  • God be with you Ireland

  • Is that Phil Coulter singing with Luke later in the song?

  • If I ever get the chance to meet Phil Coulter I want to congratulate him for writing this. I'm recording a version for an album this year.

  • Beautiful, well done Leinster

  • What album is this from? I can't find it anywhere.

  • luke will never die

  • Beautiful.

  • im 19, go to uni in derry and absolutely LOVE this song..

  • Kellyoneill i want to take this opportunity to thank you man...if not for you i would have died without knowing about luke and the truely great writer that phil is.Being from the states it wasnt untill i was in my 40's till i heard them here for first time.God bless you

  • @stevekon11 Thank you :) Your very welcome x

  • @stevekon11 what a wonderful thing to discover the velvet voice of the great luke kelly!!!!!

  • I was brought up in Portrush. I have in my lifetime visited Derry twice which I believe is the town the songs about and both times could not wait to leave it. The sadness in this song says it all, I think. I left Ulster never to return, I could never understand what people found to fight about in such a desolate country.

  • @inis im a protestant living in this city im am now 30 i have socalized 5 times in my life in the city centre,i feel it sad in 2010 in modern society that hatred remains as strong as ever,i have a 4 month baby boy,and i hope he wont have to go thru all this crap,i have say this is a wonderful song

  • @adamlil147 I wish you and your family well. I had a wonderful childhood living in Portrush, but once I left school I also left home never to return.

  • I love this man's voice....God bless you, Lukey...

  • "This is the origional song by Luke Kelly" ..... what???

The original song is wriiten by PHIL COULTER but then Luke released it....

".....but changed using modern technology to form a duet"....????

I dont really know what you mean by this........ this is a fantastic version of the song and most peoples favourite, but try but get your other facts right!

  • @twinkletoesIRL The Original song SUNG by Luke Kelly that Phil adapted using modern tecnology, Get MY facts right, re read the description and dont be so pedantic!

  • @kellyoneill fair enough we all make mistakes, it just so happened that the same day I read this I had just explained to my friend at school that it was Phil who wrote Congratulations..... she thought Cliff wrote it and that Twink wrote puppet on a string, I find it funny now but being a Eurovision fan I got irritated hehehe.... I wasnt being pedantic :)

  • @twinkletoesIRL Apologies for being a little abrupt,

I'm not usually, Rough day :( maybe I should make the description a little more clear :)

  • @kellyoneill that is not luke kelly singing thats red hurley get your facts right!

  • @karlzips1 Thats not Luke? Fool!

  • @kellyoneill I,M WINDING YOU UP LOL (SORRY X)

  • @kellyoneill I just disliked karlzips1's comment, first time I've ever put someone down, but it was pathetic.

  • the original is Phil Coulter (a Derry man like my father), Derry men and women ar very proud and with reason

  • @twinkletoesIRL Calm down lads, take in the tune !

  • Great version, Luke was an amazing man, I was fortunate to meet him several time on the Dubliners visits to Edinburgh.......still can hear his laugh,.whose round it was RIP Luke

  • It seems every song Luke sang was the definitive version. A true Legend.

  • Legend!

  • ja was ik :)

  • Live in Dommel

  • Love it. Thank you.

  • Sure, its Phil Coulters song, but by god, thats a hell of a version from the Legend. Immense.

  • Its so beautiful it could have made me cry but i held back if only luke and phil had actually recorded this one but you brought it to us thanks kelloneil you'v ebrought luke back from the dead for many of us.

  • This man is a legend among legends... keeo it up luke i know your singing from whereever ya are!!!

  • this is Phil Coulter's song, but Luke's version is the definitive version along with many other songs he sung such as Raglan Road .... thats why he is an artist beyond compare and his voice in musical history will forever be in the present.

  • well gotta say that sounds absolutely fantastic.

  • Great version, Luke Kelly was an amazing man, God rest his soul and long live the music of the amazing Dubliners. There will NEVER be another band like them.

    But a slight detail change....

This is Phil Coulter's song, not Luke's, despite many believing otherwise. I would humbly suggest changing the details to reflect such. But this has added a tone to this song that is hard to match. Excellent addition to Youtube! Many thanks!

  • im sure what kelly meant was the original version that lukey sang..:)

  • Hey kiddo :)

    where are ya lately????

  • Yeah, Phil wrote this, but he didn't publiciy record it himself till after Luke died, as far as I know, anyway.

  • Good job of adding to a fine vocal of a great song.

  • Luke is beyond compare. Phil Coulter writes great songs, but his performances are a bit soupy. I don't like synthesizers.

  • Simply beautiful , Perfection

  • Never tire of listening to this song. I've been singing it myself for seven or eight years. It was the first ballad I learned.

  • Jealousy is a terrible thing!

  • What a song. Its a song I can relate to as I grew up in the height of the troubles and remember how tight things were for my parents.I dont know what themaples36 said about luke kelly,im maybe better not knowing! It takes a special kind of wanker to slag a legend like Luke. This is probably someone who thinks rap and r&b is music! Thanks for the post Kelly. You should check out the lonesome boatman by finbar furey.beautiful poem before some of the best whistle playing your ever likely to hear

  • He said ...

"if that man shouting this has a voice , i will start doing that around the bars, i will not insult the word singer , i will just say sad people made him think he was good at vocals, led him to think he was doing go,od , shit he wrecks songs , if you dont know a good singer type in derek mc cormack you tube, youll hear a singer , that bloke must stink, he lukes like he does" and then went on to say...

"great song shouted and destroyed by smelly man", deffo a special kinda wanker!

  • sorry, i replied to you in my husbands account by mistake :)

  • Is this guy completely fuckin tone deaf???does the fact that Phil Coulter chose him to sing his song not register with this asshole?Would love to hear him shout/sing on a saturday night. We should pity people like this, the fact they cant appreciate a talent like Luke Kelly is sad!

  • Why lots of Your Postings came up "Unavailable" - is this to do with performing rights issues or some darker conspiracy?

Too many to mention - was it temporary?

  • Which ones are unavailable?

Must just be a temporary thing,

I had a look in my account and they all still seem to be up.

  • @seanthegunner hey sean.. Luke Crowley's now playing with George and Eddie Furey as Finns's playing somewhere else! Still beautiful music mind!

  • "sad people made him think he was good at vocals," What a gobshite you are!

Thousands upon Thousands of people from ALL around the world will disagree, so take youe sorry little opinion and go and listen to seomthing else.

  • indescribable how this effects me. Makes me happy and sad at the same time. The song is of unparalleled beauty.

  • This song brought me to tears, thank you so much for sharing kellyoneill!

  • we played this at my dads funeral last year. there wasnt a dry eye in the church. cant listen to this song without bursting into tears

  • my dad used to sing this. he passed away. he used to sing it about cashel co tipperary.

  • Wonderful, contains one of the greatest lines I`ve ever heard in a song. Thanks.

  • AS a singer guitarist I played this many many times over the years and this great version

still makes the song sound like when i FIRST HEARD IT ALL THOSE YEARS AGO CAN i get a copy anywhere

  • if you send me your email address in a PM i can send it to you.

  • Is this version on any CDSs?

  • It will be on one of phil coulter's Cd'S not any of luke's.

Or i can send it via email to you.

  • Thanks.

  • what a tune by phill ! but luke kills it!!

  • Kills as in the same way that "Wicked" is used by younger people to mean "Brilliant" ?

  • Why does it say this song is by Luke Kelly? Hats off to the man, hes a legend, but Phil Coulter wrote it. A Derry man. Get your facts right.

  • The title doesn't imply that luke wrote it,

the title simply states who is singing the song,

which is Luke Kelly AND Phill Coulter.

    so get your facts right!!!!!

  • Hey GeneGenie89, I thought it was Rosie Odonell. The song talks about the Gas .... Wall, right? Oh well, must have been Phil like you said.

  • he sung it better than Phil Coulter

    Legendary ! ! !

  • I'll never get enough of this music.

  • what has this song to make tears flowing? And I am not Irish at all.

  • Your answer can be found in your question adremoid.

  • one of my biggest dublin memories this playing at pier 1 of dublin airport as i left magic!

  • A great musician and a great folk singer combined to make this song special.

  • As an Irish American, I'll never forget the songs my grandmother used to sing about her homeland. This was one of them...and she could never QUITE get through it without a tear. Thanks so much for adding this video; it brings back a lot of happy memories.

  • as a irish person i fell the same look up luke kelly come my little son

  • Many versions of this song - but I think that we all favour the version that we first heard, which, for me, was Luke Kelly's.

  • A bit late, but well done the Irish for telling Europe to stick their Lisbon treaty.

We'd do the same in Scotland but we don't get a vote.

  • what a legend, i dont know what to say only he makes me so proud to be irish....what a voice..here we go

  • Of all the versions of this beautiful song, I like this one best - although it is a close call between it and Paddy Reilly's version.

Derry - what did you do to deserve the British occupation and their wrecking of your lovely little city?

RIP the innocent 14 men and boys murdered by the Paratropp Regiment of the British Army as they went about their sadistic, evil, murderous binge in January 1972.

  • So sorry.

  • Sure you are

    Hmmph!

  • smileoutloud luke kelly isnt dead!!!!!!1

  • memorable and still tearjerking.

  • Brightens any day.. I can't recall hearing Luke half sing anything. Injects raw, raw passion, everytime. Makes you proud to be a Derry man. Proud to be Irish. Proud to even relate to the man. Thanks again Kelly.

  • one of irelands legends!! RIP!!

  • My Da always said God created the earth in 6 days & on the 7th he created Ireland & Luke Kelly Irelands best. I miss you Da, but if your in Heaven at least your in brilliant company.

  • Luke Kelly is the only singer who can make me laugh during one song and cry like a baby during the next. No other performer i can think of can do that. The man was a genius. This song is heartbreaking, but is also filled with hope for the future. RIP Luke.

  • its the eve of the old firm game and luke my man you have got me blood pumping

  • a tearjerker if your a chick but i aint a chick so this comment will hav 2 do....luke and his music ooooozis nutin but classss

  • I can say without equivocation that Luke Kelly Liam Clancy Tommy Makem Their voices wil live forever not only in Irish folk music..BUT wherever Folk music is sung/played There will be a Luke..Liam..Tommy

  • I have studied music, I can say without equivocation that Luke Kelly could connect to whoever he sang to better than ANY artist I have ever heard.

  • Coulter's trust in Luke's voice is evident. This song is a deeply personal one and Coulter brought it to Luke. Two greats, one masterful ballad.

  • I have studied music, I can say without equivocation that Luke Kelly could connect to whoever he sang to better than ANY artist I have ever heard.

  • Im not irish but I know the conflict this country's been going through...

I got to know this song at my school, where teacher introduced this one to our music-company. I got goose bumps cause I understood everword he sang, I nearly had tears in my eyes...

may it sounds untipically for a german, but thank you for this piece of good music-history... it's great

(our music-company is planning to make an irish-folk evening at our school, as I remmber it's going to be in september)

  • thats really cool man. glad to see people, especially younger ones like me, appreciating great music regardless of heritage and what not. cheers buddy.

  • Spot on!

  • legend...

  • Luke Kelly is one of the best if not the best singers that Dublin conjured. Rest In Peace Luke one day we'll have a session!!!

  • when you wake up in the morn and the old man is frying beacon and eggs and playing these songs you know your a son or daughter of a paddy...

  • haha thats great. i plan to be that old man someday. with my little kid running around smiling :] cant wait. long live luke and of course phil!

  • Classic observation...I can't count how many times I've explained to my Fiancee about my love for my Irish music...I'm only 35 and she's 28 and american thru n thru (not her fault)so she doesn't "dig" the vibe, But the memories of weekends waking up to this stuff is priceless and will always be treasured...the simplicity of the music is great, not overproduced like alot of the new stuff these days....anyways, cheers all...

    Sean

  • below me, get a life u bender

  • Mixed feelings about this. The magic, grit and power is there but I think Coulter is searching for too much retraint and a bit of the rawness is missing. Or maybe its just an age thing.
