Sonic Advance 1 is a great Mordern Sonic game and so is Sonic Advance 2, both of those games have a classic feel

This game basically takes off some time after Sonic and Knuckles, right? Nothing important happens in between?

Well, Sonic Advance doesn't really have an existing plot, but, yeah, I would assume it takes time after Sonic & Knuckles. Sonic has his somersault move, something which was only previously seen in Sonic Adventure, so it may take place after that too.
