I've been shooting a Thompson Center .50 cal Hawkin rifle since 1976, and I still use black powder, but, I now use Thompson Center Maxi Balls, aka, a solid lead conical bullet, for more knock down power, and quicker reloading. If you use a traditional muzzle loader with a side lock, be it flint lock of cap lock, its best to use black powder which will ignite much easier. As for cleaning, I have used hot soapy water for years, but with carbon build up, I use WS40 now, and my barrel, is clean.
