  • he talks a hell of a lot different with a whole tongue.

  • This chick is absolutely the worst interviewer on Earth, Edward had to take over to save the interview.

  • I think we have THIS Eddie back now. :)

  • @TheHockeyCentral Saw them in Detroit. Yes, he is back!

  • It's called 'whiskey baritone' that comes from years of alcohol abuse.

  • AWESOME VID !!!!!!

  • I miss this Eddie.

  • @TheHockeyCentral They are reuniting for a Van Halen Tour in 2012.

  • Eddie stealing the interview for a commercial pitch, AHAHAHAAAA!

  • thumbs up if you wanted to know why it was really weird...

  • Eh? Eddie? talk sex with the girl! not guitar Dud'!?!

  • Haha he never used 510's.. He had Mr. Marshall Plexi sitting in the back.

  • He's one of the best guitarplayers in the world.I can't wait for the new VAN HALEN record!

  • ya his voice sounds a lot differint now he has a smokers voice

  • Because what...? I wanna see the whole interview! 2:48

  • His best sig guitar! i have two and if they were stolen id kill the fucker! lol.. the peavey 5150 was his best amp too.. the mk3 just dont cut it

  • his voice is so different now

  • @BewareTheWater11 thats what smoking/ removing a third of your tongue will do.

  • @BewareTheWater11 he had half of his tongue cut out and years of drinking will do that.

  • @BewareTheWater11 He had a third of his tongue surgically removed due to Oral Cancer.....Unfortunate, I know, but he can still shred like a devil! Ed's the man!

  • @TheMJN75 ...fuckin hell, oral cancer? Thats the last time I lick any pussy.

  • Raise the mic!

  • Ahh.. Headbangers ball.. those were the days..

  • i can understand him unlike another interview

  • He reminds me of Tommy Emmanuel...

  • ITS REALLY WEIRD BECAUSE WHAT.WHAT!!!!!!!!!!

  • does anybody have good advice for a delay pedal on hit older stuff, i know analog but beyond that i'm clueless

  • @Sean2592

He used old tape-echo's.. but you could always get an MXR Carbon Copy or even better a Roland RE-20 to simulate the sound.

  • @Sean2592 Eddie after the early years of using the echoplex has been using the Roland SDE 3000 delay. To make a long story short the chip in that processor was used in the boss DD2, then the DD3, and still in the DD3. If you want a cheap very close approximation of this tone use 2 boss DD3's one set to 250ms one to 500ms and use a bos PS5 et to detune to get that "thickined" sound. If you want analogish I'd buy the wapler analog echo it kills the Carbon Copy

  • @jeffmsnipes did you mean Wampler?

  • Eddie can play any guitar and make it sound great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • PEAVEY SUCKS

  • where's the frankenstrat :(

  • he's such a nerd. love it.

  • amazing how much his style has changed. before it used to be do everything like if he was playing live. now everything is done in the mix. before it sounded so real, now it sounds just like everybody else's stuff.

  • @alpha1shadow Nah, everybody else's stuff sounds like his!

  • @LifeBringsMusic no when you do everything like everyone else does, then you sound like everyone else. on the first albums, there was that raw element that came from capturing it like if they were doing it live. no one else had it because everyone else just added the effects after the fact. now that he does it that way too, that rawness isn't there.

  • @alpha1shadow Well, from what I can see, the rawness is there and will always be. It seems as if it's not because everyone after him has adapted that and made it mainstream which is what it seems like he's doing now. In my opinion, he hasn't changed, everyone else has.

  • @LifeBringsMusic okay i'm not gonna argue because you obviously don't get it.

  • @LifeBringsMusic I agree. Whatever way Eddie has recorded, it works because even when he did do more overdubs, it doesn't really feel overdone. Then when you watch them live, the band is so tight that you don't feel like you're missing anything.

  • What delay pedal Is he using?

  • notice that the neck pickup in his guitar has the white & black coils reverse from the production models.

  • This would've been around the Balance album era? Eddie reportedly had sobered up (for a while) and put on a bit of weight. Great to see he can stand up and talk fluently through his rig.

  • @5150VanAlien yes it is the Balance era. his gear gives that away. this is right before he moved over to using the Wolfgangs.

  • I notice Ed smokes his cigarettes like a joint....Is that the "dutch" in him?

  • Hold up...isn't there a newer vid where Ed talks about tone and he says all he ever used was just a guitar through an amp?

  • @vexxillo In the studio he does. They add effects during mixing usually. On Balance, he actually used his original Plexi Marshall on several tracks and on some overdubs. He also used the Marshall on VHIII for most of the songs and his 5150 was mostly used for overdubs and leads where he needed more harmonics. I have a feeling the new record might have his old baby too, since it was restored to original spec a few years back.

  • @DarthKazi I hope so too...but rawer than balance/VH3

  • Heh ... Eddie looks like just another ordinary Asian guy here.

    And that's horrible hair styling.

  • Geez! SHe looks like a dried up, knocked up old groupie skank!

  • Eddie's voice really changed...

  • its really weird because WHAT ?

  • I've never heard Eddie's real voice. He sounds soooo bad now. There's nothing left of his real voice because of all of that smoking.

  • @johnadorian Not just the smoking but the radiation therapy for throat cancer and he had 1/3 of his tongue removed as a result.

  • @Xcorgi He didn't use radiation or chemo. He used an experimental treatment that included liquifying his healthy tongue and injecting it into his veins... I shit you not! Sammy's book talks about what Eddie told him about the alternative method. Apparently this, plus some experimental "machiines" cured his cancer.

  • I'd love to know when this was actually filmed. It looks like post-rehab Ed, but it sounds like Ed from 10-15 years ago.

  • @TheMidnightPhil This was 1995

  • Eddie, when he still had teeth.

  • Eddie probably boned her after the interview.

  • @fluff191 dude,she was pregnant...lol

  • @Pat9201 Ahh shit I totally missed that! But he probably still did haha

  • @fluff191 im not saying he didnt but thats still messed up....lol

  • 2:49 BECAUSE???? because WHAT? lol

  • i use a dry cabinet' she's like is that a type of wine?

  • shes thinking "really good wood"

  • 2.09 The woman completely cuts him off and it looks like Ed is thinking, "Alright. he doesn't want to hear what I have to say? Fuck her then." LOL.

  • @TheHockeyCentral It looked like either she thought he was done talking or was just trying to push the interview along because, depending on whatever program this was from, they may have had a set time limit to include the segment on the show.

  • Back when Eddie wasn't yet at his control freak stage. He just seemed like a humble, cool guy back then.

  • it's really weird because.... then what?

  • @NotSteve234 "It's really weird because... anyone who wants my tone all they have to do is-" haha

  • LOL He never used 5150's. Marshall JMP's!

  • @DB73093 Not true. He used Marshall's, Soldano and 5150 on the Balance tour. At least that I know. I worked on one of those shows and personally miced his rig!

  • The lady interviewing him...fucking hilarious.. "uh-huh..uh-huh. ok, yeah.,uh-huh" all the while she's really thinking "boys with toys".

and I'm sitting back thinking, "yup, yup"

  • @AKMAC82 LMAO I so agree with you bro she didn't give a fuck. On another note it was really nice to see Eddie here in this shot really with it upstairs if you all know what I mean. In recent times he really let himself go to piss again, especially around the time of his infamous "Porn video" music he did, he must have been going through hard times and looked really out of shape in every area one could be. He is such a sharp lively guy and it's great to see him on his game like here. CHeers, IC.

  • @AKMAC82

hehe, that is Vanessa from Headbangers Ball. This was a show from the time that MTV was a music-channel. Many moons ago. Ah, back then maybe not everything was better, but MTV sure as hell was.

  • "It's really weird cuz...." Cuz what Ed?...CUZ WHAT? You're actually Jesus with a guitar? TELL US!

  • did he get his tongue back? lol

  • @chroylikesfish This is from 1995 or 1996; the tongue did not grow back.

  • I don't blame him for talking the way he does to the U.S. press when it comes to interviews about gear. Most of the European press is just more interested in music rather than the usual gossip " hey, what happened between you and Valerie?? " crap. Frank Zappa felt the same way too.

  • WTF!!! the lady is like how many guitars would u take on tour like on a big tour like the one bon jovi is on right now......yea...cuz van halens not on a big tour as shes talking to him..

  • Wow. The only coherent EVH interview every filmed.

  • @Skibble5150

    except for the chick.... CLUELESS!

  • @firstgearlead

Ha, Vanessa Warwick. She was married to Ricky Warwick from The Almighty.

  • @Skibble5150

Ha, yes you are right. Ed was sober on this Balance Tour. It showed in his playing too. Best playing ever...

  • @Skibble5150 haha

  • I absolutely love Eddie. I agree that this vid is extremely easy to watch compared to some of his!!! I really hope he's sorting things out for himself, and that he comes to the UK soon!! EDDIE, ARE YOU LISTENING???

  • @Skibble5150 Interesting that you should say that. I agree with you completely. It is so rare to see his brain working on all 8 cylinders. And may I add, he's also in a good mood. Folks don't slam me for saying that, cause I love the guy and all the music he does.

  • @DTM1864 I don't think an artist should ever have to be good or even capable of thier own PR. I couldn't care less if I personally like EVH or thought he was intelligent and easy to get along with.

If the art is good, thats all that matters.

  • @bornburied I don't disagree with most of what you say; it's just that so many of us grew up listening to Van-Halen and loving the music we often have this unrealistic expectation that our music heroes or heroes in general are these great personalities etc... But you're right, everyone is flawed and for our music heroes the music is what really matters.

  • @DTM1864 I thought it was odd that people hated on Yngwie 'cause he seems like(or is) a douche.Like Eddie, he was a game changer and modern rock music pays more homage to him than EVH. Insecurity is a bitch.

  • @bornburied I'm sure glad C.C. Deville of Poison didn't let all the homage paid to him go to his head.

  • @DTM1864 lol Good ole CC, somebody had to play actual rock n roll amidst the pretension.

  • @DTM1864 P.S. and there is way -way too much EVH obsession, waaayyyy too much.

  • @Skibble5150 For real!

  • @Skibble5150 perfect statement

  • Comment removed

  • Killer!!!!!

  • when did his voice sound like normal? the other recent interviews i've seen from other recent interviews sounded like it was cracking a lot. mainly from the mouth cancer surgery.

  • @codyjt5150 This is from 1995 or 1996, 4-5 years before the he underwent the "cancer prevention" regimen as stated by his loyal press folks at the time.

  • @jwtravel oh, i thought this was from just recently until i looked at the mtv logo. plus the at the time i was typing this i was on the toilet with a really bad case of stomach virus and the toilet was my best friend for a few days lol

  • Now i love this guy, but, and it is a very big but, ed said when the new wolfgang came out that they were the same guitar as he uses in the studio, and before his previous two models, musicman, and peavy were not identical! i have owned the musicman loved it, i own the evh wolfgang now love that too, but are they really the guitars he uses that we have????

  • I love this clip, Ed just seems so comfortable and relaxed talking guitar and gear. Very human.

  • It really weird because? WTF

  • @lidesnowi I said the same thing..

  • play the MF ed!!!!!!!!

  • love the ebmm.

  • Beautiful guitar and the greatest amp out there!

  • I KNEW HE USED A HARMONIZER! either that or a chorus. great post man.
