  • what mark did you get?

  • @788acw Haha, had to go back and check my records. 83. :)

  • @JustAnotherFlutist history 1 or 2?

  • @dragonmaster97531 You mean the one I got 83 in? History 3. But it's still called "Grade 5 History" on my records. Have they done away with the "Grades" now?

  • @JustAnotherFlutist haha gjob :)

  • @788acw Thanks to good old practice exams! ;D

  • My exam is in 2 days!!! I still cannot get everything in my head!! I was wondering, if i fail, do you know how the rewrites work?

  • @dragonmaster97531 Please don't worry too much, it's not the end of the world and you won't die! All you'll need to do is register again. But first, have you been practicing on the old exams (last year's)? If you have, you'll be just fine! I know it feels scary to walk into an exam not knowing EVERYTHING, but trust me: find patterns in the old exams, figure out what they like to ask and how they want you to answer. That's the key to doing well.

  • @JustAnotherFlutist I have many old exams and i have finished them, but none of them without my notes. I really cant actually memorize the main 11 compositions from Baroque and Medieval era.. At this point, i feel like i'm going to take a chance and only choose specific ones to specialize in. I can do all the Medieval and Renaissance stuff, but i cannot memorize the long pieces and the musical styles. :/

  • @dragonmaster97531 Well... do you remember the answers you ended up putting on the old exams for the Baroque & Medieval composition sections? Chances are... you'll be writing down very similar answers 2 days from now. ;) Study your old exams!

  • @dragonmaster97531

I actually had to BS a 5 point essay on Ave Maria for my exam this summer (as in completely write about random stuff). I knew the basis of the work (composer, genre) and nothing else. As long as you know the music from that period, especially for that particular genre, you'll be able to write a lot of generic things and they'd give you close to perfect marks. :D Especially for Grade 4 History there're two pieces of the same genre so just know one of them :D

  • @tonyyezj I know all of the medieval and renaissance pieces, so i would love for those to appear. The only thing i am scared of are the essays (the classical ad baroque pieces plus the composer's musical styles) :(

  • @dragonmaster97531

Definitely study your musical styles!! They're important. And knowing Piano Concerto in G/Pathetique/Moonlight might be useful, and also Symphony G minor/London Symphony because it wasn't on my exam last session.

  • @dragonmaster97531 Remember this: It's not about knowing all the answers; it's about knowing what to expect.

Chin up, take big, deep breaths, and squeeze every drop of music history knowledge you have in your head onto that exam! Let me know how it goes!

  • I hate these exams :( There`s just way too much to memorize

  • @dragonmaster97531 Haha, I hear you. That's why I just resorted to practicing on the old exams. You see patterns arising in the sorts of things they ask. A lot of times, studying for exams is more about knowing what questions to expect than memorizing as many facts as possible. Chances are, you're only going to be using at most 40% of what you study if you memorized everything. ;)

  • @JustAnotherFlutist My exam is on the December 9th, and i have to start memorizing everything now. All the Baroque and classical pieces are so long (I'm doing history IV) . Medieval music is rather interesting

  • @dragonmaster97531 Best of luck! :)

  • @JustAnotherFlutist Thanks so much! I need all the luck i can get! Btw, i'm from toronto too lol

  • @dragonmaster97531 Wow, right where RCM actually is! I actually just moved from Vancouver to San Francisco, so a big hearty hello and best wishes from the West Coast! :)

  • Your hot!!!

  • What a cool video. I've never had anyone just explain the exam like this.

One point I have for anyone doing these exams is this:

Only study pieces and composers that are listed IN THE SYLLABUS. If you answer a question like "Name a Waltz by Mozart" by correctly writing down a Mozart Waltz that is NOT listed in the syllabus, you still get marked incorrectly. :(

    Super lame, I know...

  • Any comments on the new 11th edition of "The Enjoyment of Music"?

  • @mathewgene I personally don't like the enjoyment of music at all! I find each version is not much different. I actually recommend Explorations series ... they are much better!

  • @JustAnotherFlutist

    Hi!

Thank you very much for this video it really helped me get an overview of self-study history! :)

    I have one little question,

a lot of people told me History II is easier than History I and in history II i dont need to study the style point of compossers and their lifes.

Is it true I dont need to study them?

  • @Genie8225 You don't need to study them if their names are NOT highlighted in the syllabus! :)

  • Do you have any tips for analysis exams? (question types, etc...) I'm taking both harmony 5 and analysis exams in may, and i'm really starting to panic.

I discovered your channel just now and I really like the videos I've seen... If you can give me any advice (or better yet, make a video!) that'll be super awesome. Thanks :)

  • @PerpetualHope Sure! I will be making more RCM-related videos very soon, no worries! I've been planning to make them for a while now, but school got really busy recently, and I'm now back to making these kinds of videos now. When is your exam? I can probably get a Harmony & Analysis video out for you soon! :)

  • @JustAnotherFlutist It's the second week of May, really soon.... If you have time to make one that'll be great! Thanks so much

  • sry i mean joannA. k i'm gonna register to do both them exams for this december. are you related to gary tse lol

  • @kalunis Ahaha, no, I'm not related to Gary Tse, but yes, everyone's been asking me that ever since I arrived at UBC four years ago! :P

  • joanne, thnx for this awesome video. i was wondering if it is possible to study for history 2 and history 3 in 20 days. i.e. start studying 20 days before the exam? i will study full-time, no other commitments, and i have good study habits.

  • @kalunis Oh, you'd definitely pass!! You just need to do A LOT of practice exams (old exams that have been republished). If you do all of them (or as many as you can), you'll get through it no problem! You'll start noticing patterns in the exams--there is a lot of recurring questions or topics. :) Don't overwork yourself, 'kay? Better be alert and awake than drowsy because of overstudying!! :) Best wishes on your exam!!

  • :) Did you enjoy the RCM history exams or did you forget most of it after you learned it?

For me, I forgot most of it.. I didn't find it overly useful. What are your thoughts?

:) this is a great video though. I wish I saw it a few years ago when I was doing my history 3 and 4 exams. I've been holding off doing history 5 mainly because I have no motivation to keep going and it won't bring me in any more money. ^_^

  • @Lypur Hey there! Well, I actually learned most of the stuff at music school and adapted it for RCM, but there was definitely a lot of material that I forgot after I came out of the exam centre, haha! I think because there are a lot of younger kids taking these exams, the difficulty level has been brought a bit lower. Great for kids, but maybe not older students? Hm.

  • Thank you so much for the video response! =) It was really, really, helpful!

I already did my History 1 (Grade 3 History) exam this August. I studied on my own and I think I did really well on the exam. I have all the materials that you recommended. I look stuff up on the Internet, because some of the details provided (in the textbook) for certain works weren't enough to get full points on essays. Just out of curiosity, when will you be doing your History 3 exam? Thanks again! =)

  • @tonyyezj Hey there!! I'm so glad this helped, and I wish you the best for your History 2 & 3 exams! I actually already finished all the history courses last year. ;) This year, I finished up Harmony 5 and Analysis 5, so I'm all done the theory courses now. If you need any tips to study for the other exams, let me know! :D Cheers!
