So the soviet generals go back in time, to a time before WW2 to get Einstein and develop WMDs before anyone else, but since the cold war starts before WW2 the japs are never defeated and ignored until they become very powerful and attack. Is this how the storyline goes? If so what about the Nazis? how come they don't grow incredibly powerful as well?

Looks fun but my God Historically wrong... How did Japan get all that technology?  I mean the USA gave them or sold them the technology-industry... The Germans gave them the Jet engine... They copy every ones stuff...

Also the Japans were already westernizing by the 1800s so there uniforms will look like every one ells...

I played the first and 2nd of the series too. They didn't seem so cheesy, corny or funny to me as well. But great games they were, and IMO this 3rd Red Alert is much better than its predecessors.
