  • Is there a video where I can solely watch the interview that these clips are taken from? If anyone knows?

  • I admire this woman so much. She's gorgeous.

  • It's the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar, not the end of the world. In traditional religions the end of the cycle is the time for cleansing and leaving untruths behind. Then the new cycle can be started spiritually fresh, clean and pure.

  • i havent seen, a more perfect woman, i dont think there could be a more perfect woman .

  • "If you know me so well, then tell me which hand I use"... :) Tori is sneaky. haha

  • I LOVE this clip. But does anyone know what song she's playing between 4:05 and 4:08?

  • @Succour L.A. Woman by The Doors I assume?

  • Hmm... if our girl here believes in the Mayan calendar, does she think the world will end next year? That would be awful. But then we wouldn't have to have a (US) Presidential election, which this exhausted sister of an activist who ran for Mayor would be fine and dandy with that :)

  • 7:30-8:00 - pretty much

  • i think a lot of women carry a big hole in there heart and a big question mark. If God is a he, then who represents us? who are we a reflection of? it cant be right.

  • It is so good to know that as a woman, there are voices like Tori's out there that help people SEE the TRUTH and not feed into so much of the bullshit that the church's preach these days - as she said through manipulating the very texts - the very doctrines they claim to be based upon.

  • "Get off the cross people we need the wood".Wonderful.

  • I love her!! she's so awesome and so right...everyone just needs to balance the femanen part and masculan part of them!

  • "Save yourselves people" = wise words.

  • she is a very wise and a well spoken person , that is a huge part of what I admire about her

  • Wow! Who was talking about Mayan prophecies back in the 90's? :) She's such a child of light ♥

  • She is referencing religion as a tool to save yourself. Past generations take it to literally. The book is for moral building ( to a degree) not an instruction booklet.

  • 4:11 - 4:33 is hilarious!

  • Oh, Yeah, I also wonder what she means when she says "I don't need a savior", is she saying that Christ is not important (or rejecting Jesus or God in some way)? I'm just curious.

  • What performance is that at 1:23?

  • Hallelujah!

  • Simmer Down,ladies-don't make me throw you in a pit of lime jell-o and watch you fight it out, because i'll auction off the winner to Bill Cosby. See ya later, eat the pudding.

  • Explore other types of spiritual experiences and take a look at some other religions. She's talking about the chakra system, which has ancient roots in India and China. She has had an incredible life and been fearless to ask all of the scary questions about consciousness, perception, and belief. This woman knows what she's talking about.

Either you understand her, or you don't. It doesn't fall into one of your arguments. She's not quoting your book.

  • Actually, she shows great analytical insight into christian mythology, and its power within the sociopolitical sphere. Simultaneously with a feminist consciouness. Her brilliance has enabled her success and endurance who are you to say she is ignorant.

  • Oh, and one more thing. My original comment stated, "tori, I think you are a great artist." One can appreciate art without agreeing with its implications. She does a fine job at exploring femininity within her art, however, I simply disagree with her conclusions. To me, Tori, on the surface appearing sexually and spiritually liberated, is actually a very angry women who had horrible experiences (raped as a young girl) being raised by a baptist minister.

  • You are just sexist, you reduce angry women to not being able to explre other human emotions, implying that her sexuality and independence are invalid. Also, it was methodist minister. Check out american Doll Posse where all western feminine stereotypes reside within one woman.

  • sentryclothes....exactly. im glad im not the only one who can appreciate an artists art and still have a rational analysis of her character outside of her music. shes an amazing and powerful song writer. but shes pretty much...well how she is outside of that.

  • Isis actually is the archetypal blueprint for the Virgin Mary. Christianity, in all acuality, is the "historical/theological hack"

  • Yea patriarchal swine, there is a feminist agenda, and the fact that these arguments are STILL occurring shows the thriving, oppresive, masculinist, heteronormative culture in which we live. Priviliege will not hold the white man forever.

  • How come you do not mention Islamic religion and culture in your analysis? By any objective assessment, there is far greater oppression, abuse, and mistreatment of women in Islamic countries.

I am sure that Tori would agree with my conclusion, but probably she is afraid to state this because people who speak up against the injustices of Islamic society/culture tend to turn up either dead as victims of terrorism or in hiding.

Nice to converse with a fellow Toriphile. Have a nice day.

  • She sounds ignorant because of her ridiculous claims on the bible:

There is nothing about women deforming themselves in order to suppress their sexuality in the bible. There is nothing about mary having to be a virgin simply because NOT being one was unclean (the whole point was that it was a miracle). Mary Magdelene is mentioned, like 4 times in the entire bible - she isn't even important.

Tori has missed the entire point of the bible, then likened it to all the other world religions.

  • sweetie, Mary Magdalene was cut out. She's actually verrrrry important.

  • cut out by who and when?

do you mean books that were left out of the bible when it was complied?

  • By the council of Nicea and the catholic patriarchy. Yes, when the books were compiled . when else would it occur, nitwit.

  • tori attacks the Christian institution and culture not merely the bible. The fact is the catholic patriarchy took scripture modeled it to there political philosophy. The virgin birth is supposed to be seen as a miracle of the goddess, going back to the Isis virgin birth myth. The catholic patriarchy distorted the meaning of this myth to hold female virginity as mandatory for virtue. You need to research the actual history of misogyny in patriarchal cultures because here religion is political.

  • oh dear...she's created her own religion

  • Um, actually, she is showing knowledge of indigenous culture.

  • And a lack of knowledge in christianity

  • Comment removed

  • Whatever, you sound like a colonized christian mind deperately trying to rationalize misogynist judeo-christian CULTURE. Also, the bible is a composite selectively constructed by the patriarchal catholic institution with their own political initiatives that were not a part of Jesus' teachings.

  • Haha you like your big words don't you? All I have to say is that the bible was re-translated by people outside the catholic church during the reformation, and the copies we have today hold fast to the oldest originals which exist....

    I'm not from a judeo-christian culture...

I don't feel the need to rationalize anything - to me it seems pretty irrational for there not to be a God.

  • tori, i think you are a great artist. however, i think you should probably not open your mouth about history/religion when you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • Comment removed

  • you just seem sexist.

  • and when did i say i expect people to always be ignorant? what i said was why do so many self proclaimed intellegent americans always talk about religions that they dont know about- as if they know about them- using these "intelectual" sounding references to make them appear as if they know what they are talking about..i didnt say ALL people talk like this. i was reffering to those that do..so maybe you should read things more carefully beofre telling im not intellegent.

  • um- not- the reference she made to buddha wa sthat buddha is a god- she said buddha was a god like all gods in all god worshipping religion. and that is not true. budhism is not about worshping god or putting all your power into budha or anything like that. she said that it shouldnt be about getting your power from a god like buddha- but from yourself. and thats what buddhism is...

  • why is it that every self proclaimed intellegent american sticks buddhism in with other religions- claiming that Buddha is a "savior". Buddha is sanskrit for "enlightened one" and Buddha said we are all Buddhas. the goal IS to find the truth iside YOURSELF and then become A buddha. Im so tired of people talking about religion. trying to be profound about things they dont know.

i like her music. i could do without her interviews.

  • And isn't that why she mentioned Buddha in the first place?

It's not particularly intelligent to expect that much ignorance from people all the time. It may cloud your own judgement. And it would certainly explain why you would take a position contrary to that of a woman who just stated that the power is within you. Break it up:

Power within you... we're all enlightened... get the connection?

This is by far the best interview I've seen of her.

  • I couldn't agree more. It is becoming popular to believe that all religions are the same. This is truly a belief out of sheer ignorance.

  • The point was that people look to someone else as being the enlightened one, rather than seeking it out themselves.

Christianity is modernly interpreted that enlightenment is not achievable individually, hence the need to worship Jesus, whilst not attempting on our own, since we're all too... sinful.

He specially said not to worship him.

    So did Mohammad.

  • yeah i get that point. and my point is that she included Buddhism in that list. Which means she has no idea what Buddhism is. and therefore shouldnt talk about it.

  • I believe she's talking about people misinterpreting the universal message of "be your own savior."

    Buddhism is included in this.

  • exactly

  • Fantastic interview... almost like a foreshadowing of The Beekeeper... In many ways, I think The Beekeeper is like the 3rd chapter to Little Earthquakes and Under The Pink.

Sometimes I miss the fiesty Tori of yesteryear. She's so composed and calculated, these days. I understand why she's calmer & more composed now, but, all the same, it's a pleasure to see these firey interviews of her youth.

  • This is the kind of thinking I would Love to see in more ppl.

  • Well spoken, couldn't agree more, thx..

  • Well, finally someone whom I can see eye to eye with. I agree with most everything Tori Amos says. And her music is great too!

  • Tori is way ahead of her time - like most geniuses people don't understand enough yet to appreciate her message (thinking she's 'crazy'). What she says is true, and the answers are out there for everyone who sincerely asks if you aren't sure for yourself. She is seriously extremely intelligent and BRAVE, damn. In the coming years our perceptions of 'right' and 'wrong' and religious fanatacism will come to an end, and people can start loving eachother for a change (Jesus' #1 teaching afterall)!

  • I loved watching her face while she was talking. thanks for sharing!

  • @pippigladstone No offense, but I think you don't understand, perhaps, the religious allegory. Tori is extremely intelligent. She used allegory and sarcasm liberally, so if you don't "get " that...it doesn't make her "out there" somewhere, it just means that she communicates in a way that you simply don't relate. No biggie. But frankly, MORE people should "need to come back to planet earth" if that is what you call her mentality.

  • @pippigladstone: you think she thinks through spiritual concepts in depth because she was raped, maybe? Uhm...I don't know. I suppose that could be, or...it could just be because she's someone who THINKS about things instead of just believing what someone else told her. I think she just is a person who rolls stuff around in their head and comes to their own ideas and conclusions. Probably a lot of creative people do that. I mean, I don't personally know the woman, but she seems to have depth.

  • she's very intune with everything around her and has an open mind and explores all manner of possibilities, takes time out to explain things that we mere mortals maybe not generally understand at first glance she's very knowledgable i think ppl can learn a hell of alot, if they get past their concept of her being a mad goose, she talks alot of sense, it's very comforting to have some you can turn to in hard times or confusion and have her way of explaining it so you are enlightened.

  • @DigitalGhost I absolutely agree.

  • She's describing ancient Native American, Mayan, and Indian beliefs. She's incredible.

No wonder so many people dislike her. She's not mainstream... I don't think many people can relate to her.

But she's a beacon for those who can.

  • She is so sensational

  • they should have showed her a clip of her music 15 years

from the time of this interview

and seen what she thought of it

what do you think she would have said?

  • @nottheredbaron ah, to speculate! after getting indignant in the early 90's at the idea of her entitling a song, "Cut and Dried," how would she respond to hearing that she'd later entitle some, "Fast Horse," "Hootchie Woman," "My Posse Can Do," and "The Power of Orange Knickers"?

after deciding against the slightly suggestive tight dress for the UTP cover, what would she have thought of her last two album's art? or pip's version of "Silent"? should we travel back in time and warn her?

  • @inexcelsis17

what song was she going to name "Cut and Dried"? why would she have an issue with that for a title?

Tori has definitely changed...but the early-mid 90s were nearly 20 years ago (shudder)

so I suppose it is to be expected

she can't have that perfect untouchable glow forever

I think Pip's "Me and A Gun" was crossing a line even for her

I hated Abnormally Attracted To Sin when I first heard it but it does grow on you

some real gems on there :D

  • @nottheredbaron i've moved from the us to the uk (tori has been my idol : ) so my fanzines where i read about the fictional cut and dried are in storage, unfortunately. her reaction to the rumor back in...93? was that there's no way she'd give a song a dumb title like that one. which makes "that guy" kinda funny now.

i realize we are all walking contradictions and evolve as we live. i just wish that the new releases could be as exciting as they were, instead of seeing what can be salvaged.

  • @inexcelsis17 I had all the early fanzines and I don't remember reading anything about a song called Cut and Dried. but its been over a decade since I had them and therefore read them...so I probably forgot about it.

in 1993 she was so pure and perfect...it couldn't possibly last forever. and then after Boys For Pele how could she ever get any better? I think maybe she's changed her music to cope w her voice change. either way I still love her and whatever she puts out I try to love ;)

  • she is real great

  • breathtaking.

  • i love her too, but in the last minute shes not too clear about something: i disagree with her putting buddha into the same bag as the other "saviors" you need to find outside yourself. buddha is not an external savior. buddha just gave his desciples methods to achieve the same state he had achieved - he never said the only way was thorugh him or that kind of crap. buddha wanted colleagues, not blind followers. everyone has the same potential as he had, regardless of race/origin/cast/whatever.

  • I see what you're saying, but the interview would have been boring if she had gone through every savior and classified them. Plus buddhists might not need to hear what she's saying as much as a Christian or an Islamic person might.

  • adekbule, that is not what I said!

I see on your favorites you have Tori Amos music, some anime stuff, and Flight of the Conchords. That is practically what I have in my favorites as well - we are the same. (Except I might have the equivalent of youtube porn in my favorites, too, but that is another matter.)

  • ah pardon me for not reading your comment thoroughly. my bet :p

  • I love her. She is so smart, and feisty (but in a very orchestrated way). I mean, it's such a rare ideal that's achieved here: to have such intelligence and talent wrapped into one person. dammmn.

  • I just finished listening to a bunch of stuffy piano players talk about their own interpretations of the music of dead white guys (which if i want to pass my degree I have to play) and then I listen to this woman. she is the player I want to be. a true visionary and genius.

  • Well put!

But I bet a hundred years from now, there will be stuffy professors studying Tori and talking about her music in this dry, clinical way. Giving it the dissection treatment. So when you play the music of the dead, try to think of it as if the guys who made the music weren't stuffy at all, only their followers and chroniclers who came along later... kind of like what Tori says about Jesus!

  • ♥ LOVE Ur Post, i play piano, flute, oboe, Fender 12-string acoustic and i admire Tori. i think her works will be more appreciated/understood in future times. p.e.a.c.e KarenMcLovin♥

  • All of our works will be admired more in the future..... tori is a genius

  • "You know, the best thing about being a piano player is that you have a really good left hand. And you can pretend it's anyone you want."

    I love you, Tori Amos.

  • @RorenLikeCake This is why I'm in love with this woman.

  • I wish Tori would read me a bedtime story every night. She has the most gentle, soothing speaking voice, even in her version of '96 Bonnie & Clyde. Disturbing content, but melting voice.

  • true genius!

  • I just LOVE that woman!

No one, from any time, has ever being SO brilliant.

    She's goddess.

  • One thing though, as far as I remember Buddhism teaches people to find salvation from within..?

  • I love how Past The Mission with Trent singing back up kicks in right at the end... I don't know why. But it's just a perfect finish for this amazing clip.

  • althou i'm pretty rational and would use other terms she is right about a lot of things.

First of all, althou women competing in the 'men' world from 1970+ is true, them adepting becomming more manlike is also true.

Atm its not about adjusting laws anymore, its about women not only competing in every aspect of the society, but also remaining their trueselfs while they are at it.

About the point she makes about religion. The messages of religion have become butchered over the years.

  • She is right on. You must watch to the end. She is unafraid of truth. As an effeminate male as I have been labeled, I can fully relate to some of the things she says from a womans stand point but being a man who people see as not strong. Except I am incredibly strong just in a different way than what people have been told over centuries.

    love Tori~

  • I would have to disagree with you there... as a girl who went to a Christian school, I didnt start criticising religion in forth grade. In fact I spent years thinking any sexual thought was bad, and I was afraid most of the time. So discovering Tori ten years ago, I felt anything but embarressment for her ideas. They opened me up to a whole new world, and while scholars may have been questioning for years, the music industry has not. Look at the top 20 charts and you will find the true cliches.

  • @ProfessionalWidow187 Yeah I know what you mean. I know Tori isn't gay or bi. Yet, I felt like Crucify was written for me, ya know? Almost like she was telling me, it is okay that you like girls too. That I shouldn't "put my heart in chains" and ignore how I was feeling. I discovered Tori Amos when I was 15 (so about a year ago) and haven't looked back since. Thank you Mrs. Amos!

  • Well, even though criticizing religion is not something new in general, I'd have to say that she definitely has an original take on it.

  • It's not my bag, but you have to understand the reason little girls CAN be open to that criticism so early is through other people taking on that message, through figures in the family and in the various media forms- what we can get exposure to

  • it's funny how this works... that women were expected to divide lust and love.. while it's actually the men who are able to keep these two seperate better than women can...

  • She's so smart!

  • id love to see the whole interview, is there more?

  • Tell it sister!

Would've LOVED to have been at that concert!

  • her voice is angelic

  • Her quote on 4:30 is now a sentence in Big Wheel:P! 'Get off the cross, we need the wood'

Realy love her high notes when she sings!

  • Absolutely LOVED THIS... Thanks for sharing

  • one of her best interviews i have seen so far

  • OMG, fantastic!

  • I LOVE YOU TORI AMOS!!!!!!!!

  • A+, tori!

  • Thanks a lot babe!

  • LoVe it. sex is god. same thing.

  • thanks a lot for this wonderful video of tori!
