The camera was quietly dropped and the birds have mysteriously disappeared.

Lately, I have a hawk that roosts in a nearby tree. The squirrels get as close as they dare (10 feet) and scold the hawk incessantly until it's had enough and leaves.

Actually they use their feet as much if not more than their beaks. It's called "footing" their prey, stabbing it to death, much safer then getting their head and eyes near the mouth of the prey

Anyway, the hawks hold the prey with their talons and feet and tear with their specialized beak. And they prey on animals typically smaller than them so the animals die pretty quickly after being grabbed forcefully and stuck with 8 - count'em - E-I-G-H-T talons sticking into them.

@colddose1 - You are kidding, right? That's definitely a red-tailed hawk. Check the color of the tail at various points in the clip. It flashes that tell-tale russet red. Also those black coverts feathers on the underside of the shoulder joints on its wing are a dead giveaway.
I can understand when people say, well, this is how nature works: kill or die. What I don't understand is when people, like many of those who have posted here, can joke and make fun of the victims of such cruelties of nature. Do you think it would have been funny if it had been you in that bird's talons and not the poor baby squirrel. There is nothing funny about dead, especially when you are being eaten alive.
hawks can take animals like this because in the capture they stick that sharp taloned foot on the neck of the animals and hold them down. It's hard to fight when they are holding you down by the neck. When they get hold, they will not let go.

Why make the distinction between 'conservative hunting types' and 'non-conservative hunting types'?--are your words not applicable to Liberals who hunt? I think it's rather uncontroversial that hunting animals can be done as sport, but not only that. And it's psychobabble to say that hunters think that hunting qualifies them as "real" men. The irony is that, in some groups, whether you could hunt was THE qualification for manhood. You would have been considered a woman.

@braininahat, well because the minute someone speaks up about how they dislike hunting, conservatives spew out their hate for liberals, so im just giving it back to them. I'm gun sportsman, but I shoot patper targets. It's more of respect for God's creatures thing for me. I'm ok with using animals if necessary for food, and non-luxury clothing (ie furs coats), because after all, these are our basic needs. But for sport, i don't agree. Oh yeah, no one would EVER mistake me for a woman lol..

@magickitty0128 now define for SPORT: because i duck hunt and eat everything that i kill. i think thats the most natural harvesting of food there is nowadays. the animals dont suffer through slaughterhouses or are deprived of being in the wild. and the money i spend to hunt helps ecologists preserve duck environments, which in return makes MORE ducks live. so, and this is a fact, if you hunted more ducks would live than die, and the ducks that would die would just rot. so am i wrong?

@colddose1 - You are kidding, right? That's definitely a red-tailed hawk. Check the color of the tail at various points in the clip. It flashes that tell-tale russet red. Also those black coverts feathers on the underside of the shoulder joints on its wing are a dead giveaway.

hawks can take animals like this because in the capture they stick that sharp taloned foot on the neck of the animals and hold them down. It's hard to fight when they are holding you down by the neck. When they get hold, they will not let go.

@Dylandier I get kind of sad when I see animals get killed and eaten on TV. But then there are those shows that show it from the predators point of view, like "This mother tiger is starving. She is dying to eat, and so are her cubs. If she doesn't make this hunt, some of them might starve to death."
It just sort of works like that. So I guess we just have to accept it.

Male bears are notorious for killing young bears simply because they see them as competition. Lions and hyenas kill each other all the time without eating the other for the same reason.
