  • beautiful movement....fantastic orchestration......absolutely takes my breath away, it's so beautiful

  • Ah...yes :) This is one of the finest movements he wrote. My favorite, of course, is still the Largo from his 9th Symphony. Arguably one of the greatest pieces ever written by any composer. So powerful and emotive.

  • gives you multiple orgasms....

  • Being that the Cello is one of the instraments I play, I love Cello pieces that bring out the sound as wonderful as this.

  • why arent we focused on Rotropovich at 5:00?!?!

  • omg 3:20 is gorgeous

  • Arguably, the most gorgeous part for the horn section in the orchestral repertoire and it is in a cello concerto!

  • breathtaking...

  • 0:48 Bring him home? lol

  • @Smitty427NJ - Okay, I definitely have no "extensive musical background," but that theme is very familiar to me, too. It sounds like Marche Funebre by Chopin to me.

  • @TheSideflip - how do you know that?

  • i wish they would show him from 5:10-5:18

  • I am so happy to share this music with you all!

  • amazing...

  • So Beautiful, such powerful, yet sensitive playing.

  • So Beautiful.

  • I still don't understand how anyone can dislike this, or any of this series of videos.

  • Rostropovich was amazing on the cello.

  • @anjordan77 simply the best

  • Oh, God! This goes right into my heart. If there was a God he would save the world - just because of this wonderful music.

  • I am a total classical music novice and the first two themes in this second movement are the most beautiful I've ever heard. Can someone with extensive musical background tell me if they are original or "borrowed" from someone's earlier work? (Not that it would take away from the marvelous treatment here)The second theme is so familiar to me, even the first time I heard it. Thank you.

  • I have to admit that I struggle to get to grips with Dvorak most of the time, but whenever I hear that ascending cello line at 1:45, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes - There's just something so genuine about it, and Rostropovich interprets it magnificently. :)

  • which orchestra?

  • @Rephrat : The Great Rostropovich Playing the Dvorak Cello Concerto with Carlo Maria Giulini and the London Philharmonic Orchestra

  • Love 3:35 to 4:23

  • smooth and beautiful movement!

  • 8 Thumb down.. FUCKKK!!

  • @eeddddddyy

I believe the expression says that if a specific thing is really good, then its "thumbs up"!

  • @eeddddddyy

    Why? Be specific.

  • @colourfulwithaU I think eeddddddyy is expressing extreme astonishment at the eight people who voted against this video with a thumbs down.

  • @colourfulwithaU Who thumb down not love the music, this music

  • there are in total four versions of dvorak cello concert interpreted by rostropovich, all good and interstng, i think people who have keen interests in either this cello concert or rostropovich would prabaly find something really interesng by listening to all four versions.

    thank you for this video!!!

  • does it bother anyone else that the camera shot closes in on the bow when you want to see the fingerings Rostropovich uses?

  • Restropovich's just brilliant, unfortunetly I don't have the chance to hear this live.

  • Genius is genius, it sounds corny; but when you are in the presence of greatness you just have to be in awe. Independently, all of these elements are simple, but to bring them together so flawlessly is a near miracle.

  • @frazobe My thoughts exactly, even at the first phrase of his playing. His musicianship -- simply astounding.

  • what orchestra is playing?

  • @ankeviolin

    London Philharmonic

  • philarmonia orchestra London, Carlo maria Giulini

  • very nice impression !!!!!!!!!

rostropovich and guilini you are the great!!!!

    also dvork

  • what a beautiful piece of music, Dvorak was a real and gigantic melodist, just to listen his marvelous symphonies(specially of course no.9) his slavonic dances, his opera Rusalka, his american quartet, his requiem and his Stabat mater, he was a true genius

  • don't forget his symphonic poems!

  • and don't forget his violin concerto

  • 6 and 7 are also special, if you haven't heard them before, I recommend it

  • You're talking about the symphonies, yes?

In my humble opinion the seventh is undoubtedly Dvorak's best.

  • lol it's 'undoubtedly' his best, yet you say it's a humble opinion.

    deliberate pun?

  • (chuckle)

I have to bite my cheek at the thought that I might ever be sincerely humble. I only meant that I'm a musical layman. ;-)

  • @polymath7 LOL! No way someone who picks up the nick "polymath" can be humble... But I like the way you seem to know yourself.

IMHO, your humble opinion is correct.

  • @beethomozart I think my favorite Dvorak is his 7th Symphony...or at least, one of my favorites:)

  • From 3:36 to 3:47

Probably one the most beautiful cello part ever written...

  • i would say the same thing about the whole concerto ...

  • yea... 3:36 to 3:47 was fantastic but you're right, the whole thing is fabulous, and dvorak and rostropovitch where genius of music. What can we say ? Thank you for all the the things you left yo our (shitty) world ? no... such a small word. With your music, you just keep us alive, and that's a lot... Classical music is the power fullest music an human ever done.. i don't know what to say, I'm just glad i can listen to them... and the others...

  • but only when combined with 3:22 to 3:36

  • That's my favorite part too!

Indeed, I suspect it is this passage, perhaps more than any other, that is responsible for this piece so often being called the greatest cello concerto ever written.

  • @tromal217 Probably the greatest and most beautiful moment in music ever written :)

  • @tromal217 nope

  • @tromal217 I would say 3:36 to 3:56

  • @tromal217 perhaps some of the greatest music ever written...

  • <3

  • Does anyone think a 13 year old is a little bit too young to play this mvt. (I mean like passion-wise)? Technically, anyone, as long as they try hard, can eventually conquer this piece as of notes, but how about for teens? I have never saw a teenager below, like, 15 playing this piece.

  • I heard him play this in Chicago in 1965...one of the great musical moments of my life

  • @BillBC I heard him live in Philly with my dad....will never forget...

  • 1:25 - 1:50 , this is the heaven

  • his vibrato.

I don't think I've heard as many speeds or colors...

  • oh my like 2:20-28 is like un be lievable!

    just give me shudders

  • this second movement is exquisite

  • He loved this concerto! Thank you for posting!
