The Rockets were nearly as good as the Lakers without Yao Ming... Which is what they proved when they beat the Lakers to win 22 games in a row last season. Shane Battier gave Kobe Bryant one of his worst-shooting games of the season.
Now you add Yao Ming, Ron Artest and Brent Barry to the mix. For the Lakers, you're merely adding Andrew Bynum...
If both teams are healthy, I think the Rockets are definitely better than the Lakers.
Just my opinion, of course...

The Rockets now have two of the best defenders in the NBA with Ron Artest and Shane Battier. Both of them can play man-to-man defense against the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Paul Pierce, etc... etc...
Now all of a sudden, Tracy McGrady doesn't even have to play defense. He can save his energy for the offensive end.
What Rockets need to do is limit the minutes of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady in the regular season, in hopes that both of them are healthy in the playoffs.
