Is not true that there is a european health system. First of all, the European Union executive (the Commission) does not manage healthcare. Is a member states issue. And we have a diversity of models: from mandatory private insurance in the Netherlands or Switzerland to single payer in Spain or UK. The Swiss don´t even have a national social security system (70% voted against it 2 years ago). We don´t have a european income tax either. So i find these comparisons a little silly.

In Holland (to name a country) a little house in a row (no garden, not free) cannot be get for less than 250.000 EUR. anywhere in the country! Most own a house. 1 liter of petrol is in Holland around 1,54 EUR. Everyone drives all over the place every day. A totally ordinary middle class, mid sized car costs 25.000+ Eur. Most families have 2 cars. Whatever they do .... it works.

Indeed. I think the US need some socialism, not so much to cause any harm, but enough to balance things out. They have gone too far to the right in many ways. That is one redeeming feature in european politics, we are more pragmatic. We compromise around things and borrow from different ideologies. We are more willing to do what it takes to solve problems. A nice side- effect is also that european politics tend to be less polarized than the american counterpart.
