Amazing little integra. I've had the privilege to work in the shop were this car lives hearing it every day brings a smile to my face. Nice footwork glen.
The only way you can properly rev match a non-synchromesh gearbox downshifting while braking is with a heel-toe, double clutch down shift (that's what he does at 0:12). It's better for a syncro gearbox too, you'd be suprised how many more kilometers a transmission will last if it's always double clutched properly... Wow I see not alot of people know about driving nowadays... Thumbs up to let 'em know ;)
@POPtheoriginal im confused though.. how does this sequence go? is it stepping on break, then stepping on the clutch after that do a little step/tap to rev the engine using the accelerator before changing to a lower gear? or you change the gear first before start revving? Ye ive been driven for so long and only found about this when i saw a Rally footage xD..
@POPtheoriginal I understand the heel toe and rev matching but why did he double clutch the second time and not the first? What's the double clutch do? Isn't it redundant?
The double clutch may have been to clutch through the turn. I don't know why you would use the clutch through a turn, but I know they use it for some tighter turns in F1 even though those paddleshifters don't need a clutch to operate. And before you say an F1 has no clutch, they do, its the second paddle under the shifters.
Why to double-clutch has not been addressed. Modern gearboxes have synchros at each gear to synch the rotation of gears and gear parts, but synchro assemblies are wear items. Some longer lasting than others, but the more you use it, the more it wears. Double-clutching reduces synchro wear. Having difficulty downshifting? The synchro is worn. In a track car, the gearbox is inspected at regular intervals, thus heel/toe shifting is all that's required. Want to play racer in a street car? YMMV.
drive a racing simulator online without heel toeing on gated clutch manual and u will see why u want to do it all the time.. rear wheels lock up causing the driver to maintain stability or else crash.. lose time that way but at least u don't crash
@WNxRadeon when you just downshift normally theres a lurch when the car goes into gear. in a high powered car this can cause a spin out or loss of control. when you blip the throttle it speeds up the engine to match how fast the transmission is spinning which results in a smooth transition. =)
@GeorgeC1992 it depends on pedel location and size, your foot size, what shoes your wearing your seat location position alot actually goes into heel toe
@igotastove i think coz u tend to be able to keep revs up on down shift so he dont lock up... but hey i aint no pro and this is youtube so someone bound to prove me wrong
@igotastove in older cars you had to double-tap the clutch to get the engine revs up so you could change gear smoothly, he switches to neutral, blips the gas and then changes again.
Only thing that works for me is to press the left side of my right foot on the breakpedal and blip the gas with the right side of it. Works but it will take further practice to make it work perfectly.
By now I even can't shift down without revmatching and doubleclutching to make the gearchanges easier (to protect the synchronizaton rings a little ;-) and prevent "hopping".
I also use the enginebreak as often as possible. With revmatching it doesn't harm the clutch in any way.
His feet seem to be very far away from the pedals. So he has very much space and can a Heel/Toe like this. If I would adjust my seating position in such a way, I would have to slide the seats all the way back but then i could hardly reach the steering wheel (FYI: I am 186 cm tall and I drive an E30 318is).
There isn't so much space for footwork in any normal car I have ever driven. Could it be, that the pedals have also been moved or is it just the steering wheel placed nearer to the driver?
@Ricmcspeedy987 thanks for your advice and insult! :) nobody in driving school told me about revmatching nor doubleclutching, the fact that i must learn such important and advanced driving techniques from youtube makes me sad. there is always something new to learn.
@EvilCrewMember haha I didn't mean it that you wouldn't understand what i was saying, its that i would be so horrible at explaining it lol, but yes i wish i was taught it in driving school. I learned to heel toe from youtube videos and then lots and lots and lots of practice. but after, its very much worth it. I LOVE DRIVING!
@zlyable It's so you don't use the engine for braking. This can cause the rear of the vehicle to lose traction. Therefore, rev match on a downshift while braking to keep from spinning out.
@Guitarnoob99 as soon as you put your foot on the clutch, and before you blip the throttle. you let go of the clutch after you have blipped the throttle so that way you don't use the breaks and the gas at the same time. i had the same problem when i was first learning this. now i can't drive with out!
@SLaYD666 What happens is, when the clutch is depressed, the driver revs the engine up to "match" the rpms of the new gear he is shifting into. This, if done correctly, negates the lurch that downshifting usually results in. Heel toeing, as in the video, is the process of braking, for a corner typically, while simultaneously doing a rev match downshift. Using all three pedals at once typically calls for the heel and toe of the right foot to the used, hence the name.
@SLaYD666 typically when you downshift a car, there is lurch as the engine RPMs pop up to keep speed with the lower gear. Aside from being annoying, in racing, this lurch really can mess drivers up because it offsets the balance of the car for a bit. The driver in this video is doing something called "rev matching" within a technique called "heel-toeing", which by definition includes rev matching anyway.
hey i have a question im bearly learing how to drive stander and my friend has been teaching me but when i asked him about downshifting he said that he doesnt do it.... he just puts the car on neutral and rides the break is that good for the car?? his had his car for some years and hasnt had a problem so someone explain...
@MLGSky Not bad for the car since the clutch isn't engaged. If he left the clutch engaged all the time to do it then it would be bad. In a modern car you don't need to match your gear to your speed for slowing down all the time, especially if coming to a stop. Modern cars don't need engine braking to stop. But its not the best driving technique really.
@MLGSky Heel-toeing downshifts is only necessary if you're downshifting while braking AND intend to keep the car in motion such as approaching a green-arrowed u-turn. If you're just coming to a stop then you can just hold in the clutch or shift to neutral and brake. Heel-toeing isn't even necessary in street driving but it's fun to do.
@Hardedge25 I personally, think you should never just put the car in neutral and brake. Shift down through the gears so that the power is there if you need it...say, if you notice a car in your rearview mirror about to rearend you or something.
@crash86ed I don't, I downshift, but I'm just referring to operating the vehicle, not giving out driving tips. But since you mention it, I'll let someone be at fault for rear ending me rather than me running a red light and causing an accident myself.
@Hardedge25 Oh no, running the red would be bad. I've been tboned before, and yes it would be better to be rear ended probably than run the red and risk a far worse accident.
Thank you for that. I have watched a number of the "heel toe" videos here and I was beginning to wonder if any of these people actually how to do it. This is the proper way. If you do it right and know your ride, you will be smoother than an automatic tranny and your synchro rings will never know. Some people are under the impression that using your transmission as a brake is bad for it. Not so. Double clutch, down shift and use the brakes at the same time. Smooth as silk with practice.
I heard a lot of reasons why racecar drivers execute this technique. I really think, the main reason why drivers heel-toe, is so their cars won't engine-brake, plain and simple.
@boogieboxxxbboy Engine braking happens any time the driver is off the throttle. The compression of the engine slows the car. That's what's happening when you use 2nd gear for going downhill.
The heel-toe blip is just to raise the RPM of the engine so that the rears won't compression-lock under heavy braking while downshifting. That upsets the car and it can break driveline bits like differentials if done habitually. Done properly the heel-toe downshift is not felt.
I guess this is only done to slow down adequately and take off like a monster around a corner? But in real life I guess there is no need for that as most of the times you'll be coming to a stand still...not a blitzing corner
@MrTopStarr I The goal here is to rev the engine in order that the natural engine braking do not load too much the front tires (back lift) before turn in. If you are applying a strong braking it is usually not required to do that if you need more than 1 downshift. Cheers ;-)
@whiteynator I'm not sure now, I thought everything was perfectly synced but in older manual setups it was used to sync up the clutch and plate. (I believe, someone may have better info as I am going off of old memories)
a good way to try this is just rev matching without brakign say on the highway from 6th to 5h. Push in the clutch, blip the gas and select your gear. Hope this helps! Once you get it its second nature.
@bobscanfly you mean with clutch fanning? that not double clutching ya know. Here it is double clutch is when you shift neutral rev then shift into gear, like rev matching on a downshift but on an upshift. Do ya get it know? Its like people calling a powerslide a drift.
@dopesick187 they used to double clutch because transmission did not have synchros back in the days...but it's kinda pointless to do that now. transmissions nowadays are way advance...i still like working on manual trans. than auto..too much gears and clutch packs to deal with unlike manual where it's straight shot!! i'm hoping to rebuild mine with straight gears in the future instead of the helicals they have
@dopesick187 Incorrect, sir. A double clutch does not need a rev match to be considered a double clutch. Also, it's considered a double clutch whether you use your clutch to get to neutral or not. Another thing, you can double clutch upshift or double clutch downshift. Either way is considered a double clutch. :)
@EASiedlecki youre right it doesnt need a rev match. I wont go into any further explanations in DC Upshifting but thats redonkdalous:) Not needed if you have fast feet and a well tuned engine. bobscanfly is right only for unsynchroed clutch from way back when
@bobscanfly i don't think he double clutch... he just didn't release the clutch all the way right away..... there is no reason for him to double clutch at all
@fookfocketyfookfook see how at 0:12 his left foot pushes the clutch in then out then in once more? That woule be a double clutch, you know because he pushed in twice. Not trying to be an ass but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to shifting techniques and i could see that haha
@hetisover Don't worry man i use to wonder also. It is reving. when you shift the time your foot is off the gas and on the clutch your rpm's drop hittinghte gas pedal brings your revs back up so you can come out of a turn faster. if you can master this you'll take corners like a pro
@hetisover It's about rev matching. When you downshift a car, to keep maximum torque and HP to the wheels, you want to match revs with the previous gear. Really, you do the same thing when you up shift, you just generally don't have to hit the brakes at the same time.
When this is done incorrectly, it can cause all kinds of issues, like wheel hop in to the corner.
@boogieboxxxbboy If you stop in neutral, there's no point in doing it as that's more a double clutch technique. And you should never heel toe into 1st either. You can leave your foot on the clutch but that also defeats the purpose. It's to rev match to the direct gear below, into it's power zone higher in the RPM level, to USE that next gear. Going down more than one gear defeats the purpose of heel and toeing into the next lower gear. You would go let the clutch out, and match again then shift
Do you have keep the clutch depressed for executing this technique for more than one gear? (Ex. 5th to 4th to 3rd etc, etc) or do you let the clutch go after you do it for each gear?
You can just keep it down if you're going, say, from 5th to 3rd, but you will need a bigger "blip" since you're moving down more. Make sure your speed is appropriate for the lower gear (obviously), or you will push the engine over redline.
In a regular gearbox, there is no rule saying you have to go sequentially through each gear. You can skip gears if the situation calls for it.
oh ook, but i dont understand the bit when you said your clutch wont last long, how badly does it affect the clutch if you dont do the heel bit correctly?
@kiptheparonite thats only really acceptable in a car that has abs but like you said if your racing, the abs will have more than likely been disabled....and thats where heel-toe shifting becomes really difficult, when u have to learn how to slow the car down without any sudden movements that might lock the brakes up
people don't expect your normal cars to rev that fast.... you need a lightweight flywheel to wrap that quickly... you might have to double gas to get the same effect in a normal car...
Ooooh, =), Thanks, i just noticed and remembered that I was going like 10 mph in an EVO, when I shifted into second!!! I was scared since it shook so violently and felt like if the car was gonna break into a thosand pieces, that's why I just kept driving in 1st after that happend.=P luckily my friends didn't see what happend. I can't wait till I drive like the guy in this video.=)
Hey guys I have a question that's not really relavent with this technique, so please don't get mad, please help me.=). Im 16, I've driven a couple manual cars. But yesterday my friend let me drive his Evo 8 and when I started into 1st it started bucking on me so I slowed down and tried to accelerate again and the bucking got worst!!! Anybody know why? Please help im a noob!!
@boogieboxxxbboy the car was about to stall out thats why ... you were like the maximal borderline right before stalling but had enough of a roll or throttle to keep the engine alive.. its happend to me when im not paying attention
@boogieboxxxbboy the evo 8 has a staged clutch in it just as the sti and viper and other higher performance cars do... you are probably jsut use to the "Deep" dlutches of normal cars with huge "engage points" the "engage point" of an evo or something like that is about 1/6th the size of normal cars. just practice
@larigopsolis Gas should be level with a brake pedal which is depressed at maximum braking force, then blip the throttle while maintaining max braking and perform it.
He dbl clutchd to move two gears down i gess since he revd abit highr on dat shift, bt im no xpert lol

@whiteynator I'm not sure now, I thought everything was perfectly synced but in older manual setups it was used to sync up the clutch and plate. (I believe, someone may have better info as I am going off of old memories)

@CRX7510 - Threshold braking. Never lock up the wheels.
superpimp8000 1 year ago
how the eff does he do that so fast? tutorial needed....
kirby7979 1 year ago
@kirby7979
1.) Push in the brake
2.) Push in the clutch
3.) blip the gas pedal and select the gear
a good way to try this is just rev matching without brakign say on the highway from 6th to 5h. Push in the clutch, blip the gas and select your gear. Hope this helps! Once you get it its second nature.

0:12 heel-toe WITH a DOUBLE CLUTCH!!!! C-C-C-C-C-COMBO!!!!!
bobscanfly 1 year ago 166
@bobscanfly you mean with clutch fanning? that not double clutching ya know. Here it is double clutch is when you shift neutral rev then shift into gear, like rev matching on a downshift but on an upshift. Do ya get it know? Its like people calling a powerslide a drift.
dopesick187 1 year ago
@dopesick187 they used to double clutch because transmission did not have synchros back in the days...but it's kinda pointless to do that now. transmissions nowadays are way advance...i still like working on manual trans. than auto..too much gears and clutch packs to deal with unlike manual where it's straight shot!! i'm hoping to rebuild mine with straight gears in the future instead of the helicals they have
bobscanfly 1 year ago
@dopesick187 Incorrect, sir. A double clutch does not need a rev match to be considered a double clutch. Also, it's considered a double clutch whether you use your clutch to get to neutral or not. Another thing, you can double clutch upshift or double clutch downshift. Either way is considered a double clutch. :)
EASiedlecki 1 year ago
@EASiedlecki youre right it doesnt need a rev match. I wont go into any further explanations in DC Upshifting but thats redonkdalous:) Not needed if you have fast feet and a well tuned engine. bobscanfly is right only for unsynchroed clutch from way back when

fookfocketyfookfook 8 months ago
@fookfocketyfookfook see how at 0:12 his left foot pushes the clutch in then out then in once more? That woule be a double clutch, you know because he pushed in twice. Not trying to be an ass but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to shifting techniques and i could see that haha

orang3c4rt 1 year ago
why do you push the throttle when you've pushed in the clutch pedal. thats just revving, or im I being stupid?
hetisover 1 year ago
@hetisover Don't worry man i use to wonder also. It is reving. when you shift the time your foot is off the gas and on the clutch your rpm's drop hittinghte gas pedal brings your revs back up so you can come out of a turn faster. if you can master this you'll take corners like a pro
jake5344 1 year ago
@hetisover It's about rev matching. When you downshift a car, to keep maximum torque and HP to the wheels, you want to match revs with the previous gear. Really, you do the same thing when you up shift, you just generally don't have to hit the brakes at the same time.
When this is done incorrectly, it can cause all kinds of issues, like wheel hop in to the corner.

@skirton22s oh ok thanks, and do you know if you can perform this technique from neutral?
boogieboxxxbboy 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy If you stop in neutral, there's no point in doing it as that's more a double clutch technique. And you should never heel toe into 1st either. You can leave your foot on the clutch but that also defeats the purpose. It's to rev match to the direct gear below, into it's power zone higher in the RPM level, to USE that next gear. Going down more than one gear defeats the purpose of heel and toeing into the next lower gear. You would go let the clutch out, and match again then shift
falloutdude222 1 year ago
Do you have keep the clutch depressed for executing this technique for more than one gear? (Ex. 5th to 4th to 3rd etc, etc) or do you let the clutch go after you do it for each gear?
boogieboxxxbboy 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy let it go each time/gear
skirton22s 1 year ago
Comment removed
skirton22s 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy

This is really cool :]
Can this be useful on just regular road driving or just racing?
(I'm not driving a manual yet.. but I want to soon.)
Also.. when he steps on the gas on the second heel/toe demonstration..
I feel like he's stepping on my balls.

so when you brake, with the downshifts you tap the accelerator with the heel of your left foot? sorry i dont get it, youtubers please educate me
beyblader10171 1 year ago
@beyblader10171 you rev the engine to match rpms when engaging the clutch to downshift. other wise your clutch wont last very long
mojo323 1 year ago
@mojo323
oh ook, but i dont understand the bit when you said your clutch wont last long, how badly does it affect the clutch if you dont do the heel bit correctly?
beyblader10171 1 year ago
sick!!
carlos4thcalderon 1 year ago
@kiptheparonite thats only really acceptable in a car that has abs but like you said if your racing, the abs will have more than likely been disabled....and thats where heel-toe shifting becomes really difficult, when u have to learn how to slow the car down without any sudden movements that might lock the brakes up

people don't expect your normal cars to rev that fast.... you need a lightweight flywheel to wrap that quickly... you might have to double gas to get the same effect in a normal car...
Brohankutanks 1 year ago
When you do that, don't you automaticlly press your brake harder?
D12eams 1 year ago
Ooooh, =), Thanks, i just noticed and remembered that I was going like 10 mph in an EVO, when I shifted into second!!! I was scared since it shook so violently and felt like if the car was gonna break into a thosand pieces, that's why I just kept driving in 1st after that happend.=P luckily my friends didn't see what happend. I can't wait till I drive like the guy in this video.=)
boogieboxxxbboy 1 year ago
Hey guys I have a question that's not really relavent with this technique, so please don't get mad, please help me.=). Im 16, I've driven a couple manual cars. But yesterday my friend let me drive his Evo 8 and when I started into 1st it started bucking on me so I slowed down and tried to accelerate again and the bucking got worst!!! Anybody know why? Please help im a noob!!
boogieboxxxbboy 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy By bucking you mean like Choking?
Bad use of Clutch + Trottle, probably.
VanTheManSLB 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy the car was about to stall out thats why ... you were like the maximal borderline right before stalling but had enough of a roll or throttle to keep the engine alive.. its happend to me when im not paying attention
BigBerthaProject 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy the "bucking" is when you dont have enough power, your shifting is wrong, your shifting too early.
GauravA42 1 year ago
@boogieboxxxbboy the evo 8 has a staged clutch in it just as the sti and viper and other higher performance cars do... you are probably jsut use to the "Deep" dlutches of normal cars with huge "engage points" the "engage point" of an evo or something like that is about 1/6th the size of normal cars. just practice
Brohankutanks 1 year ago
Nice 8D
VanTheManSLB 1 year ago
i tried to do it in my rallye but i failed misserably cause my gas pedal is 5cm deeper than my brake :/
larigopsolis 1 year ago
@larigopsolis Gas should be level with a brake pedal which is depressed at maximum braking force, then blip the throttle while maintaining max braking and perform it.
