I think the fact that so much internet piracy exists is is someways beneficial for the entertainment industry. Especially in terms of music, because it will mean the people creating art actually like what they are doing and want thier art to be seen and heard rather than make money. To quote henry rollins "Id rather be heard than paid" If my band made an album and it was being pirated like mad, i would just be glad that people liked it, then if i wanted to make a living i would just tour.

I paid for Religulous (rented for a couple of days) and wish I'd pirated it, not worth the money he complains about losing. Sure I don't necessarily agree with pirating but laws like SOPA won't help, if you want to stop piracy offer a better service than the pirates.

Those laws took down Napster, Limwire, Megaupload etc. SOPA ,and what ever form that it will come back as, wants to circumvent the due process of law and shut down any site (Youtube, Google, etc) that has any copyrighted material (like this video you are watching now) or simply a rogue user on a site that links to some pirate site. We don't need draconian laws to replace the laws that are there.

Uh, I don't think he got owned. He is in favor of eliminating piracy, yes, but when he opened it up for discussion that was not the aspect of SOPA they discussed. They talked about logistical issues, other problems that would arise because of SOPA. I don't think anyone there was disagreeing with Bill Maher on the issue of piracy, and since that's really all he talked about, he didn't really get owned.

I think the fact that so much internet piracy exists is is someways beneficial for the entertainment industry. Especially in terms of music, because it will mean the people creating art actually like what they are doing and want thier art to be seen and heard rather than make money. While it's true that people want stuff for free, most opponents of SOPA aren't using the first amendment as a red herring. If ACTA or SOPA is passed it will destroy the paid entertainment industry. People will indeed stop pirating however they will move to the creative commons space and people will simply download legally free media instead.
Also, to any of the companies pushing these acts it is your own fault that I have ever pirated. In Australia I constantly recieve messages such as "This Video is unavailable in this region".

Ok, so they have a congress, they hold a hearing on bills, and then I guess the speaker reads the bill. He reads it, others fall asleep, tweet, listen to final words 'in a nutshell', and then vote. I guarantee 90% of those people didn't even know what SOPA and PIPA was about until, during the vote, they typed in google on their iPhones and it was blacked out.
They keep slipping in these ridiculous bills, say "that looks good, sign it!" Then leave.

g@johanasfav Dude, I am not an artist. I have never said one way or the other that SOPA or PIPA was good or bad. Frankly, I don't even care, as either way it would not have made the slightest difference in how I live my life. If the United States' Government decided to shoot themselves in the economic foot, then who the heck am I to question. I have never had any of my intellectual property stolen and passed around the internet. Can it not be enough to be against theft?

I "like" how Bill Maher thinks that everyone who pirated his Religulous video would be paying customers if the piracy wasn't legal. HA! He'd be lucky id maybe5% of the pirates would actually pay for it.
What Bill and many people in this entertainment business seem to forget is that piracy INCREASES exposure, which increase the fan base & thus increases the paying customer base. This goes the same for any film, TV show, music etc.

Right there, in the first few seconds of the clip, Bill says "Oh good - they stopped it" [SOPA]. He then goes on to speak about piracy. That is not expressing support for SOPA - it's expressing dismay at having his shit 'stolen'. That's a whole 'nother can of worms, and something about which I feel he was mistaken, but let's at least be arguing the correct point here, shall we?

First of all he didn't necessarily agree to SOPA. Honestly Bill Maher reminds me of Thomas Paine, a rationalist thinker using common sense to speak his mind. Thomas Paine was probably the most important of our founding fathers but gets no credit for actually having the guts to say he wasn't christian. @Vondur The point is that there is already laws in place to stop piracy. Those laws took down Napster, Limwire, Megaupload etc. SOPA ,and what ever form that it will come back as, wants to circumvent the due process of law and shut down any site (Youtube, Google, etc) that has any copyrighted material (like this video you are watching now) or simply a rogue user on a site that links to some pirate site. We don't need draconian laws to replace the laws that are there.
