I think in terms of who recognises it, Russia matters more than the rest of the world combined since only Russia sustains them now. Nobody annexed anything, they recognised a long-time declaration of independence. They did not recognise their independence for years and years. I think in terms of who recognises it, Russia matters more than the rest of the world combined since only Russia sustains them now. Undoubtedly part of the point is to be able to put better supplied military divisions there to monitor NATO activities in Georgia, which is a threat to Russian national security.

No. They received US aid before the Iraq war, in fact in 2002, I believe they were no. 2 behind Israel as recipients of US foreign aid. The reason given at the time was ironically that there were Al Qaeda in Georgia, coming over from Chechnya via the Pankisi Gorge. It is ironic because Russia claimed the same to the effect that Georgia was protecting Al Qaeda and Georgia DENIED there were ANY Al Qaeda in Georgia.

Even if it is a puppet regime, it is one that does not like ethnic Russians on the ground in Grozny, a formerly mixed city that has been mostly cleansed of Russians...there are plenty of Chechens and they have disproportionate political and economic power in New Russia.

My opinion is Russia is doing what UN did to Kosovo. Apparently we're getting a taste of our own medicine and I believe its justifiable, just ask any South Ossetian or Abkhazian and see if he or she will turn down the offer. Serbs most of whom had nothing to do with war were thrown out of their land which was given to Albanians, now that to me is unjustifiable and unacceptable. For those who disagree with me now will see I'm right in the near future. But that is my opinion.

Well for one thing the Violence was way different in Serbska than it was in Georgia. Serbia and Kosovo would continue with civil war forever if allowed to continue on as one nation. This is not the case with Georgia, Abkhazia, or S.Ossetia. 3 of the 5 Security Council members back independence with only Russia's decent and China's abstention.
