It is sad indeed what is still going on with the Redwoods. I live in Australia so I don't have the luxury of just popping up there for a trip. I have been to see the Kauri pines of New Zealand though, went to see Tane Mahuta and it really is an awesome experience hiking through a forest and then the larger, older Kauris come into view. Tane Mahuta's girth is 13.8m and has a wow value I hadn't experienced prior to my trip there.
Great vid again, has bumped up seeing the Redwoods on my list.
googoo: Paper is made from trees planted for the purpose of making paper..They don't use old growh..Paper comes from trees grown, recently in renewable forests.
Not true. Indonesia has such a problem with illigal logging they asked the international community to only buy wood from designated suppliers. The only country to say no was the USA and ...wait for it ... that was because they said it would be too damaging to the US economy.
Ancient forests are being destroyed all over the world for all sorts of uses because it's easier than proper forestry.
Maxihead:??What's not true?...I don't want old growth cut down unneccesarily. I never said that...I said, that the [paper we use today comes from forests recently grown for the purpose of making paper, which in the mean time, cleans the air by growing trees....Can you admit that there is some responsible forestry?
"Paper is made from trees planted for the purpose of making paper..They don't use old growh"
I wasn't saying you wanted to abuse our environment, I was just disagreeing with your above statement - illegal irresponsible logging is a massive problem.
It's worth noting the US stance on this too as there's so many on youtube.
Illegal logging does not end up producing paper..Sorry......The paper around you came from trees planted recently for that purpose...Dont worry about using paper bags at the store or reading the newpaper......Much illegal logging is a result of the environmentalists push for ethanol..
"paper around you came from trees planted recently for that purpose."
I didn't know that ... but still surely the more land used for paper the less there is for timber unless you use old-growth? It's still a good idea to avoid using paper if you can.
"Much illegal logging is a result of the environmentalists push for ethanol" I agree there needs to be FAR more education and co-ordination as far as environmental policy is concerned.
This doesn't really matter - This does not give any permission to cut them down etc. This does not change the fact that they ARE old enough and they ARE a treasure of the nature. Once cut down they will not regrow in many generations to this place - if the area will return to its prevois glory at all.
Who wants to cut these down??? Not me.. We can agree they should be protected...That being said, in the big picture, the redwoods are new to the area, they are not native, and for most of the history of man in this area, they werent here...{they started growing here only a couple of thousand years ago"
I think you've gotten some of your data mixed up johnnyk2112. There are living trees in the redwood forests a couple thousand years old. They are native to the Pacific coast. From what little I could glean on the net they were distributed throughout Asia, Europe, and North America from about 160-5 millions years ago. Changes in climate reduced the genera to three and shrunk their ranges.
what was that thing at the top right corner of screen at 3:55

i Could swear at 4:37 i am looking at some manner of soft coral.
Tell me did you notice any obvious Cnidaria in these pools?
Those Orange structures look Very much like Millepora.
Ether that or they are some manner of sponge.
They look quite attractive!
Cnidarious 3 years ago
on second thought those orange structures probably are not Millepora, but it does look strikingly like it.

The Redwoods are great. They've cut down most of the big ones by the roads. You really need to walk further into the forest to see the Giant trees.

The metal rods you're referring to for that bridge just might be post-tension cables, if I'm not mistaken.
My dad was into bridges and my brother-in-law is sometimes into highrises. They'd know about this better than I would.
