I've been so sad about the ending until I realised the title of the song is Small Happiness. then I realised that the ending is supposed to be happy. In the end, Hiroko got together with Akiba, the guy who loves her, not Fujii to whom she is just a shadow of his real love. Fujii (female) accepted the love (she kept the library card with the drawing) and found small joy in the fact that she was the one that Fujii really loved. She was happy in the end because her hopes against hopes were realised

Does she love him? She smiled at him and she smashed the vase when he went. Perhaps she liked him towards the end? The ending is so sad - why couldn't he come back to look for her and hitch up with her? Why like someone else who look similar? But then, you tell you, that's why it's beautiful.

I thought she smashed the vase because she was angry with him for not telling her he is leaving...she must have like him at the time....

The ending is not sad at all...they both helped each other to find peace within themselves.

I don´t know if a can help you, but if you don`t know the end of the movie, well the girls show to Itsuki (girl) a image that de other Itsuki (boy) drow, and it about was her, she knows then, that he always loved her, " Dear this is a letter that i will not send you" End :P
