@priest008: I believe that there may be other interpretations to this passage in the Bible too. Peter was the leader (bishop) of the people of Jerusalem, thus the bishop of Jerusalem, not Rome, should be the pope.

It was a principle from very early in the church not to "poach" bishops from smaller less prestigious cities. Peter went to Rome as a prisoner, not a free man - if he went there at all. There are no extra-Biblical proof of that anyway.
