Sorry, but I can't abide these weird contraptions............Bulleid was a quirky man and it's reflected in his even quirkier designs, BUT, as I have said elsewhere before about this particular trip, the loco appoints itself well ! 5 *s to engine and crew.
Found after numerous 'outings' doing this, the only way for stable vid is to concoct a mount for your camera and fix it to the coach window, much better than attempting to 'wedge 'yourself in trying to hold it steady , never the less pretty good show.beeman37
Occasionally, we saw scheduled fast & semi-fast services unassisted up Bincombe Bank (not known by us locals as Upwey bank) which was done at the discretion of the driver & fireman, based on the passenger numbers boarded at Weymouth. If the train was light and the engine known to be a good steamer, the banker was stood down. There was at least 1 occasion, Maurice told me, where this proved a mistake & his 18.00 up Waterloo fast nearly ground to a halt in Bincombe Tunnel!
i have seen some engines in my time and i must say tangmere has the strongest smell of steam ever,i remeber when the merchant navys first game out and when the battle of britian class first came out and of course the west coutry class i did travel behind some of these engnes in 1947 of course at this time i was a 20 years older and i was still try to get my house back together because the bloody germans bombed my house and destroyed my pocket watch and chain
Great shots, I was sitting only a few rows behind your location in the same carriage and enjoyed the sounds and smells, and now I can see the pictures. Thanks for getting sooty for us!!
Well, in the humble opinion of the late Jim Ayles and Maurice Kent, both Weymouth-based SR drivers of tremendous mainline steam experience, the Bullied rebuilds produced better handling, firing, improved forward vision for the crew and an extremely handsome locomotive. No doubt the arguments will rage on indefinately!
Thanks for this Mark. A superb performance by all concerned. I wouldn't call any steam trip predictable after all there are so many variables that can come into play and they're not just machines. Chris
You where filming right behind me, I was in the support coach I could have got a Cab ride on this bit of track but there was to many WRCR people on the footplate.

4.30-ish I seem to remember the cromptons with 8 up in the summer were down to this sort of speed.

@beeman37
and then boom...it gets ripped off by a train traveling 125mph and hits someone in the window in the face....

Fabulous stuff. This should silence the critics of Mr. Bulleid's finest. As for the rebuilds, who needs 'em? :-)

Wonderful...excellent driving & firing. Would have preserved steam by not sounding the whistle!

Good work, but you forget to thank the Fireman. Somebody was doing a lot of shovelling up there.

Anyone who thinks Tangmere is crap now,need shooting!
alberta45562 2 years ago
Tangmere isn't crap, it's just too predictable! Clan Line suffers likewise.

Unlike GWR tat of course. Never know if they'll be hopeless or downright useless.
