Are you familiar with the "Amazing Slow Downer" program? It's a great piece of software that lets you adjust the speed of the music without changing the pitch so you can learn and practice alongside at your own pace. You can set the start and end loop points to focus on any part you want.
@stickman33: Yes! Actually, I've mentioned the Slow Downer in many of my videos--but perhaps not in this series. It's a great tool. We didn't have it back when I was pulling licks off records.
Adam, I don't believe that it is too hard to teach. The bit you had the "problem" with is just a syncopation of the harp notes (4b, 3d) against the 4/4 time of the song. If I tap as you playit slowly, you start off on-beat but at the (4b, 3d) bar you drop into a syncopation which delays the harp notes to an off-beat position. (It is a very jazzy move on Magic's part. It is the sort of thing you hear in the drumming style of god jazz drummers.)
@Lefty090360: Yes, you've explained it very well. I've been able to execute the move myself without trouble for many decades (I was playing with people in this video :)), but it is indeed a tricky, jazzy move, and not one that inexperienced players can easily get--at least judging from the videos people send me.
No, I'd do what Mark Wenner does: I'd stack two amps--my 1956 Bassman on the bottom, probably my HarpGear HG2 on the top--and then crank the smaller amp all the way up, or almost all the way, and mic it. The big amp is for stage volume and can be tweaked up or down, as needed. I assume the JGB would be playing in a pretty big venue. Big venues allow you crank even bigger amps up to the singing-point. But I always want a smaller amp, too, since I KNOW I can crank it to the proper level.
Adam: Let's say it were 1978 and Dick's got the flu and the guys in the band call and ask you to sit in for a gig ........ would you play it with a little tube amp miked?
J. Geils Band for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! C'mon Y'all, write the letters, make the calls, we all know it's the biggest joke ever that they are not in. I live in Cleveland, and I'm not visiting it until they are in.
"Are you gonna (DJ mumbo-jumbo double speak) get it all down, get it all night, get it all right and get it outta sight and get it down, baby?" "YEAH"...
He great lesson, you make it look so easy. I was never a Blue's player but I would like to get into it. The Blues really uses the harp in a whole other tone over Celtic Music.
so funny cuase when i saw you were gonna teach this.... i was like hows he gonna teach that "hard part"... that part with the off beat vamp thing always messed me up. Theres another part that im curious to see how you approach... good luck mr. gussow... lol
Adam, you are a svengali to so many people, some of them now young geniuses.I can't impress upon you enough just how GOOD it is to see and hear you ramble and catch the pearls you throw to us re harp AND the rest!I am a 39 yr old going on 18,but hell;you would be a dream lecturer in any discipline. Please rest assured,in the words of Frampton;"we love your way"
I guess you folks have got my back, and I thank you for that. There's a Magic Dick website, BTW, and I encourage everybody to google it ("Magic Dick") and check it out.
You do fine. God Bless you for trying, this is the best series of harp lessons I have ever received. I think what you do is great. Play the real thing, and slow it down and list the tabs. It works great Anyone serious about playing the Harmonica could and should be able to pick up on the rest after some solid hours of woodshedding. You supply the foundation for us.
Hey, you taught me how to overblow, I think you can accomplish just about anything else after that. :)

Wenner uses a Champ and a Bassman, with the Champ miked. Or at least he did when I saw him. That's the right way to go.

Hello Mr. Gussow, Question; Do you favor a brand of harp?

Yes, Magic Dick talks about this in the long interview with him that I've made available for free on my website, Modern Blues Harmonica.

You got it all WRONG!!!
NOT!!!only keeeeeeding...
LOL!!!
Totally hip and right on ADAM!
Disregard that first comment. You have made the most difficult harp song accessable, and understandable to us lesser mortals.
I have wrestled with this song for a long time. I'm very curious what you'll break down next.
Perhaps Jose can enhance everyones playing, too.
I am not afraid of the dark anymore!!
