In the novel Hooper gets killed and eaten by the shark. He was supposed to be killed in the movie, but when they filmed the scenes in the movie a real shark came along and attacked the stunt man in the cage. The stunt man got out of the cage and fortunately escaped. They got it on film and decided to keep it in the movie.

In the novel Matt Hooper was more of a jerk. He had some affair with Brody's wife and was generally spoiled rotten by his rich parents.

The shark actually catches Hooper and brings him up to the surface, where either Quint or Brody shoots him with a rifle to end his suffering. This is what Spielberg intended to shoot, however the real white shark that got tangled into the wires holding the (empty) cage produced such great images, Spielberg decided to make Hooper survive.

But since the radio and the boat itself are both screwed, both Quint and Brody are prepared to give Hooper's fancy equipment a shot. I don't know that either Quint and Brody specifically hated Hooper as a person.
