Ah...yes :) This is one of the finest movements he wrote. My favorite, of course, is still the Largo from his 9th Symphony. Arguably one of the greatest pieces ever written by any composer. So powerful and emotive.
@Smitty427NJ - Okay, I definitely have no "extensive musical background," but that theme is very familiar to me, too. It sounds like Marche Funebre by Chopin to me.
I am a total classical music novice and the first two themes in this second movement are the most beautiful I've ever heard. Can someone with extensive musical background tell me if they are original or "borrowed" from someone's earlier work? (Not that it would take away from the marvelous treatment here)The second theme is so familiar to me, even the first time I heard it. Thank you.
I have to admit that I struggle to get to grips with Dvorak most of the time, but whenever I hear that ascending cello line at 1:45, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes - There's just something so genuine about it, and Rostropovich interprets it magnificently. :)
there are in total four versions of dvorak cello concert interpreted by rostropovich, all good and interstng, i think people who have keen interests in either this cello concert or rostropovich would prabaly find something really interesng by listening to all four versions.
Genius is genius, it sounds corny; but when you are in the presence of greatness you just have to be in awe. Independently, all of these elements are simple, but to bring them together so flawlessly is a near miracle.
what a beautiful piece of music, Dvorak was a real and gigantic melodist, just to listen his marvelous symphonies(specially of course no.9) his slavonic dances, his opera Rusalka, his american quartet, his requiem and his Stabat mater, he was a true genius
yea... 3:36 to 3:47 was fantastic but you're right, the whole thing is fabulous, and dvorak and rostropovitch where genius of music. What can we say ? Thank you for all the the things you left yo our (shitty) world ? no... such a small word. With your music, you just keep us alive, and that's a lot... Classical music is the power fullest music an human ever done.. i don't know what to say, I'm just glad i can listen to them... and the others...
Indeed, I suspect it is this passage, perhaps more than any other, that is responsible for this piece so often being called the greatest cello concerto ever written.
Does anyone think a 13 year old is a little bit too young to play this mvt. (I mean like passion-wise)? Technically, anyone, as long as they try hard, can eventually conquer this piece as of notes, but how about for teens? I have never saw a teenager below, like, 15 playing this piece.
beautiful movement....fantastic orchestration......absolutely takes my breath away, it's so beautiful

does it bother anyone else that the camera shot closes in on the bow when you want to see the fingerings Rostropovich uses?

You're talking about the symphonies, yes?
In my humble opinion the seventh is undoubtedly Dvorak's best.

lol it's 'undoubtedly' his best, yet you say it's a humble opinion.
deliberate pun?

I have to bite my cheek at the thought that I might ever be sincerely humble. I only meant that I'm a musical layman. ;-)

@polymath7 LOL! No way someone who picks up the nick "polymath" can be humble... But I like the way you seem to know yourself.
IMHO, your humble opinion is correct.
