  • Can you please give us your formula for potting soil? How much manure/vermicilte etc. ratios.

  • Great video. Thanks for the tips.

  • Very COOL! I was researching "5 gallon Plastic Grow Bags" because they are so much cheaper priced at $8 for 25 bags and they have drainage holes so I wouldn't have to drill. I live on the east coast and am tired of struggling w/ poor soil so this type of gardening will work for me. Thanks for sharing the video. This is great! Nice job! :)

  • They're beautiful. I'm trying this out this year too.

  • I did that last year and this year too. Last year they were successful.

I had crab grass too. This year I put some composted leaves (a thick layer 2") all over the area that the crab grass was and it seemed to kill it pretty well.

  • Very Nice!

  • You did a good job of the video. I've been trying to grow a garden in AZ and it's next to impossible when it gets hot. Thanks for the ideas. I will keep it smaller than yours however. This will be a test summer. :-)

  • takes ages to load on hd my friend

  • very awesome. great job. I live in vegas and have some videos

  • I may have the opportunity soon to move into a house in the desert.....near PalmSprings. There is no yard to speak of but I want to do my own container gardening. My concern is the heat. Are there specific varieties you grow in the extreme heat? thanks CCCCCCCCC

  • @cthepower You can put a screen over your plants to reduce heat and disperse sunlight coming from the sides of the screen cage to the bottom of your leaves. Doubles plant growth rate and prevents them from direct sun burn.

  • @Ryanventura Thanks for the tip ~~~

  • try permaculture, heavily cardboard the yard and then add put layers of organic matter on top, topsoil and plant will get rid of any persistent weeds. for more information

  • great video, but for god sakes hold still!! Tripod brother!! HD is great, so good I may need a Dramamine after watching LOL, nice plants man

  • I do the exact same system with my peppers in the Cayman Islands. I currently have about 50 plants in buckets with drip irrigation.

  • maybe if you bought a magic flying carpet other people wouldn't complain about back ground noise! great variety of toms & peppers, 1 gal seems alot but I'm from england so we don't see much sunshine also we pay extortionate amounts of cash for water used.

  • im doing a bucket and tote garden this spring

  • wow, please stop pacing, the sound of the rocks underfoot distracts from the video...I had to stop it...but otherwise good...

  • Good presentation, but you are moving around too much.

  • Hi, you are a pacer. When you keep pacing back and forth like that, it is very distracting, besides the noise you make crunching in the rocks. If you would talk a little louder and eliminate all other noises and get yourself a chair and sit down, you would have a MARVELOUS VIDEO. Why don't you do a redo, you would have perfect video then! Really, it is good, but your volume is low and you move too much, and SHOW us the holes you made in the buckets, how many, how big, where, SHOW US. Thanks!

  • question. WHy didn't you just build raised beds if you already have the yard space.

  • I'm doing this next year. Could you do an informational video on how the irrigation works? I'm not familiar with anything other than a good water hose and sprinkler. Thanks.

  • Just a note to all thinking about doing a bucket garden. I did thirty with the two bucket self watering system, and found that the soil at the bottom remained too wet all the time and created root rot. So I have converted back to this system, gravel at the bottom with lots of holes underneath, 2 parts potting soil, one part manure, three parts AZ natural soil so the mixture isn't so rich. Am in the process of doing a drip system (all on my apartment patio.)

  • Cover the soil with a black plastic and make a hole where you will transplant the tomato plant, the plastic will not let the grass grow again. I saw that in a strawberry plantation.

  • too much water. tomatoes produce more flowers when they are thirsty. more flowers means more fruit.

  • That nut grass I believe we have the same thing here. If you cover your garden area with news paper ( or something else news paper is cheap) for about a month or 2 in growing season the nut grass will die. You will have to sink a barrier about 4 inches around your garden to stop it from coming back But even if you don't you beat it for a year or so.

I use a frame with a string marking squair feet the string holds the paper down.

Your bucket garden is nice I am trying potatoes.

  • you could try pouring boiling water over the wholle garden area, it should kill the plants down to the roots.

  • It's nothing to look at (aesthetically), but it's practical, and looks productive.

  • where did you get all the buckets...

  • did you grow these from seeds or did you buy them already sprouted?

  • The 'Maters will grow JUST FINE with the bermuda grass- you-re just freaked out by the prevalance of weeds intermingled with your veggies, dude! You have an awesome area in that area- plant those matres there! Let go of the desire to not have weeds- I've had huge weeds in EVERY SINGLE GARDEN I have had in 30 years, since I was tending my grammas as a kid. You're worrying too much and too.....you know....anal. Try a section next year and see if your production suffers. TRY IT. Peace!

  • 1 gallon per plant every day? 50 plants = 50 gallons of water a day, 100 days = 5000 gallons of water in Arizona. what does that cost?

  • where do you get all those buckets? I want to do this in my small backyard!!

  • @crazykasumi Lowes, Home Depot, painters, restaurants (check dumpsters)

  • @crazykasumi Lowes, Home Depot, painters, restaurants (check dumpsters), I buy cat litter in buckets and use those.

  • how manay 5 gallo bucket container u use to grow tomatoes

  • FYI - I don't grow anything in a PVC bucket. Plz, do some research about what is used to stabilize PVC and you won't use them either.

  • you are making me dizzy, going back and forth

  • that would work great for ganja....but maybe you already knew that.....wink

  • go chandler, az! way to grow tomatoes on the surface of the sun! :) i live in Tempe and i have to grow the tomatoes in the same exposure as you say...

  • Awesome garden!

The footsteps sound EXACTLY like minecraft!

  • are u good

  • WHAT KIND OF SOIL DID YOU USE ,& DOES THE TOMATO CAGE CAN STAND UP & IT WONT FALL DOWN WHENTHE WIND BLOW HARD ?

  • did you ever consider using smart pots or pot bags? they allow proper drainage and air circulation

  • you show a lot of tomato plants, but don't show how your irrigation is set up...this would help a lot

  • you're making me dizzy, walking backwards and forwards.

  • whatsa good ptting mix for peppers, cantaloupe and watermelon?

  • id love for you to show us a closer look at your irrigation system . what size is your reservoir , how big of a pump do you use ? what about fertilizers during the plants life cycle ?

  • whaaaa!!!!! i have the same number of plants! but i water by hand!! I need to go hang myself!!

  • Where can you get 5 gallon buckets for less than $2.50?

  • @IsraeliteMessenger homedepo/lowes

  • is that one tomato tree in one buckt? what soil u use ?

  • I had great success in 2010 with bucket containers and this year will be modifying them so that they are all self-watering to cut down on excessive water waste. I have photos of my 2010 results in my video showing how to build a self watering container.

  • Holy crap you have a pacing problem.

  • tomatoes love the sun and can take all day, the reason some die early is also becuase of growing determinate and undeterminate plants, determinate will only produce so many pounds of tomatoes and then dies off, where undeterminate plants if your weather is warm year round they can be trimmed back and will keep producing year round but should be replaced with cutting every couple of years

  • Why havent you made raised beds around the edge of your garden?

  • Ok, so this is awesome. I live in SE Oklahoma, and there are a lot of bugs here. So what I am worried about is keeping the plants bug free without using some sort of chemical solution. Do you know of any more organic, plant friendly, chemical free ways to keep my plants from being destroyed by bugs? Looks great tho, I really want to do this.

  • @jezuzgirl For my tomatoes I crush 2 cloves of garlic and put them in one gallon of water. Let it set for 2 days. Strain it thru a piece of cloth and put the liquid in a spray bottle. Works for me, I just spray my tomatoes and leaves on both sides. Good luck.

  • Excellent job!!! I just moved to an apartment, and am planning my container vegetable garden.(yay! no double-digging for me this year)...just started some seeds inside today, and will be charting their growth and other details to see just how much money I'll be saving on veggies. I'm planting tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, spinach, and herbs...any other veggies you've had good luck with that I should consider?

  • Omg sit still!! Wut are you on crack or something! You didn't stand in one spot for more than 2secs in the whole video!! Geeeeeezzzzzzzz!!!! Nice grow tho!

  • you should look up global buckets on youtube, i think you would like their watering system better, less water wasted.

  • How are you doing the drainage?

  • I live in Tucson and Eeegees sells food buckets for 1.00 , also check craigs list

  • what do you do with so many tomatos?

  • Great vid sir. I live in a condo here in So California and am planning to plant Tomatoes in containers in about two weeks from now. Is this too early to do in So California? It gets down to about 40 on the coldest nights in the winter and that isn't always the case. Mostly about 51 degrees at night regularly is the norm.

    Peace

  • How do you stop them from freezing in the winter?

  • Everything I hear and read says that miracle grow is horrible. Why not go more organic with bone and blood meal etc?

  • @ArizonaAdventures hey i got one, check out compost tea, you airate a compost mixture in water and it helps grow the vital microrganisms that help the plants roots to absorb nutrients, check it out, the plants become huge and delicious from what people say, gotta try it out, pretty organic setup!!

  • @boxa888 Yeah, I've been wanting to try compost tea for a while now. I've done alfalfa tea which seems to work wonders and this week I will try my hand at worm tea from our worm composter. I let you know how it turns out.

    Enjoy!

  • @ArizonaAdventures hey i also got a organic way of getting rid of the bugs, you take a vacuum and make a small end that wont destroy the leaves, and then you suck off as many bugs as you can, to reduce their destruction and suck up the eggs on leaves, instead of spraying everywhere, use the same effort to suck up the bugs and ensure they are out of there. sounds good!! i am really interested!

  • I too grow in buckets and large pots. Home depot buckets run just under $3 here.

    Thanks for the video!

  • thnx for posting this. ive been considering doing the same thing because ive got poor soil quality here. question- are the 5gal buckets big enough to allow the tomatoes to fully fruit? and, have you tried growing potatoes, if so, how did it go??

  • That looks great. Can you give a run down on your soil formula? Also what kind and size of gravel do you have on the bottom?

  • lol you are crazier than me for tomatoes I thought I had a problem lol

    Best Wishes

    Nick

  • ok saw in the vid 1 gal every morning. I have 2 gal pots with better boys on my picnic table. I give them about a half gal every day til water comes out the bottom. Plants are strong but my tomatoes are crack at the stem. Quite a few of them.. What am I doing wrong... 2 year growing anything

  • @switch55. If the tomatoes has heavy you need to add support to the plant, string, wire or something old his weight

  • @Diezko22 Heavy what? I built 4ft tall cages around them. Plus the stem is tied to to a stake in the middle

  • How much water do you give the tomato plants and how often?

  • This is great work, I'd love to do this in my back yard, but it gets sun all day long :-(

  • Thank you for sharing the neat ideas on the 5 gal. bucket and irrigation system. Next time please keep the camera a little bit steady.

  • This is an awesome idea since you could move your plants around if they need more or less sunlight.

    Thanks for posting

    Devin

    BadBoyOrganics

  • Instead of drilling holes on the bottom, you should try drilling it on the side about an inch off the bottom to retain some water in the bucket.

  • WOW!

Excellent work! Great way to make use of buckets!

    Thanks!

  • love the gravel idea, thanks

  • @lol6996 not much, Dig it up (deep) and put it in a 5 gal w/ a tomato grate and it'll get 8'+ tall I bet. Good luck!

  • Thanks for sharing with us your great healthy tomatoes,.. growing in buckets is very expensive around $5 to $10 a bucket and a waste off each bucket as they will need holes in the boottom for drainage ... I don't see why not dig up the soil where they already sit in the bucket and plant directly into the ground , and use bailed pea straw or hat laid on thick tlayer to prevent any weeds from growing ... So maybe keep to what you have already established and proven .. Kind Regards

  • @bruce3128 lmao! 8)

  • @orbisonroad Hey I live in Gilbert and I just started a herb garden in some pots. Where did u get those buckets? I was actually going to go try to buy some today to do this exact same thing lol

  • @bruce3128: Racist

  • @bruce3128 Really dude .How ignorant

  • @bruce3128 So you have a problem with illegal mexicans? How would you solve this problem?

  • Looks great. Good way to do it.

  • beautifull garden. love the irigation system

  • Can I grow 2 tomato plants in one 5gal bucket?

  • Very nice video. I'm doing the same in Mississippi due to our rabbit problem. I'm growing cantaloupe, tomato, cukes, squash, peppers, zukes and herbs. y tomatoes are almost four feet tall now.

By the way, I love your watering system. I water mine by hand, which I really enjoy, but yours looks very innovative. Well done. Hope it turns out well for you.

  • you have inspired me to try this starting today!!!!

Thank you so ery much for posting this!

  • Very good job! I think I might try this as our soil in Florida is VERY sandy. I've tried building up the soil over the years but it all goes away. Good job :)

  • Looks great. good work

  • amazing. giving me great idea's. Thank you

  • Nice job amigo..... Great idea and I am glad you are having continued success. Thanks for posting.

  • Nice video.

  • I'm wondering if you had better success with some veggies over others?

I did the buckets for two years and while they produced some, the output was lots lower than the ones I planted in the ground.

I located some tomato plants that are supposed to be "for container gardening" ... so we will see how they do.

  • nice tomato grow theres a video that have better results on bucket than on a rise bed you should make a comparison, hows your irrigation system working on a timer?

  • what's with the pacing back and forth? Who cares about the HD camera- I'm dizzy from the back and forth back and forth.....

  • I'm seasick from your walking back and forth constantly! ;^)

  • I could only get herbs to grow well in my 5 gallon buckets all the other vegies were a dismale failure...Oh and the HD looks nice...

  • Great video! awesome idea, thanks much for sharing with the rest of us .I'm sending this video to my friend in chicago-she only has patio space. Dawg from Ga

  • Thank you for sharing...I live in New Mexico, and am getting ready to try a self watering bucket system.

  • Your plants look very healthy!

  • lol in arizona its hard to get our bermuda grass lawns to grow so everyone gets rocks for a lawn instead

  • nice garden! every plant is healthy. i'm gonna have to get some of those cage supports like you've got on top of your plants.

  • when will they have the yellow flowers and how do they set

  • Good stuff....

    show us more

  • Can you elaborate more on your drip irrigation setup? The 1/4 tubing comes off your main line to the buckets correct? How is the tubing inserted into the main line?

  • where here at the bahamas ,i have no idea when is the right month to start planting tomato ,pls help me !!

  • right on bro i gave this vid 5 stars..i live in the california desert and we get the same sun i have raised beds but the sun here will kill anything except corn and root vegies like onions....i had to resort to screen tarp last summer but was able to grow peas and a bunch of other stuff all winter or what we in the west call a perfect 70 degrees right lol........good garden though you seem to have the same moto as me....never enough tomatos....good luck this year wish me the same

  • Hey orbinson...nice set up... a hippie friend of mine has that same exact set up, that's the way I learn to grow. (the buckets the hole at the bottom, I put DG decomposed granite at the bottom., but that set up is familiar.) paint your buckets.. you'll thank me in cost of five gallon buckets..sand 'em with a less than medium grit and paint em whatever color I do green.. because the sun's definently going to make those buckets brittle.. I recomennd the gray ones that last longer..

  • Great video, you inspire me to try bucket gardening.

    Carolyn

  • whene is the right month to start growing tomato thanks thats a good idea ur have that will make the 5 gallon bucket use , where can i buy tomato seeds ,does kmart selling the seeds ?

  • @misskisskadee depends on your geographical location,

  • Hi orbisonroad,

I live in a apartment by North Mountain, my balcony faces south. Would I still be able to to bucket gardening with facing south?

    Thanks

    Cregar

  • yes, of course you would. Mine get allot of shade anyways. Have fun dude & let me know how it turns out. I just planted broccoli, cauliflower, butter-crunch lettuce, romaine lettuce, carrots, radish basil, cilantro & cabbage I'm going to have to post a winter bucket garden video pretty soon.

  • Wow, very nice! I haven't had any luck at all growing vegetables in AZ. I'm from the east coast and haven't figured it out yet. I find the buckets break down after a year. Plastic and sun! Anyway, you have inspired me to try again! :-) Thanks for posting!

  • I have been wanting to do my tomatoes in 5 gal buckets for more rooting, but need to root some out. (Buckets, that is.)

I absolutely LOVE that you improved so much on a container garden drip-irrigation method. Drilling the holes into the bucket...great thinking.

  • I love the efficiency of your garden. I don't think your plants could look any better.

  • how are your plants doing now that it's July? I think this is a great idea. I will proceed to ask everyone I know for their pool buckets. Is that ok to use, BTW - pool chem buckets? If not, then maybe the ones they sell at home depot. I live in Chandler, BTW.

  • They are producing still. Getting lots & lots of tomatoes. I will have to make another video. Chlorine tab buckets work just fine, just wash out with a little Dawn or Joy & you're good to go. You live in Chandler, then you know how hot it is outside, people think this is easy, picking these tomatoes when it's 108% is a major chore just by itself. :-)

  • Hot it is indeed!

Thank you for the quick re.

  • Nice job! I love my buckets too.

  • Very nice setup. Got kinda dizzy from walking back and forth though.

  • RJG7782 get the sunset western gardening book tells you about the southwest texas- california

  • Wow- we are moving to Arizona in just a couple of weeks, and I have been so depressed about it, because I really wanted to move somewhere that I could garden. I thought I was doomed to be totally dependent on the stores there. Now I feel a bit of hope that we can grow some stuff. If anyone has any insight to what I may look for in a property (near Sierra Vista), I would much appreciate it. It is a different climate than I am used to and close to the border, so what to have and what to avoid?

  • BTW - I have over 25 5 gallon buckets full of different veggies!

  • Great Idea, but seperate your tomatoes, or the will cross polinate. Move your peppers too, or you will have spicy tomatoes.

Would like to see a How to - on your hose and drip system! Really.......Do you have a video on that?

    Please reply.

  • Hi,cross pollinisation of Tomatoes is not a problem unless you intend to save the seed.

  • Fantastic! I'm also growing in 5 gallon buckets lager pots and anything else i can get my hands on. Keep up the good work it looks great!

  • Nice garden I'm doing my first garden this year in 5 gallon buckets. You have inspired me to post some vids of my (small) bucket garden. I hope all goes well good luck!

  • I sure will leave comments. It looks great. Can you do peas in winter I wonder? I am a 5 gal bucket grower as well. I started with just SGF but expanded on my narrow south side of the house with 5 gallon buckets. Last year I had 15 foot poll beans coming out of them thus I expanded upon that success.

  • Thanks for the great idea. I am a 1st time gardener. Good luck. They all look healthy.
