  • Lou needs more heroin!!! It used to make him a surly fucker!!!!

  • I will never hit a woman. I never wanted to. I never wanted to advocate against this so strongly until I heard this.

  • nothing but the master of lyrics

  • depressing as hell but i like it.

  • Berlin: the best album ever!!!!

  • "Think more than just I."

  • @Mizmop

Actually this is Lou without the velvet underground at his best :)

  • A shitty cover of Stephanie Says by the Velvet Underground.

  • @Elmerturnipseed not really, what it is is a re-imagining by the original songwriter, personally I prefer Caroline, its deffo not shitty anyway, You may prefer when Lou did it with VU, but its not like its unlistenable, its extremely brilliant.

  • @Elmerturnipseed

You ought to learn more about yourself...Think more than just I.

  • "She put her fist through a window pane" - such a powerful fucking lyric. A woman in desperation and a woman fighting back summed up in one line. The genius of Lou Reed.

  • Human Drama does an excellent cover of this.

  • what is in her mind? as she gets up from the floor... I don't love you anymore...while biting her lip....but she's not afraid to die....when she takes off they laugh and ask her.....funny feeling feeling...so cold so cold so cold

  • @dahlia476 "When she take speed, they laugh and ask her" no?

  • this is not anybodies favourite song, if it's not everybodies x love

  • This is so similar to Stephanie Says. Kinda cool.

  • 36年の歳月が飛んだ。

  • my name's caroline, hahah...

  • @saranham so's mine ;)

  • A master album. Bob Ezrin, I believe, although I may be wrong, booked himself into a psychiatric unit after producing this album. I can understand that. Apologies, mr. Ezrin if my facts I'm wrong - not that there's any shame to being nuts. I've experienced phases of craziness.

  • is this a sequel to Candy Says from VU? Or did he just do a series of "[girls name] says" songs?

  • @kosmischesynth.....no, 'Candy Says' was about Candy Darling...google her....'Berlin' is a masterpiece of an album. Listen to it in its entirety and you'll agree...follow the story throughout the album...

  • @kosmischesynth no he's just rather fond of the format you described

  • Caroline shouldn't have complained about having a better man.

  • This ain't bad but I do like Stephanie Says better. Of course, the lyrics make the two songs very different.

  • Don't see anyone queueing up to say, "Hey, my name's Caroline lol" for this one.

  • listened to this on a loop.last night when they came in drunk again.they can never remember anything.

    bruises heal,the mind doesn't.

i love this song so much.

  • not a sad song, more redemptive,

  • not a sad song, more redemptive,

  • so visceral, rips through every nerve, every wire in the heart.

  • I think it's ironic that Berlin made the 500 greatest albums of all time despite Rolling Stone blasting the shit out of it years earlier. It definitely deserves to be on the list.

  • brilliant song piece of art. i like this and the aslan version to fantastic artists!

  • A lot of people don't like this album, and I can understand why in a way, but for me this is one of Lou Reeds best work, I wish I could have seen the live show that he made of the album a year or two ago, one friend who went and thought he liked Lou, hadn't heard this album before, he said "it was very dark and depressing" I said I tried to tell you BUT...

Oh Jim is another favourite for me, I would like the chords to this to try and play it on my guitar, I'm gonna listen to the Siouxie version.

  • God damnit Caroline.

  • @xmisogyny

    lol

  • @cinedores

What the fuck are you talking about? If anything this is pro-woman, you jackass.

  • @mussman717word

songs about women being beaten up are pro-women - said like a true misogynist cunt

  • @cinedores

Lou Reed paints a portrait of reality. If you don't like it, just go off and live in your fucking fantasy land, you silly twat. How do you expect to counter a terrible problem by just ignoring it. Shit, how many people do you think heard this song and perhaps it stuck with them, and they donate to an abuse network. Pull your head out of your ass, jack-off, for Christ's sake, fucking humanity is disgraceful.

  • @mussman717word

mr reed will always have credibility whilst there are cunts like you around - why dont you just bend over and ask him how far hed like to go in?

  • @cinedores

You have no clue about art, do you?

  • @mussman717word

Lou Reed paints a portrait of reality - DIAL A CLICHE

  • @cinedores

It's not a chliche if it's the truth. You're just a fucking sad excuse of a human being.

  • a lesson to the 'tea party' scumbags who support violence to women and gays.

  • Stary dobry Lou. Im starszy tym lepszy.

  • 'you can hit me all you want to' - at least its consensual

  • @Rnewmanguy

    ;)

  • @Rnewmanguy its sarcasm

  • Liked it in college, but hard to listen to due to my line of work--too sad to listen to.

  • Sembra Comunque bella di Battisti, non credete?

  • @Perfidia4ever: Vero... se non fosse che "Berlin" è successivo di un anno a "Umanamente uomo: il sogno".

  • mac 1976

  • Past experiences ive had make this amazing song really hard to listen to for me. I still love it, and I love Lou Reed.

  • 3 fans of domestic violence didnt like this song

  • Is Caroline suppose to be Nico? Cos I've read that lou told her that some of the songs were written about her.

  • I bought this album when I was 17 and it epitomised my life at that time; it is so precious to hear it again (got nicked during a party at my house) as everything has stood still in my mind, like a time capsule. It's beautiful and other and something I can never recreate, like coming home.

  • brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • It makes me cry everytime i listen to the XxX

  • "Why is it you beat me??!!? It isn't any fun." get 'em Lou

  • This is one of the best songs ever; it has got amazing lyrics and amazing everything.

  • The best of the Berlin songs - the only one where he gives 'Caroline' her own voice - gives me a chill every time

  • One of my favs. She's not afraid..

  • @phree2

    she will always be

  • Simply a brilliant song ~~ Incredible~~

    nedthetoothpick*com

  • you can hit me all you want to, but I don;t love you anymore

  • On ya Lou.

  • lou reed should up there with the beatles and dylan

  • it's like he redid stephanie says for caroline

  • How come I'M a drug addict, black, & living in the South Bronx (the American definition of ghetto) my entire life but still cant manage to muster this level of self-pity and the grandiose notion of my suffering as some sort of metaphor for human existence? (it's not) Oh to be a wealthy, white male rock star now that spring is here--now THAT'S suffering! Lou's like one of the Romantics (Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Blake) for those who hate 2 read poetry not found on bathroom walls while barfing.

  • @dantean His wife, Caroline, is the one who took her life. He wasn't referencing himself. This song has nothing to do with race, gender, status, or location. It has to do with drug abuse and the selfishness of suicide. And while I agree with you that it is silly for someone blessed with so much to wallow in self pity- I have to point out that depression affects not only those in lower social classes, but touches even the highest in status. Not even the wealthiest white male is happy all the time

  • @RavissantJules I was being mean. I sometimes get that way. I love early Lou even while I have little-to-no use for the downtown NY punk scene he and VU (among a couple of others) are responsible for having grandfathered. I greatly appreciate your replying to my snide post.

  • @dantean no problem at all. Thank you for understanding my side. I do hope I didn't come off as snippy. That was not my intention.

  • @RavissantJules Not at all. It occurs to me that my original post makes it sound as if I don't care for this song, which really isn't the case. I find sad millionaires who are also world famous a little too, too precious for my tastes, but I do like this song. I think Berlin is somewhat more uneven than most people do, even while it features my favorite rock drummer and favorite rock bass player. Their only pairing, to my knowledge.

  • @dantean wow it is so refreshing to hear of another addict that references keats and wordsworth are you fucking kidding i come from a wealthy white family. only with dreams of being a rock star long gone. lou always makes me feel better 4 some reason or another.

  • @dantean cos this song is part of a 'fictitious' album, a story, a novella on 2 sides.

    great artist!

  • Loser

  • @bartholomew313 If you only knew...

  • Lou's best album. Sad and dark.

  • I'm happy my name is Caroline right now!

  • When she takes speed they laugh & ask her 'what is in your mind'....

Her friends must be aload of tosser's..

  • one of the saddest songs ever written...Berlin is an absolute masterpiece to me.and "The kids" is even worse...

  • @ogo57 this is such an underated lou reed record

  • @ogo57Kids, still chills.

  • it was like unreal to sing about this at that way of life back in 73' no one ever heard of lou till the late 80' let alone sing about real things insted of pop bubble gum rock they dident sing of gettho druggies or trans sexual;sults that was not heard of ever yet....

  • Alaska . . . . . Olvido Gara Jova

  • that's what caroline gets for wanting a man instead of a boy. pretty song anyway.

  • But she's not afraid to die...

  • There's an awosome pop star/icon in Spain who got her name, Alaska, in this song. Good taste!

  • I have played this album a zillion times, so beautiful!

  • A-ma-zing.

Great chorus. I love this song very much. Thanks to my dad, he said: ''You need to listen to this.'' Right! It's awesome!

    Love it. <3

  • One of my favorite song ever.

"Caroline says while biting her lip life is meant to be more than this and this is a bum trip."

TODAY AND ALWAYS UNITE TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN.

  • it doesn't excuse it or anything, but caroline isn't really the best poster child for anti-abuse sentiment. she is a mentally abusive drug addict.

  • oh so that makes domesic violence ok! Get Real

  • did you even bother reading my comment? it opens with "it doesn't excuse it or anything..." i'm saying that there are plenty of other characters real or fictional that would be a better poster child for that cause.

  • Why is it that you beat me? It isn't any fun..

  • it is so cold in alaska

  • Can play it at my guitar <3

    Great!!

  • Great stuff!!

  • Dear Mr. Jeffers,

    You pick them,

    I'll play them.

    So sublime.

Thank you from windy, cold Greece on a Sunday afternoon in November.

  • AMAZING.

  • All her friends call her Alaska!

  • So, Mr. Jeffers, have you reached your limit? ;)

  • What a chorus! Beautiful.

  • great song.

  • this song is so sad!

  • Domestic violence bliss

  • the story of an hopeless love

  • ... Nice Vibration ...

  • too cool!

  • sublime

  • One of the best albums ever !

  • true words here!

  • makes me cry every time

  • Why is it that you beat me? It isn't any fun. Classic song from one of the greatest albums of all time. Cheers for this.

  • I see that it is not dead---this album was reco9rded from ideas and fragments of other songs Mr. Reed wrote---it's the final work, a masterpiece. Finis! Love the name 'WaldoJeffers'. I love 'The Gift', too..

  • This and 'Blake Says' are so beautiful together :(

  • I completely agree.

  • Sad to the bone.

  • 5 stars!!!!

  • i used to listen to this album at my radar site in Alaska back in 73.I bought the only copy the bx had .never regreted it

  • This song was originally "Stephanie Says" and sounded a lot more positive than this.

  • i like stephanie says better and that has nothing to do with the fact that my name is stephanie

  • gewoon het einde

  • It's so cold in Alaska... Makes me cry everytime... i love/hate Lou for "Berlin".

  • I Had an amazing dream with this song, uhm.. this make me wanna cry..
