really...why is it knights wore plate armor and HELMETS, but the practice was abandoned once cannon hit the scene?! seems like they should have viewed helmets as a military tradition worth keeping o.o
no the main reson they abandon the helmets and armor plating is because of new higher velosity wepons (rifles) because people started to make a newer and better wepons on the feild of battle :)
The full helmets ruined their aim, they still wore these metal versions of straw hats, and the Parliamentary soldiers wore metal caps with breastplates.
In response to amigops post. No it is not our bloodiest war. We lost a lot more men in WW1 and 2- but that could be counted as British losses as opposed to English losses.
However, it is probably the bloodiest war fought on English soil.
Fair point but if you think about the differences in the population size. You can argue that the English Civil war did loose as many men as the WW1 and WW2. As obivously the population size during those times was alot smaller than today.
Good point. But again, WW1 and 2 were British casualties as opposed to just English (Then again the English civil war did take place in part in Scotland, Wales and Ireland)
Hey fellow reenactors..I do American Civil war reenacting (in Caifornia of all places) but thank you for trying to preserve a fascinating part of your history, just as we are doing across the pond. just a few questions though. Is the food at an English Civil war reenactment just as bad as it is at our events? (hard tack and salt pork-yuck) And is there rampant politics in your hobby as there is with ours?...Best wishes
England has had at least six major civil wars, and that's not even including the ones before 1066, or the Jacobite revolts after 1707. For some reason, this (1642-51) is the only one called 'The' Civil War.
Fricasso79- thats a good point. The Wars of the Roses (1459-1487) were really a civil war as well- I believe Shakespeare coined the term although many emblens were actually used.
The British Isles has indeed had a very bloody history- in fact it was considered to be 'The Balkans of the Seventeenth Century' The First English Civil War (1642-1645) was the best known of a series of conflicts known as The Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Some of the most intense fighting took place in the English Midlands. The underlying basis of the war was the stuggle between king and parliament- hope that helps...
I made a slight mistake- the first civil war arguably ended in 1647 with the fall of Harlech Castle in Gwynedd, Wales- though most pitched battles had ended in early 1646.
nicely done, but im always dissapointed at the cannon calabire at these things, never above wasit height, its like a 2 or 4 pounder. Id love to see a 12 pounder fire....
I'm a member of the sealed knot. I'm in the regiment of Sir Gervase Lucas. Belvoir Cormarants! (Royalist) This weekend was my first major muster, over 1,000 soldiers taking part! It was an imense battle each day, and many major injuries sadly. Some people do push the health and safety laws. I'm glad someone has uploaded a video on here, it's great too see from this point off view!
great vid - think it was shot on the Sunday(?) and shows a Parlimentary cannon firing at the Royalist army at the start of the battle, followed by the engagement of the opposing musket blocks and ends with the Royalist pike advancing, those in 'white coats' (who end up just left of centre) are the Marquess of Newcastles Regimente of Foote
Hi this was filmed on Saturday 5th May. I have never been to one of these events and it was fantastic. Actually being there is 1000 times better, but its nice to get an idea from the video.
I really love the uniforms in this period, especially the Ironsides' leather coats

I've heard that the Civil Wars were the bloodiest wars in English history and people re- enact them so that something like this doesn't happen again

the English civil war lasted from 1642 to 1651, but it was fought over two conflicts: 42'-46' then 48'-51'.
