@Penguin1787 I'm pretty sure he is a common snapping turtle. Bowser never displayed the worm-tongue, lie-in-wait style of hunting that is characteristic of alligator snappers.
@gothikafan I ended up feeding him about 6 times per month. He also always seemed ravenous... but his growth seemed directly related to his food intake, so I fed him less to slow his growth rate since housing him was getting expensive.
@Robomonkey5000 I think they are some kind of freshwater goby. I caught them in the wild in a river in northern MI, but I think they are considered an 'invasive" species. They were some of my favorite fish; they could actually change color to match their background and they had cool lizard/frog faces.
@callerofmusic I almost always found food for him in the wild. Frogs and crayfish made up the majority, with a handful of beetles and other bugs whenever they were handy.
@blublast3 Nah I would much rather have mine trained to eat pellets, which can be done from a very young age as well, turtles learn to eat new food very easily. Its harder with wild turtles but not impossible to switch them over. You can still feed them the occasional crayfish or whatever, they eat pretty much anything, but pellet food is better and cheaper and easier to feed.
I bought a reaaaaally tiny minnow to see if she would eat it, the second I dropped it into her tank it chased it down and ate it lol, I found a worm that she seemed to enjoy to.
I figure they'd be more likely to eat fruits / veggies when they are young, thanks for your advice!
@f0r3v3rl33t As juveniles, they are very heavily carnivorous. mine used to like crickets and "wax worms", which are fly larvae (maggots, but farm-raised and clean) and are often sold in fishing stores as bait. Tiny crayfish can be found if you carefully look under rocks in shallow streams. Houseflys with a wing or two cut off or small minnows would also work. Variety is important, as is movement. Ground beef wiggled on a piece of string can also be used. Good luck.
@STProductionFilms This is a 90 gallon tank... same size as a 55, but 18 inches wide instead of 12 and several inches deeper. I think for turtles, a wide tank is better than a long narrow one. Also, snappers are REALLY MESSY! The bigger the tank, the better; and water changes are your friend. I used to change about 50 gallons per week out of the 90.
@mouserusker Thanks for the reply man. I plan on buying a 120 gallon here in about a week, I found some woman selling it for 300 bucks. I'm going to try to put all of my snappers in their own tanks, atleast 75 gallons each. When they are older I'm going to build a 500 gallon plywood tank for each of them, I just have to study up on how to use fiber glass lol.
@STProductionFilms I think an outdoor pond would be awesome for a semi-wild, semi-pet snapper. Then it could get REALLY big and eat chipmunks and squirrels... plus, no water changes!
@Bombsgalor The gobies were wild-caught here in a local river, and i do believe they are an invasive species. "By law supposed to kill them"... makes it sound like I'm supposed to be spending my free time in an anti-goby campaign snorkeling in the river. Maybe with a torch and a pitchfork or sword?
Seriously, though: I don't worry too much about "invasive species"... they didn't come from outer space. Who are we to say where a certain species "belongs"?
Thats a good thing to feed em crayfish! its my turtles favourite. I found it cool how your turtle didn't snap away the pinchers first. My turtle once got one by the tail and the crayfish curled around and pinched his fave and neck. He just closed his eyes and went apeshit with his claws. When your turtle snaps does he close his eyes? After that battle mine does always
@yannickTheGreat I respected the crayfish and the turtle equally. I figured that if the turtle lost an eye, it was a fair fight. The crayfish is justified in fighting for it's life. That being said, in dozens of crayfish, Bowser never got injured. Snappers are just built to tough.
@yannickTheGreat thanks. I was worried about the turtle at first, but this was my private nature display. In the wild, turtles eat crayfish; crayfish fight as though their lives depend on it. If the crayfish were to take out one of bowser's eyes, it would have been unfortunate, but fair. Turns out, bowser absolutely dominated everything in his path.
Now that u don't have bowser, do u even still have any turtles, I catch turtles every year I've had bout 40 res, 10 huge snappers, 6 mud turtles and 5 musk turtles, it's really cool to catch baby snappers. The ones I got now have all been ordered lol, but it's all good, I'm go crazy over turtles when I seen them in the road, I'll stop put my emergency lights on and jump out to save it, my brother says I need a turtle intervention
@SnappalacDeville After I released Bowser, I had a small painted turtle for about a year. He was released this summer, so I currently have no turtles living with me.
@skyev117 The crayfish were cool to watch in their own right, so I would put a dozen or so in Bowser's tank at once. Bowser would immediately kill about half of them: the other half would last less then a week. Then I would just get more. Crayfish make a great freshwater clean-up crew, so I liked having some live ones in his tank at all times, but it was a challenge to stay ahead of Bowser's appetite!
@cheezitz1111 Crayfish are like natures MRE's... they are plentiful, prepackaged, full of nutrients, and pretty cool to watch in their own right before they become dinner. Actually, it sounds like they are better than MREs.
@DJ001mixer The fish always seemed most interested in stray bits of crayfish to eat; they never seemed to see these events as a possible glimpse of their own futures...
What kind of turtle is this.. like it's actual name.. i know its a snapping turtle.. cause i used to have one and i am really would like to get another one...
@Kecleonfan666 I truly believe that most life on earth doesn't "feel" pain like humans do. They receive nerve impulses that tell them they are being physically damaged, but I believe it is only humans who attribute such an emotional response to "pain". A crayfish will regrow lost limbs; such an event would be so traumatic for a person that they wouldn't live through losing the limb in the first place. If wild animals were burdened by pain (as we know it), they would be unable to survive.
@cwbrider16 That was a cool video. I like your natural-style tank. Does your snapper never attack the catfish? In my experience, it is only a matter of time...
Every asshole and warmonger in the history on the world has one thing in common: they were people. Humans. Just like every good person and innocent child. People are what they are. But I digress...

fuck you you stupid racist little piece of **** for your information you fool my parents were jews and guess what bitch i'm proud of them and we don't care about you think fool
lol cool video i just got a snapping turtle yesterday and he is the size of a golf ball! and at 2:39 that fish didnt even have a chance of taking that crayfish away from Bowser!
He eats every one he can catch. Only a very few fish survived a stay with Bowser. An eel, a bass, and a sunfish or two made it. Many, many things didn't.
My biggest problem has always been brown/yellow water from the tannins in the natural, uncured wood I used for decoration. I don't even really consider it a problem, since all of the streams and most of the lakes in this area are the same color as my tank for the same reasons.
im loving how...because this is a crayfish and not say....a mouse... people arent complaining about your turtle tearing into it. If it was a mouse gaurenteed the PETA nuts would be on here calling you a monster and hoping something would eat you xD
Dude... Bowser is a fucken BEAST...!!!! Is he an alligator snapping turtle...?

However, if you respond to this guy, he'll just come back. He will like the attention.

your turtle doesnt eat those fish
tico33135 2 years ago
He eats every one he can catch. Only a very few fish survived a stay with Bowser. An eel, a bass, and a sunfish or two made it. Many, many things didn't.
The quick, smart ones lived.

how do u keep tha water so clean? when my turtle eats a crayfish... there is so MUCH mess that it clouds tha water...
punisher37 2 years ago
Actually, I do very little for water quality.
I think the biggest factor is that it's a fairly large (90 gallon) tank.
Also, I don't feed him all that often.

try using a huge filter. I use an askoll 400 with 1300 liters an hour capacity for just 150 liters of water. the water is crystal clear.

My biggest problem has always been brown/yellow water from the tannins in the natural, uncured wood I used for decoration. I don't even really consider it a problem, since all of the streams and most of the lakes in this area are the same color as my tank for the same reasons.

r thos fish blugill or sunfish
synyster215 2 years ago
I think they are sunfish, but we have both up here, and they interbreed, so it's hard to be sure.

im loving how...because this is a crayfish and not say....a mouse... people arent complaining about your turtle tearing into it. If it was a mouse gaurenteed the PETA nuts would be on here calling you a monster and hoping something would eat you xD
