@BewareTheWater11 He had a third of his tongue surgically removed due to Oral Cancer.....Unfortunate, I know, but he can still shred like a devil! Ed's the man!
Imagine you would work in a guitar shop only to pay the bills, and Eddie walks in asking you if he could borrow one of his signature guitars! You'd probably bang your head on the desk the whole day to make sure it isn't a dream!
@Sean2592 Eddie after the early years of using the echoplex has been using the Roland SDE 3000 delay. To make a long story short the chip in that processor was used in the boss DD2, then the DD3, and still in the DD3. If you want a cheap very close approximation of this tone use 2 boss DD3's one set to 250ms one to 500ms and use a bos PS5 et to detune to get that "thickined" sound. If you want analogish I'd buy the wapler analog echo it kills the Carbon Copy
amazing how much his style has changed. before it used to be do everything like if he was playing live. now everything is done in the mix. before it sounded so real, now it sounds just like everybody else's stuff.
@LifeBringsMusic no when you do everything like everyone else does, then you sound like everyone else. on the first albums, there was that raw element that came from capturing it like if they were doing it live. no one else had it because everyone else just added the effects after the fact. now that he does it that way too, that rawness isn't there.
@alpha1shadow Well, from what I can see, the rawness is there and will always be. It seems as if it's not because everyone after him has adapted that and made it mainstream which is what it seems like he's doing now. In my opinion, he hasn't changed, everyone else has.
@LifeBringsMusic I agree. Whatever way Eddie has recorded, it works because even when he did do more overdubs, it doesn't really feel overdone. Then when you watch them live, the band is so tight that you don't feel like you're missing anything.
This would've been around the Balance album era? Eddie reportedly had sobered up (for a while) and put on a bit of weight. Great to see he can stand up and talk fluently through his rig.
@vexxillo In the studio he does. They add effects during mixing usually. On Balance, he actually used his original Plexi Marshall on several tracks and on some overdubs. He also used the Marshall on VHIII for most of the songs and his 5150 was mostly used for overdubs and leads where he needed more harmonics. I have a feeling the new record might have his old baby too, since it was restored to original spec a few years back.
@Xcorgi He didn't use radiation or chemo. He used an experimental treatment that included liquifying his healthy tongue and injecting it into his veins... I shit you not! Sammy's book talks about what Eddie told him about the alternative method. Apparently this, plus some experimental "machiines" cured his cancer.
@TheHockeyCentral It looked like either she thought he was done talking or was just trying to push the interview along because, depending on whatever program this was from, they may have had a set time limit to include the segment on the show.
@DB73093 Not true. He used Marshall's, Soldano and 5150 on the Balance tour. At least that I know. I worked on one of those shows and personally miced his rig!
@AKMAC82 LMAO I so agree with you bro she didn't give a fuck. On another note it was really nice to see Eddie here in this shot really with it upstairs if you all know what I mean. In recent times he really let himself go to piss again, especially around the time of his infamous "Porn video" music he did, he must have been going through hard times and looked really out of shape in every area one could be. He is such a sharp lively guy and it's great to see him on his game like here. CHeers, IC.
hehe, that is Vanessa from Headbangers Ball. This was a show from the time that MTV was a music-channel. Many moons ago. Ah, back then maybe not everything was better, but MTV sure as hell was.
I don't blame him for talking the way he does to the U.S. press when it comes to interviews about gear. Most of the European press is just more interested in music rather than the usual gossip " hey, what happened between you and Valerie?? " crap. Frank Zappa felt the same way too.
WTF!!! the lady is like how many guitars would u take on tour like on a big tour like the one bon jovi is on right now......yea...cuz van halens not on a big tour as shes talking to him..
I absolutely love Eddie. I agree that this vid is extremely easy to watch compared to some of his!!! I really hope he's sorting things out for himself, and that he comes to the UK soon!! EDDIE, ARE YOU LISTENING???
@Skibble5150 Interesting that you should say that. I agree with you completely. It is so rare to see his brain working on all 8 cylinders. And may I add, he's also in a good mood. Folks don't slam me for saying that, cause I love the guy and all the music he does.
@DTM1864 I don't think an artist should ever have to be good or even capable of thier own PR. I couldn't care less if I personally like EVH or thought he was intelligent and easy to get along with.
@bornburied I don't disagree with most of what you say; it's just that so many of us grew up listening to Van-Halen and loving the music we often have this unrealistic expectation that our music heroes or heroes in general are these great personalities etc... But you're right, everyone is flawed and for our music heroes the music is what really matters.
@DTM1864 I thought it was odd that people hated on Yngwie 'cause he seems like(or is) a douche.Like Eddie, he was a game changer and modern rock music pays more homage to him than EVH. Insecurity is a bitch.
when did his voice sound like normal? the other recent interviews i've seen from other recent interviews sounded like it was cracking a lot. mainly from the mouth cancer surgery.
