    if at some psychic level Elgar sensed the

    coming 1st world war and his world changing.

  • @lewars1912 Personally I think it amiss to try to find political messages or "paintings" of actual feelings, objects or events in classical music, unless the composer specifically stated what the music is supposed to represent (like with Beethoven's 6th).

    For some reason most people insist on doing this as they seem unable to accept that music can just exist for its own sake.

    As I was listening to this I was thinking of a battlefield, but of course really the music just represents itself.

  • @RWT683 There's no harm in wondering about what may have influenced Elgar in

    writing this movement. I've never thought of a battlefield, however I do sometimes think of a camel having sex with a giraffe in the antarctic.
