It is definitely a unique engine noise which I can only guess is due to being transversly mounted. I found this snippet which pertains more to the exhaust note, than the "whirr": "Concerned about carburettors and riders' knees colliding, Honda had now twisted the cylinder heads inwards by 22 degrees, giving the engine a very distinctive inlet-exhaust line. The 80-degree firing angle gives the CX that characteristic engine purr, so beloved of V-twin engine fans."

Hey, saw your posting on the CX forum.. NICE Bike..
Do you have any idea what the "whirring" noise is??? ine does it too, as does almost every one I have ever heard run... just thought I would ask.
You will enjoy riding the CX.. it is a great bike.
