I had this done....but ona MUCH bigger scale, on a pilon idol sinus. Basically...after 4 failed operations, the surgeons cut a huge hole, from my bum hole to the top of my bumcheeks to cut the sinus out completely. I was getting treated twice a day by a nurse, to pack and unpack the hole. My nurse could almost fit all her fingers in the hole. Took a year and a half of daily treatment before it healed!

@TheCurleymop the gauze is kept in the wound for a period of time and when the doctor gives the word theyll ethier pull it out or you can pull it out by the small tag left out side the wound and i believe they drain any fluid present in the wound then it keeps repeating until the infection gets weaker i believe thats how it works and i suppose they take some type of medication too

i had to have an op to have a polinidal sinus (ingrown hair abcess) removed at the top of my bum, which essentially just leaves a gaping hole like this. i had 6 weeks of packing done EVERY SINGLE DAY. hurts like hell, but at least i couldnt see what they were doing ;-) I feel for this guy!

That is not a brown recluse spider bite. It is a carbuncle, a skin infection caused by rebellious S. aureus bacteria invading the hair follicles. Brown recluse bites are often dark in colour from the decay of the flesh and are greater in size being irregular.

@battllefield2 By packing the wound you are also helping to prevent the wound closing from the outside in and forming an abscess. If the wound heals from the inside out, it heals by layers, you are keeping the top layers from trapping bad tissue or infection.

@robthatguyx Packing a wound allows for any infection or bits of "stuff" that might be left inside to be collected by the gauze. Removal of the gauze every day means you will get rid of the stuff that is on it, and replace it with new gauze and repeat the changing daily. This actually will allow the wound to heal faster than if you were to just close and cover it. Because, if you just close it up, you'll never know what tiny bits you've left in and it would just keep getting re-infected.

It must have been a smaller, less badd assed one this time because there was no instant necrosis of the flesh but I'll tell you one thing.
