Why would a business invest and hire workers to produce goods that... no one will consume. I agree we need a higher savings rate... I think about 12% would do the trick; but Schiff goes to far in demonizing all consumption and consumers- a balance needs to be struck.

can anyone explain @ 1.44 Peter says " and start saving,'coz only when consumers start saving can business start investing and start hiring "
Why does it follow that if people save, business'? will invest ? thx
as i side note schiff will be a regular on fast money twice a week tuesday and thursday from 5pm EST THIS IS GREAT NEWS;;;and my fast money is that ratrings on these shows will explode...it's a smart move by CNBC and well deserved for Schiff. If only they had done it sooner!
The theory goes, if people save, the banks will have more liquidity to be able to lend to businesses, who can in turn invest in capital, which in turn should improve the performance of the business. Businesses then grow, hire more people and expand. Theoretically that's how it should work, though I suspect that higher savings would be best placed in local banks rather than the casino banks that are closely linked to the Fed.
But all banks are effectively 'casino banks' because of the imposed paradigm of central banking, which expands credit thus inducing unwarranted production where that fiat money goes; from that initiation of malinvestment banks can either continue to paper over malinvestments tied to their assets, fuelling speculative booms. This means that all banks tend to accumulate toxic assets following increases in the money supply. They will all fail with central banking and unsound money.
You are of course right, the whole system is predicated upon the notion of a falsehood that a planned, central banking economy is one which is sustainable in the long term. Ultimately the systemic problems will only be resolved with actual collapse of the system and a more preferable system will be predicated upon the creation of a more mathematically perfect economy; many would argue that this is the genuine free market.
Obviously part of that analysis is that FRB is led to inflate and thus sustain gluts that must clear when central banks hold rates artificially low causing depletion of loanable funds from saving while fiat loans are simultaneously created with those low rates. In this way the arbiters of the lengthy boom bring themselves down under their own toxicity.
@britishjohn04 Saving bank notes only causes those interest bearing contracts to perpetuate the outstanding debt. Money (commercial paper) is made to be spent. If you want to hold capital, do so with commodities that are easy to traffic in the future. WATER is a great commodity, and talk about liquidity, everybody needs water.
I am a Peter Schiff fan. I watched a summary of the debate. He made great points as you would expect but he needs to improve his body language. He moved his head too much and rocked his body from side to side when he spoke. Silly stuff, I know, but he is trying to win a popularity contest and silly stuff matters in those.

Our entire country is a collusion of bought and paid for bureaucrats, main stream media and the black hand of big business that doesn't want to be exposed.

Peter, I've been thinking lately about current US monetary policies slowly painting the nation into a protectionist economy. For mere survival if nothing more. I'd like to hear your thoughts on protectionism, not is it good or bad, I'm guessing that your position would be it's bad, but more on the possibility that we could end up using tariffs as a last ditch effort for government to "create jobs" after their reckless policies destroy our economies self healing ability.
Without businesses the people would be unemployed, or self-employed like the North Koreans scraping the dirt for worms to put on the table.
Peter Schiff is more appealing to someone who actually has money - because those who don't have money don't have anything to loose and might not care of gold goes to $1million/ounce. If you don't own any gold then it makes no difference.
@nmreich By favouring business over people, this causes poverty in most situations (not all) so more people are encouraged to be unhelpful, to use their skills to help those who are equally poor, rather than be in a larger innovative capitalistic market.
Peter is worried about the economy in general. If we don't fix the economy in general, there won't be a USA anymore! He doesn't favor business people. He favors a free market and equal opportunity. I don't think you know Peter very well.
@Marniespeaks Thats socialism your talking just like the democrats that brainwash americans on tv. We've always been wage slaves, running on the hamster wheel alongside millions. Peter emphasizes the free market, which includes business, you should research peters motives before you start talkin shit like you kno it all. As long as we have the federal reserve and big government we will always be slaves. Get rid of world bank and imf too.
@drummer4life534 You've never seen socialism before, most Americans look at fascism and call it socialism. When a group of people keep helping each other with equally high priority than individual benefits (capitalism) that's socialism. When all the wealth goes to just one person, organization & their buddies, that's not socialism. Never has been or can be. Ever. Corporate-middlemen makes that action become de facto Mussolini Fascism as per his blueprints.
ever been to ukraine for 3 years? doubt it. America doesnt have real capitalism. its all cronied out. socialismn fascism communism similar just different degree's of intervening from government they're all monetaryism. were all brainwashed to think that currency and money is the only motive to new ideas and solutions, the only incentive to move forward. To get things done. We need a new system globally because this experiment has terrible conclusions ahead.
I want to remind people that in rural areas of China workers make about $750 a year - no running water no electricity & that's only 2 hours from Beijing. In the urban area it's $2500 a year - No health care no labor or pollution protections - if you get busted for bad business you're executed
Even if you are a CEO in China you live in a crappy cheaply built house owned by the state as well as your car & clothes. Most of the buildings you saw during the Olympics are empty - it's all show!
There are all kinds of charity and help agencies in the USA to help poor people and opportunity. You can't compare China with the USA. A free society and free market is how you get the most people doing well and the most people giving to those that are in a bind. Check out how much some of the so-called RICH UNCARING CAPITALISTS are giving to charity. Many giving millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars. And if the Gov cut some programs, new charities would spring up.
you only get back about 30 % of the money, so that lame comeback doesn't work. It sounds good, but doesn't add up. You just have a problem with people making money, but those people create and sustain the companies that employ many people in the USA. Please, keep coming up with more lame excuses that sound good in your head, but in reality are complete BS.
You are the one that wants the power brokers and our gov to have all the power while everyone else is an equal peasant. There are also idiots born every minute like you that don't want a guy in the senate like Peter Schiff that would actually really change things for the better and make our fucking gov follow the fucking law. Bui maybe you think all of the fucking criminals our in our corporations and all of our gov officials are mister goody two shoes!
Rand Paul has double digit leads in polls against his Republican opponent. And double digit leads against each remaining democratic candidate. His will win and go to the senate unless he screws it up. There is a guy from california that just won the Republican primary from the INcumbent Republican that probably will win a house seat. Peter could win. is starting to make the rounds in person around Conn and people like him. He has absolutely no fear is discussing any topic. Candid.
States have started to use nulification. Several states have said that if the Obamacare bill passes, the states will void it and also go after the constitutionality of some states having special deals. The tide is turning. More liberty candidates are winning. The more that win, the more will win in the future, because they are teaching others how our country is really supposed to be run.
The dollar may crash before we stop the massive spending though!
Peter Schiff has stated countless times that he would NOT have bailed ANY of the banks out. NONE!!! If we ran things Peter's way, much of your criminal corporation pool would be out of business. But that probably still wouldn't get you to actually consider his points of view.
@He101A --Only if youre investing in gold. But when the dollar is worthless, what are you going to do, buy a loaf of bread with a gold bar? The country is rapidly increasing its debt and if that isnt stopped soon, chaos will quickly manifest. Economics 101--spend more than you make or more than youre worth and you go broke. We are screwed.
"Yet Blumenthal isnt running just against Alpert. He is also running against Rob Simmons and Linda McMahon. It appears as if he has given bait to Simmons and Simmons has take the bait and ran with it" Orient Lodge commentary.
I like your ideas Mr. Schiff and I would vote for you if I lived in Connecticut, but, and don't take this the wrong way, but this hurts Ron Paul too...the way you speak is sort of hard to listen to sometimes. Obviously its ideas that matter, which is why Ron Paul does so well despite the way he speaks, but, I don't mean to be so critical because you have more public speaking experience than me, but just something to think about (if you read this comment and you haven't thought of it yet).
Democrats and Republicans both have ruined this country. The only real Americans in government these days are libertarians. And I can probably count them all on one hand.
Peter is wrong on education. What America needs desperately is EDUCATION!
You Americans esp. Tea Party members need more education on natural sciences. (climate change deniers, evolution deniers etc.)
I am with Peter on much of his economics talk but here he fails. If the GOP makes Palin (CREATIONIST) a candidate America will go down the drain. She is even worse than Ronald Reagan.
Your logic is wrong(more government = more education). Look for Stossel episode on education. It's great and you will learn ;) a lot.
And I don't like Palin, but i have no problem with her creationism. I dislike her because she is a dumb war monger. She can talk populist BS, but Ron Paul and Schiff are the only real republicans.
you are making some pretty big assumptions - let's see where you get your evidence for what you are claiming. Also, what does a belief in creationism or macroevolution have to do with government? How is she worse than Reagan? What are you talking about? I don't care about Palin one way or another but I don't throw around unbacked opinions in comment threads either.
Government does not need to provide mandatory education institutional child detention centers either.
Yes, we need quality education, which means let schooling be done by the private sector and get government completely out of it. I would be terrified to put my kid into a public school and rather give my career up to homeschool my children if it came down to it.
Also, if you believe in man made global warming (oh, excuse me "climate change") I am pretty sure you need a little more education or at least you need to develop a better ability to reckognize deceipt and propaganda.
Being a physicist I think I understand enough to decide it is science and not propaganda. But the WWF should not contribute to much nonsense to IPCC reports.
But having some numbers wrong in one section does not invalidate the science behind it. We had climate scientist in the 90ties in Göttingen who described already what to do.
It´s so obvious you americans and we europeans consume to much oil. There will be none left for other generations. That´s immoral in many ways.
You don't have to be a climetologist to see through the lies we were fed by the IPCC. You just need some good old common sense. The leaked e-mails give you a pretty good idea what methods they used to force their cooked-up ideas on us. By now it should be obvious to everyone that man made global warming was made up. Hell, the very people pushing this agenda has changed their marketing strategy and not it's "climate change". But I won't argue any further, you can believe whatever you like.
@0oHIZAKIo0 YES somebody gets it! all you have to do is follow the fake fiat currency trail and you will get to the truth every time, same thing with "health care reform" and "student loan reform" its all a power grab.
CO2 LAGS increases in earth temperature. This is completely opposed to the so called "climate change" preposition. Local communities can be much, much better at deciding how best to teach our kids than a bunch of ego-maniacs in DC. DC has the highest per student money expediture in the country and is one of the worst preforming. FACT.
Climate has been changning since the earth began. Greenland used to actually be green!!
Data shows that the earth's temperature increased and then after a few years CO2 levels rose. And the opposite also happened, the earth's temperature decreased and after several years, the
CO2 level decreased. This means that people's additional production of CO2 does NOT cause an increase in the earth's temperature. Something other that CO2 is raising and lowering the earth's temperature. This same pattern has occurred many times this century.
am sorry Peter shiff but what i have been seeing is there plan is to bankerupt the usa and the world and like u have said let em all fail cause they need to regulate them selves cause what ever u do they will find another way to scam us all to pay 4 there mistakes if they r mistacks i truly hope u get in dc to be the vioce of a rational mind that there dosent seem to be in the usa goverment and maybe they will let u run what they cant but u tell em how stupid there agenda really is
Peter, thanks for going on Phil Grande's show, he like yourself have been doing a great job of calling what's been going on over the last 4 years. Look forward to hearing you there again. Thank s again!
Peter won the courant poll by about 5%. His ending statement was fantastic, and his enthusiasm immediately carried over into the crowd, who cheered as soon as he was finished with his statement.
Truly uplifting to see that Peter's straight-shooting, common sense appeal has made its impression.
as long as there is tarp money....freddie ,fannie and aig will find reasons to get some more......As far as the dollar is concerned...the fed is making all the right moves....yes creditors are nervous in europe....that is why money is flowing into the US market ,gold and dollar.....regardless of whether the economy is recovering or not....
I don't know there IWash. You know I've been short the USD for the past 4-5 weeks approx. As of right now everything is green at my end, and wrt the short vs the CAD, the profits are ridiculously juicy. It seems to me that your long dollar/short Gold trade is starting to come unglued. For those buy and holders of gold shares they're still treading water from 2006-7, but the traders have been eating up the waves.
I think the dollar and gold can both go up together now ....since the fed signaled they will not allow inflation....gold will get new buyers from europ and asia fleeing their markets but not wanting the dollar or U S stocks...the IMF is willing to sell it to the non beleivers....
Hmm, you didn't like gold and said it was going down back when it was 1080, but now you say (a few weeks later) that all of a sudden it can go up now. You sound like a Cramerican. Also, who are these foreign investors fleeing europe and asia? I mean, I am one of those 'foreign types', and I don't see any fleeing going on. All I see is a decade-long declining dollar and under-performing US stocks, and I generally don't flee towards the fire...lol.
For that matter, Iwash, you don't even need to look any further than your neighbor to the north. Look at their market compared to the US. The returns both nominally and vs gold/cad/usd whatever, outstrip the US returns by a very wide margin. For the record, and to keep you up to date, I have trimmed some of my precious metals and currency positions over the last couple of days. Gotta book those profits while keeping the rest still in play.
By the way, McMahon's people are trying to run up the debate poll on the Courant, what do you say we give them a run for their money and keep Peter at the top? :)
I really like Peter (I donated to his campaign), but he did not properly address the question regarding providing **specific examples** of ways to create jobs in the debate video. I would have really liked to hear his specific ideas.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Peter Schiff is great at blowing trash talk out his ass with his predetermined one dumbass libertarina answer for everything. He's not worth shit with any real solutions.
How do you figure? Do you have a better idea? Were you able to predict the finacial crisis and offer solutions for it's problems, or are you just another troll looking to score cheap jabs at someone who politcally makes you uncomfortable?
Peter said: less regulation and government=more private sector jobs. You may think that he needs to say we need more jobs in the sector X(eg. nuclear sector), but Peter doesn't believes that politicians should be deciding what is the most efficient way for society to be productive. He is a believer in free markets. It may sound less cool than "we will preserve insurance jobs" but it it is the best way.
No, I was not suggesting that he focus on a certain sector in which to create jobs. I wished Peter would have given specific examples of issues he would tackle to achieve "less regulation" and "less govt." Change doesn't happen in one broad sweep, it happens issue by issue. McMahon talked specifically about the payroll tax and its burden on business and that's one issue she'd work on. I just wanted to hear where Peter would start.
First of all(again) to quote Peter:"tax cuts without cutting spending are meaningless"
Now on specific solutions: cutting welfare programs, eliminating department of energy... cutting military spending(like bases in Germany( WTF-is Poland a great threat to USA ;))) and mostt important thing: blocking the new debt ceiling increase. You can his videos on ctschiffsupporter page for more info about his solutions.BTW I agree that he should have said more but it hard to do it in 2 min...
It's utterly outrageous that Barney 'The Mumbling Pig' Frank STILL has a powerful position...instead of being in prison(or a trough) where he belongs.
Bunning was correct to object for the unemployment extension bill with other wish lists from special interests. Unemployment insurance backed by government.
Peter, I have been saving but lately I decided to throw out all my old clothes and prepare for the worst. I purchased a few nice tailored suits, sport coats, and american silver eagles. I know one thing. I may be poor but I will look great and get lots of pu***. haha
Am I the only person unable to view this video? I keep seeing the message "An error occured, please try again later" -- all other videos are working...
Do it. Its going to be a tough fight with Mrs. McMahon. She sounds like a career politician with a human twist. These types of debates don't allow Peter to shine.
Peter thanks for your videos..You dont have to do them. But you choose to. Very well appreciated. Thank your dad for me while your at it..Very sad his situation but somehow very interesting...thanks again
The CRASH is coming, just a matter of time, if your smart informed educated and have a little commonsense, and properly understand history. You will know this is coming, cause and affect people ripple affect, oh yeah it's all coming, invest in lead guns ammo cash in hand gold in hand food water etc etc. Can we say bank holiday. The debate and opinions will all be over soon, only God can help us now. We are being lied to. Prepare people get ready the storm is coming!!! crash crash crash.
I love you Pete...but but Linda won that debate buddy but you did do very well and that didn't surprise me. Some of your responses seemed to long and drawn out.
You must remember Peter most people in this country are short and narrow minded and you have to keep those answers short and sweet.
But I wish you well in the race. NICE POST I enjoyed it as usual.
Go to the Courant and voter for Peter, lets show McMahon that all her money wont hide the fact she cant even speak. She was a complete joke and seemed totally clueless
I just looked at the Courant voting poll and McMahon is at 80% of the votes, which makes me nauseas. She sounds and acts like a politician: "I'm not here to be a politician ... but I want to be your senator for one or two terms ... put the smack down." LOL!
The government doesn't care about saving money or doing the "right thing". The public sector cares about pillaging as many resources from the private sector as they can get away with. Stop acting surprised at this.
For some reason I keep getting an error trying to play this video but I've watched some of the debate and so far Peter is doing a pretty good job. He's doing a good job of framing answers in economic terms even when the question is related to foreign policy, which is good because economics is his strong suit. The other two candidates are annoying. One tells "stories" about people she met. The other never fails to mention how much of a "war hero" he is. A little remniscent of McCain.
yeah sorry - the big players are moving into polish zloty and/or NOK these countries have very low debt and are doing well, they have avoided this crisis. i just think that gold and silver cant be relied upon totally as the market is known to be rigged, rothschild sets the daily gold price in london every day, it could easily drop 20% where as the chances of these currencys soing that are very very slim, i own silver also but i wouldnt put all my eggs n one basket.
Why would a business invest and hire workers to produce goods that... no one will consume. I agree we need a higher savings rate... I think about 12% would do the trick; but Schiff goes to far in demonizing all consumption and consumers- a balance needs to be struck.

Peter Schiff is more appealing to someone who actually has money - because those who don't have money don't have anything to loose and might not care of gold goes to $1million/ounce. If you don't own any gold then it makes no difference.
nmreich 2 years ago
you are nuts
how can you even separate people and business?
they need each other.
What we have in the US, outside the ignorance of your comment, is a mental disorder called greed.
marniespeaks 2 years ago
@nmreich By favouring business over people, this causes poverty in most situations (not all) so more people are encouraged to be unhelpful, to use their skills to help those who are equally poor, rather than be in a larger innovative capitalistic market.
ytgv3fc7 2 years ago
Peter is worried about the economy in general. If we don't fix the economy in general, there won't be a USA anymore! He doesn't favor business people. He favors a free market and equal opportunity. I don't think you know Peter very well.

As long as we have the federal reserve and big government we will always be slaves. Get rid of world bank and imf too.
drummer4life534 2 years ago
@drummer4life534 You've never seen socialism before, most Americans look at fascism and call it socialism. When a group of people keep helping each other with equally high priority than individual benefits (capitalism) that's socialism. When all the wealth goes to just one person, organization & their buddies, that's not socialism. Never has been or can be. Ever. Corporate-middlemen makes that action become de facto Mussolini Fascism as per his blueprints.

Most of the buildings you saw during the Olympics are empty - it's all show!
marniespeaks 2 years ago
There are all kinds of charity and help agencies in the USA to help poor people and opportunity. You can't compare China with the USA. A free society and free market is how you get the most people doing well and the most people giving to those that are in a bind. Check out how much some of the so-called RICH UNCARING CAPITALISTS are giving to charity. Many giving millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars. And if the Gov cut some programs, new charities would spring up.

The dollar may crash before we stop the massive spending though!
blx2000 2 years ago
Peter Schiff has stated countless times that he would NOT have bailed ANY of the banks out. NONE!!! If we ran things Peter's way, much of your criminal corporation pool would be out of business. But that probably still wouldn't get you to actually consider his points of view.

@He101A --Only if youre investing in gold. But when the dollar is worthless, what are you going to do, buy a loaf of bread with a gold bar? We are screwed.

She is even worse than Ronald Reagan.
wkr from europe.
pcuimac 2 years ago
@pcuimac Palin is not electable.
vivaloriflamme 2 years ago
Your logic is wrong(more government = more education). Look for Stossel episode on education. It's great and you will learn ;) a lot.
And I don't like Palin, but i have no problem with her creationism. I dislike her because she is a dumb war monger. She can talk populist BS, but Ron Paul and Schiff are the only real republicans.
Voy2378 2 years ago
@pcuimac
you are making some pretty big assumptions - let's see where you get your evidence for what you are claiming. Also, what does a belief in creationism or macroevolution have to do with government? How is she worse than Reagan? What are you talking about? I don't care about Palin one way or another but I don't throw around unbacked opinions in comment threads either.
Government does not need to provide mandatory education institutional child detention centers either.
n66178 2 years ago
@pcuimac
0oHIZAKIo0 2 years ago
Being a physicist I think I understand enough to decide it is science and not propaganda. But the WWF should not contribute to much nonsense to IPCC reports.
But having some numbers wrong in one section does not invalidate the science behind it. We had climate scientist in the 90ties in Göttingen who described already what to do.
It´s so obvious you americans and we europeans consume to much oil. There will be none left for other generations. That´s immoral in many ways.
pcuimac 2 years ago
You don't have to be a climetologist to see through the lies we were fed by the IPCC. You just need some good old common sense. The leaked e-mails give you a pretty good idea what methods they used to force their cooked-up ideas on us. By now it should be obvious to everyone that man made global warming was made up. Hell, the very people pushing this agenda has changed their marketing strategy and not it's "climate change". But I won't argue any further, you can believe whatever you like.
0oHIZAKIo0 1 year ago
@0oHIZAKIo0 YES somebody gets it! all you have to do is follow the fake fiat currency trail and you will get to the truth every time, same thing with "health care reform" and "student loan reform" its all a power grab.
bearcats54321 1 year ago
There is scientific evidence that higher
CO2 LAGS increases in earth temperature. This is completely opposed to the so called "climate change" preposition. Local communities can be much, much better at deciding how best to teach our kids than a bunch of ego-maniacs in DC. DC has the highest per student money expediture in the country and is one of the worst preforming. FACT.
Climate has been changning since the earth began. Greenland used to actually be green!!
blx2000 2 years ago
did you know that the earth is in a C02 deficit?
Did you know that they have proven organic growth depends on c02?
did you know that earths history proves that high c02 causes plants to be in abundance.
videocruzer 2 years ago
Data shows that the earth's temperature increased and then after a few years CO2 levels rose. And the opposite also happened, the earth's temperature decreased and after several years, the
CO2 level decreased. This means that people's additional production of CO2 does NOT cause an increase in the earth's temperature. Something other that CO2 is raising and lowering the earth's temperature. This same pattern has occurred many times this century.

as long as there is tarp money....freddie ,fannie and aig will find reasons to get some more......As far as the dollar is concerned...the fed is making all the right moves....yes creditors are nervous in europe....that is why money is flowing into the US market ,gold and dollar.....regardless of whether the economy is recovering or not....
IWashMyOwnBrain 2 years ago
I don't know there IWash. You know I've been short the USD for the past 4-5 weeks approx. As of right now everything is green at my end, and wrt the short vs the CAD, the profits are ridiculously juicy. It seems to me that your long dollar/short Gold trade is starting to come unglued. For those buy and holders of gold shares they're still treading water from 2006-7, but the traders have been eating up the waves.
mcdonaldscalling21 2 years ago
I think the dollar and gold can both go up together now ....since the fed signaled they will not allow inflation....gold will get new buyers from europ and asia fleeing their markets but not wanting the dollar or U S stocks...the IMF is willing to sell it to the non beleivers....
IWashMyOwnBrain 2 years ago
Hmm, you didn't like gold and said it was going down back when it was 1080, but now you say (a few weeks later) that all of a sudden it can go up now. You sound like a Cramerican. Also, who are these foreign investors fleeing europe and asia? I mean, I am one of those 'foreign types', and I don't see any fleeing going on. All I see is a decade-long declining dollar and under-performing US stocks, and I generally don't flee towards the fire...lol.
mcdonaldscalling21 2 years ago
For that matter, Iwash, you don't even need to look any further than your neighbor to the north. Look at their market compared to the US. The returns both nominally and vs gold/cad/usd whatever, outstrip the US returns by a very wide margin. For the record, and to keep you up to date, I have trimmed some of my precious metals and currency positions over the last couple of days.
Voy2378 2 years ago 4
No, I was not suggesting that he focus on a certain sector in which to create jobs. I wished Peter would have given specific examples of issues he would tackle to achieve "less regulation" and "less govt." Change doesn't happen in one broad sweep, it happens issue by issue. McMahon talked specifically about the payroll tax and its burden on business and that's one issue she'd work on. I just wanted to hear where Peter would start.
srs6d 2 years ago
@srs6d:
