The bass player was a personal friend of mine...Ben Brogden...we worked together with Donna Fargo back in the "good ole days"...and remained friends until he passed away. Also in the band was Herby wallace on steel and Odell Martin on guitar...a scary band!
This is simply gorgeous my friend Glyn sent this to me, I don't think I have heard anything so wonderfully played, like someone says Leonard T Zinn loves every sound how wonderful a life.
Pedalman.... Hearing this cut, I can well believe it is among the best of the best. Your comment about John's ability to play with complexity, but with good taste choosing to go with more simplicity reminds me of another example of ultimate musicianship in the banjo work of the recently deceased Allen Shelton.
I used to play for a southern gospel group and we were recording at the Oaks Place studio. They had John and Sonny Garrish do some steel work on the recording. My dad was learning to play steel at the time and Look At Us hadnt been out very long. My dad just loved the steel in that song. I got both of their pictures and autographs for my dad. And John sat down and showed me exactly how he played the break in that song. I remembered it long enough to get back home and show dad. He was a nice guy.
Just to my individual ear, there were two really HIGH points of the wonderful instrument I know as Pedal Steel Guitar. The first was Buddy's introduction to Ray Price's rendition of "Night Life," and the second is John's intro, to "Look at Us," by I think Vince Gill. It just (to me) not GET.........any better than this!!! And yes, I agree with you Bill, that L.T.Zinn is ALWAYS happy! Thanks for posting this one.
This is a master class in taste and professionalism. Here is a man who could play with such complexity but he doesn't ...its just beautiful touch tone and feeling, he did it all and does not have to prove one thing.
I met John in Louisville in 1973 when he was with Conway at a show with Loretta and Jeannie Pruitt. He was a total gentleman and easy to talk to, and what excruciatingly good steel! It just can't get any better. We all miss him and the unique sound he produced for us!
Hey people. Just a heads up. LT is no slouch to the steel guitar himself. Check out some of his non-pedal Hawaiian steel guitar work on YTube. Just type in L T Zinn.
Bill, Thank you for setting the record straight, Tis such a shame John is not with us any more, Your playing on I Love You So Much It Hurts is supurb, awsome tone and execution. I live in New Zealand, and have just brought a Rains SD10 4 pedals and 5 levers, and i run it through a late 80s Webb 614E amp, its sounds fabulous but im still a green horn as far as playing is concerned,i find it hard to obtain tab stuff over here, anyway, Such a pleasure to listen to, thanx a million, Des
Now this is NOT a mickey-take! But who is the 'old fella' playing rhythm guitar on this? He seems to be enjoying every note that the maestro is playing - I guess you musicians are lucky to enjoy such a fantastic medium - and get paid for doing so! Long may you ALL continue! :-)
My wife and I had the privlege of seeing John perform a few times, and each time seems as though he would put more soul into his playing. We will miss him.
I know hy his his heart gave out....he gave it out to everyone who could listen. I never had the chance to actually see Mr. Hughey play live....thanks to Bill we can all see the master on this video.
Thanks for sharing this. So lovely. No one like John! I had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions in my studio and in The Station Inn with the Time Jumpers. Such a nice and gifted person. God bless his soul.
Great steel work. Thanks for posting. Quick question--does anyone recognize the drummer in this clip? My cousin Billy Thomas played with Vince Gill and this looks a bit like him, but I can't tell for sure.
The best; I miss this gent so very much. Patterned much of my playing after his style. I always wanted him to record a Christmas album, but he took that one with him...
I had the great pleasure and privilege to work with John through the 70's and 80's. What a consumate musician, and fine gentleman he was. He will be missed.
Just found out John left us in Nov 2007 -- A big loss for all of the Steelers in the world -- His music will be remembered forever. What a memorable player
I've commented on this video before, but watching it again, I've just got to mention that there (imho) were two really great "moments" in the history of this beautiful sounding instrument, one was Buddy's intro break on Ray Price's Night Life, and the other was John's intro break on Vince Gill's Look at Us. Obviously there are so many more wonderful moments in Steel Guitar History, but for me, these two instrumentals are the pinacle.
Rest with God, John, you are missed by oh so many of us.
The Greatest ever showing us why he was the greatest ever...I'll miss you, John, and always cherish the times we played and chatted. We're all better people for having known you. RIP, my friend. -KK

John was a friend of mine when I lived in Nashville from 2000-2005, he had a kind word to say and I good word of advice. I will truly miss him and there will never be anyone like him, may he rest in peace.
John Hughey passed away last night. Very suddenly and very sad to hear the news. Another gentleman steel player, played with the best. We enjoyed you always and will miss you always.
The root of the steelguitar is the hawai-guitar. In the early years steelguitar players had guitars with 3 necks each neck having a different tuning. In the 50´s the idea came up to put pedals on the "hawai-guitar" to have just one neck to play with. The pedalsteelguitar wich is based on the hawai guitar is an american invention and more or less just used in c&w music.
I didnt feel a shiver or two at all ,nope ! just one big one all the way through, that is just immense pedal steel playing like you would expect from one of the legends.
John does not play with Vince except on a rare ocassion. John works with the Time Jumpers in Nashville, does studio work and plays steel guitar shows. AND he goes fishing.
I have one of the only 2 tapes from this show. However, you can purchase this song done in a prefessional studio, directly from John Hughey's web site.
