Oh... how I miss him. I'm running in circles by now, as I can't find stuff I haven't already seen. And to know no more great thoughts will be made into sentences by this mind, is just... sad. No wonder people invented religions to cope with it. To fully grasp how a mind can just vanish, is really hard work.
I don't want to seem like I'm criticizing Hitchens, because I only found out about him the other day and I already love him (and happen to agree with him in terms of atheism and anti-theism), but he seems to deny that religion has done ANY good in the world whatsoever. And though people can act charitably and kindly without religion, it's also true that religion has motivated some people to do good.
I think my take on that, would be that if there is no God (Which is the belief that I hold), then it wasn't Religion that enabled them to do good, as it was already in themselves. I guess my point would be, that if there is no God, then it isn't God, nor Religion, that is motivating us to do these good deeds. We are already capable. Maybe Religion has influenced good, but I think if you took Religion away, we should still be able to achieve the same. If not, then we are a sorry creature.
he sez theres been enuf books about that.and that it doesnt matter in that since ppl do good without relig why we need it?also he sez you can imagine a person doing good for their religion but then you can also imagine them doing evil for it. even if they wudnt personaly do evil.they can for relig.
The Christian church as done God a great disservice, as we have become just as hateful and judgmental as those who do not believe.
But I assure there really is a God and I hope He helps you understand the truth about Him, that He truly does love each one of us and desires for us to come to Him in love, not in fear and judgment.
I can't prove to you there is 1 true God, because God is comprehended in our hearts, not our minds!
If he desires us to come to "H"im (why always the capital) perhaps he should stop threatening us with burning and torture in hell if we don't believe. Some loving guy.
Yet the communist atheists of the former Soviet Union, China, Eastern Europe, Cuba, etc... are responsible for killing 500 + million people over the last 120 years!
Hitchens is totally deluded in his thinking, 1. for blaming religious people with being responsible for mass death and
2. Because the way he talks of Christians in general... totally misrepresented!

Everything.... one major basis for communism is hardcore atheism, not just believing that there is no God, but actively killing those that do believe in God.
Just because these communists were atheists, doesn't mean they killed in the name of atheism. They didn't. They killed in the name of their ideology. They saw organized religion as a hinder for their political ideology, so they struck them down. It had nothing to do with any belief about god. Atheism is not anti-religion. How could someone kill in the name of atheism? It's just a belief that there is no god. It doesn't inspire people to do things - good or bad.

okie dokie, if you say so.... but I believe otherwise. I've had many friends over the years that had escaped the Soviet Union, Romania, North Korea, and even Cuba due to the commie persecuting and killing Christians because they would not renounce their faith.
But go ahead and believe as you do... I know otherwise. :)
I feel sorry for your friends, but you can't be serious in believing that it was their persecutor's atheism that was responsible for the horrible things done to them? I don't think you understand what atheism is. It is not a polar opposite to theism. Theism can make you do good things, and it can make you do bad things. Atheism doesn't make people do anything!
Communists typically regarded religious organizations as a hinderance towards the creation of a worker's paradise. Some religious groups also opposed the communists. Once again, we are generally looking at political issues, not a question of atheism. Some of these people were killed, and yes, they were christians. But they were killed because they were viewed as POLITICAL enemies, not because they were specifically christian. Thats like saying they were killed because they liked borscht.
Communism has nothing to do atheism. Communism is a political system. Atheism has to do with religion or lack of it. Soviet version of communism was dictatorial and perverse and most other communist countries followed the example.
@thefranstastics Atheism is not the basis for communism. This is a horrid slanderous fallacy which has been debunked by numerous people including Hitchens.
The amount of murders an atheist/Christians commit is an irrelevant question; I would ask, does god intervene? Was Genesis right in regards to creationism? Is it moral to "love your neighbor?" Does one take literally or metaphorically the bible? And so on..religion only consoles and gives hope which to its credit it does, however when we live in a world in which unjust things happen to good people, one must consider that in this world science is right, shit happens.
Communist atheist killed people not because they were atheists. In Russia they were systematically killing anyone who would challenge the political party, regardless of their religious beliefs. You need to do some reseach before making asinine statements.
And Christians committed a lot more crimes in the name of religion than all atheists put together. Yes, atheists do commit crimes, but not in the name of atheism. You have no argument.
It's no secret that Hitchens thinks and argues that disposing of Saddam Hussein was the only right thing to do. He's hardly being coy about it either, but very outspoken.
So why do you think the interviewer should have derailed the interview with such an irrelevant line of questioning?
I agree he was there to promote his book on the subject of God not being great. There were other questions that didn't directly have to do with the topic of the book. It wouldn't have derailed the interview. The point is that this show never has anyone that is a conservative, and rarely has anyone that disagrees strongly with strombolopolus on a lot of issues. I found it a little to convenient that the one time he has someone one that disagrees on a key issue of our time, he skirts the issue.
