the response to my comment.

    .

Thanks for drawing my attention to aspects of my view that were not quite sound.

    .

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • @lagranpichota (you bragger)

Your name tells us all what kind (and the quantity)of grey cells you carry inside that huge melon of yours.

  • Only thing that would make this complete is if it ran off of bald eagle heads and diamonds

  • LMAO

  • Rolling Cascate

    lol

  • wow he needs a ramp to get it off the car by like 3 feet

  • Well, let me know when you lose at least $5000 when you don't use a ramp to lower a heavy piece of equipment.

  • a cripple at my high school has one

  • You are just an accident away from a life long disability yourself..... count your blessings!

Please.... Physically Challenged.... PERSON with a disability....

Ignorance is a word I would like to "LABEL YOU" with!!

I withdraw my comment.... if you retract yours.

  • then it dies and the old man smashes his face onto the pavement.

  • LOL

  • aha, come one guys, not a very good idea

what happens when the battery dies, the old person just false flat on there face?

    needs air bags or something=P

  • That's what hitler said

  • be5ary

  • a rolling Lawsuit on 2 wheels

  • This will be useful for when old people go to the playground.

  • lol this is what gm spent the bailout money designing -.-

  • Actually no, GM was no involved in this project.

  • "This prototype represents only the first step of whats possible in a technology collaboration between Segway and General Motors."

  • segway could do this on ists own !

    they should let gm fall

  • Before the segway, dean Camen actually developed a wheelchair using the same technology that allowed handicapped people to climb stairs

  • Dean Kamen....

  • right

  • Good lateral thinking with the design, but isn't the major issue with the Segway that when the battery dies the thing just falls over? Not really what you want if you are disabled and a rather undignified end to that casual trip to the supermarket.

  • it isn't the end unless you get mugged as vulnerable

  • Not for the disabled. Just for people too lazy to even stand up on a Segway.

  • WANT lol

  • HEY YOUR THAT PHONNY!

  • Err, and my question would be that WHAT POWERS THIS THING? WHERES THE ENGINE?!

  • lol... battery

  • PHONNNY

  • wait a minute your not handy cap... you phony you big fat phony,,,,,,hey hey your that phony

  • .....are you kidding me?

I'll assume you have legs, so I'll ask you. Are you not capable of pretending to have limited leg movement? I'm quite certain he doesn't need to be even partially crippled to be able to imitate how a person with limited mobility might move.

  • big fat phonnnnnyyyyy!!!!

  • that was just a family guy quote. ppl on youtube seem to have a beef with everything everyone says

  • What, just because he shifted seats the wrong way; who are you? colombo's wife ?

  • I'd like to see that vertical handlebar post put off center, so it's not between the rider's legs. That way, if/when you take a header, you don't end up straddling the post. The basic segway design seems like a trip hazard waiting to happen.

  • no you suck

  • You poor able bodied person with an inability to see past the minimal experiences you may have experienced; your life is so horrible and people in wheelchairs are always abusing you by making you get stuff. How sad and pathetic! What exactly is it that makes you a victim? Is it because you can't stop SUCKING on the negativity tit?

    SERIOUSLY, get over yourself!

I know I can't change your attitude, but you can.

  • FAIL

  • good now i can use a segway

  • so its a Segway with a seat?

  • i want 1... off road version but, be sick for camping. how much??

  • 13'' and yes.

  • I think it's a cool modification. It could be useful for those that get short on breath during walks (due to medical conditions...not being overweight). Either way. I think it's a lot more portable than those little electric scooters you see in Walmart etc. Good Job!

  • Or people that get short of breath by even standing on their Segways as they go...

  • Okay, but ... I have one leg ... use crutches ... don't use a prosthesis ... have just started using a wheelchair to get around the house. How the FUCK am I gonna get this thing outta the back of my car ... alone? Looks like alot of work to me.

  • jeez, use the force. Duh!!

  • Every time I try to use the force, the cat gets slammed against the wall.

  • even the handicap are becoming lazy this is madness

  • THIS IS SPARTA!

  • I want one...

  • LAUGH OUT LOUD! that is a segway for lazy people not crippled!

  • wow. thats some dr.xaevier x-men stuff

  • pmsl I was thinking exactly the same, if the guy had shved hi head rofl
