Do you ever get the feeling that Animal Collective fans have trouble accepting that their band isn't perfect? These guys make some of my favorite music (if not all haha) but there's no denying this is a crappy performance. I don't give a fuck if this is before merriweather, that excuse can only go so far.
the only thing wrong with this performance is the vocals being waaaay too loud. I bet they can't even hear their own singing. That's why they're so off key
To those complaining about how they play this song here, shame on you! This video is from 2007 which likely means this is a very early version of the song they were still working through... It's one of the best parts of their show, to hear unreleased material!
I love this song... But that's the way they play it live? Such a fucking crap! I'm just deeply disappointed... Hope it's not the unique version of it... In fact the trouble was on vocals... the rest was quite nice...
@BardoCadu I totally agree with you... this is one of my favorite songs of all time. But, WTF??? Deeply disappointed totally covers my reaction. I don't care how long before the recorded version. Crap!
@BardoCadu well man look at the datem this if from 1 and half before they released merryweather and 1 year and a half before they finished the song
they haven't define the vocals totally, check out the other songs from merryweather from this gig and you see what i mean, not even the music is 100% finished they were still figuring out how the song was suppoused to be
Crazy, I was passing through St Louis that night & went to this show. Thanks for posting this, now I know what it was I couldn't see from where I was standing.
you can't say you love animal collective and say you wouldn't pay to see them.. that's a complete contradiction of your statement, "i love animal collective". fucking chode waffle
I dunno. I love Brian Jonestown Massacre and don't intend to go to their next tour, just because i have doubts about their consistency. It's true studios are magic, but Animal Collective can replicate their studio sound and even improve on it in a live context.
this is from 08 still, when they play it when I last saw them (May 09) it sounds almost exactly like the studio version. they've really nailed many of their live songs on the current tour.
actually I believe this is from the 2007 tour... they didn't play also frightened during the 2008 tour and only started playing the album version in 2009
AC's the shit, but the studio version of this song is about 10,000 times better than this weird, live version. It's waaaay too echoey and odd, like they were on acid at the time and they thought this sounded amazing. XD. It's a little spacey cool though, I guess. Once again though, AC IS AMAZING so don't get me wrong. I'm just not a big fan of some of their live stuff.
I'd have to say this song is the most pleasing in its album form. However, that being said, when I saw them play this I was honestly a little scared/uncomfortable. And I think the fact that the song could have that impact makes it awesome.
Animal Collective chooses to make music with interesting melodies, which I really enjoy. Some of these melodies are more challenging to sing because they are so different. That being said, it's really hard to tell in this recording if he's not hitting the notes or if the song is just so different that its uniqueness causes that jarring feeling that I'm getting from listening.

wow... avey is not a good singer. i've seen them before live and i think they've gotten worse. still one of my favorite bands but certainly not because of their performances...
