Considering how both those referenda had such a profound effect on the whole Confederation in their own respective ways, I'm willing to hazard a guess that the line could be interpreted to refer to both. Many regions of Canada have had their own close calls when it came to whether or not they should join or even leave Confederation. Both Nova Scotia and British Columbia entertained the idea of pulling out only a few years after they joined, believe it or not.

Actually, Bcboy3n2, he is more than likely referring to when Newfoundland joined Confederation... the final vote across the island was 51% For Confederation and 49% Against. Before that, we we're our own Country.

They are Newfie, it's....it's own kind of Canadian lol. Basically they live on a giant rock on the East away from the rest of civilization and you are lucky to understand anything they say O.o

Also It would ruin the relationships with the new neighbouring countries because it would change to complete french, so they would be screwed with comnmunication

Great big sea is the best !!! Why can't we hear this music here in the states (Massachusetts)?? I discovered them while on vacation in NS way back in '97,playing Ordinary day in a record store. Ahh it's Alan Hawco! (curly haired guy) he went to school with my sister and was prom king that year. Alan also went to the same high school as me (and Alan) and Alan MC'ed my high school grad in 2002. My other sister went to school with Alan's sister Michelle and Bob's mother taught my sister in gr4. Lol wow lots of connections from a small town of about 6000 people :) I live in BC now but was born and raised in NL.
