The Londonderry Air hails from my home town, Limavady, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland - beautiful..known worldwide....Jane Ross penned the tune after hearing Jimmy Currie playing it on his fiddle outside her house in Main Street, Limavady..
@rode9290 The bass is actually extraordinarily important. Originally it copied the cello line and was cut if a lighter sound was wanted. Beethoven changed that however. Gradually, the bass got its name. For the past 150 years, the bass has been saved for the most important times. The silence is noticed, and then right when needed most the bass would enter and it changes the entire sound. It's something every bassist has to understand at some point that they are indeed quality, not quantity.
So many blonds, so little intonation! But they sure can play loud!

I really like it.
I normally dislike string orchestras, but this gives it a good light. Great performance! :D

By "bass" I actually meant low instruments. I personnally prefere the brass version.

I agree that the arrangement sounds much better with brass!!

I do like this arrangement, especially the fauxbourdon-style opening with the tenor tune. Pity the sound hasn't recorded that well

This arrangement is strange... I would have given the whole melody to the 1st violin and the viola, not to the bass...
Ritzounett 4 years ago
The cello has the melody for the first several sections of the piece, not the bass... as usual, the bass didnt have the melody... poor bassists lol
