The biggest myth of the Civil war was the honorable brave south. They were not brave or honorable.
Over 3/4 of the Confederate soldiers deserted. In fact, by the end, virtually all of them deserted, which is why Lee had to surrender. So they weren't brave collectively.
Nor were they honorable. They used massive slave labor to build their fortresses around Richmond, Atlanta, Petersburg. Untold thousands of blacks were whipped and killed working on the pussy South's defenses.

The South left the Union, the Southern States had their own Constitution. The Southern States voluntarily join a Federation of States, and had every right to leave.

Then Johnston and Beauregard's remaining men left, and TOOK THE HORSES. Those few who didnt run away, simply refused to fight.
Davis himself said without those massive desertions, you can not lose.

It's a bit different when the war is fought in your homeland. Before the war, my family was fairly well to do in Alabama. At the wars end they were living out of a cart towed behind a donkey, looking for a new home; not to mention the fact that my 3xgreat grandfather was basically enslaved by the Union Army to doctor for them, taken from his home at gunpoint. I'm lucky to be able to trace my family line though, since a Yankee gunboat shelled our courthouse to rubble, destroying all the records.
