The Katana or Samurai sword is steel that uses a folded process that makes it stronger than iron blades that Scotsman used. The Katana is regarded to be the finest combat sword ever created; so that makes it an ideal choice and a wise one as well.

When watching this series keep in mind that the training and skills Conner gave Duncan has kept him alive for centuries!

It appears the episode # and original airdate on this are incorrect. Not surprising, considering how jumbled the info o ut there on the series is. I was all kinds of confused at how Richie was suddenly living with them in episode 2. After some digging I found it was supposed to be #11, I think.
Though at this point I'm still puzzled why they took Richie in so easily. I guess it's because Mac could sense his potential immortal-ness, but that's in hindsight.

Mac does own a Claymore. I believe Methos gave it to him when he was trying to get rid of the dark quickening. Mac uses the Katana as it was a gift from his Japanese shidoshi (teacher) and is a far better sword than the Claymore.
@usacyrano That claymore was the clan MacCleod sword that Mac was supposed to inherit before he died and was cast out when he came back alive. It was given back as he does not feel right using it. It resides @ an inn in scotland owned by a MacCleod descendant
Because a Claymore (like the O-katana)is a battlefeild blade and very difficult to use in one on one close in combat the Katana is a nice blade very sharp and easyer to manuver. However not easy to use Lots of practice.
@jeb2368 Not to mention a full claymore would be much harder to conceal. Plus he was exiled from his clan so he doesn't feel right using it. They deal with this when he visits the family in Scotland.
a katana is lighter than a claymore, more aerodinamic, better on one to one kombat and more than that, a Katana can cut even trough metal, a claymore cannot. And more than that the katana had sentimental value for him. It was a gift from one of his teachers. He started by using a claymore probably, if that makes you happier...
At 15 min into the show there is a song playing that I have loved for years, but no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to find out what it is. Can anyone tell me?
Now I understand how he can be from the highlands of Scotland and another planet. I was always confused about the continuity between the show and the movie.
the other world thing was a mistake, everyone agrees, that's why the second movie was recut to remove that. it was the only one where they used that story line and nothing else uses that, this show included.
the fact with two worlds was a reference to believe in reincarnation. they died as aliens reincarnated as humans and the power remained in them... the reference is only in one or two of the movies
Now that I'm watching this, I'm just seeing the signs of Richie's identity. It's nice to notice these things. I just wish the other seasons were up as well.

Growing up, I saw this show up until a major point which I wont spoil later into the series, but its good to watch it again.
This is such a high quality show.
