I have done this with Chris Johnson whith an IQ of around 780-790. As long as the player is a 99 speed (maybe 98) then this will almost always work. It only doesn't when you do it a lot, then running up the middle works. It's not hard at all.

though i used it... this kind of $hitty return does help you in the madden challenge with devin hester against de broncos... as a matter of fact... use the middle return then go near a sideline, stay there until you get close a defender... make some sideline to sideline running and you're off to completing the challenge fairly easily... i know it's crappy and i never used it again because it's kind of gay unrealistic football... peace
