@Elmerturnipseed not really, what it is is a re-imagining by the original songwriter, personally I prefer Caroline, its deffo not shitty anyway, You may prefer when Lou did it with VU, but its not like its unlistenable, its extremely brilliant.
"She put her fist through a window pane" - such a powerful fucking lyric. A woman in desperation and a woman fighting back summed up in one line. The genius of Lou Reed.
what is in her mind? as she gets up from the floor... I don't love you anymore...while biting her lip....but she's not afraid to die....when she takes off they laugh and ask her.....funny feeling feeling...so cold so cold so cold
A master album. Bob Ezrin, I believe, although I may be wrong, booked himself into a psychiatric unit after producing this album. I can understand that. Apologies, mr. Ezrin if my facts I'm wrong - not that there's any shame to being nuts. I've experienced phases of craziness.
@kosmischesynth.....no, 'Candy Says' was about Candy Darling...google her....'Berlin' is a masterpiece of an album. Listen to it in its entirety and you'll agree...follow the story throughout the album...
I think it's ironic that Berlin made the 500 greatest albums of all time despite Rolling Stone blasting the shit out of it years earlier. It definitely deserves to be on the list.
A lot of people don't like this album, and I can understand why in a way, but for me this is one of Lou Reeds best work, I wish I could have seen the live show that he made of the album a year or two ago, one friend who went and thought he liked Lou, hadn't heard this album before, he said "it was very dark and depressing" I said I tried to tell you BUT...
Oh Jim is another favourite for me, I would like the chords to this to try and play it on my guitar, I'm gonna listen to the Siouxie version.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
misogynist mr reed - po-faced shit - note other songs like there she goes again - this guy clearly has a problem with women - watch out laurie anderson
Lou Reed paints a portrait of reality. If you don't like it, just go off and live in your fucking fantasy land, you silly twat. How do you expect to counter a terrible problem by just ignoring it. Shit, how many people do you think heard this song and perhaps it stuck with them, and they donate to an abuse network. Pull your head out of your ass, jack-off, for Christ's sake, fucking humanity is disgraceful.
I bought this album when I was 17 and it epitomised my life at that time; it is so precious to hear it again (got nicked during a party at my house) as everything has stood still in my mind, like a time capsule. It's beautiful and other and something I can never recreate, like coming home.
How come I'M a drug addict, black, & living in the South Bronx (the American definition of ghetto) my entire life but still cant manage to muster this level of self-pity and the grandiose notion of my suffering as some sort of metaphor for human existence? (it's not) Oh to be a wealthy, white male rock star now that spring is here--now THAT'S suffering! Lou's like one of the Romantics (Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Blake) for those who hate 2 read poetry not found on bathroom walls while barfing.
@dantean His wife, Caroline, is the one who took her life. He wasn't referencing himself. This song has nothing to do with race, gender, status, or location. It has to do with drug abuse and the selfishness of suicide. And while I agree with you that it is silly for someone blessed with so much to wallow in self pity- I have to point out that depression affects not only those in lower social classes, but touches even the highest in status. Not even the wealthiest white male is happy all the time
@RavissantJules I was being mean. I sometimes get that way. I love early Lou even while I have little-to-no use for the downtown NY punk scene he and VU (among a couple of others) are responsible for having grandfathered. I greatly appreciate your replying to my snide post.
@RavissantJules Not at all. It occurs to me that my original post makes it sound as if I don't care for this song, which really isn't the case. I find sad millionaires who are also world famous a little too, too precious for my tastes, but I do like this song. I think Berlin is somewhat more uneven than most people do, even while it features my favorite rock drummer and favorite rock bass player. Their only pairing, to my knowledge.
@dantean wow it is so refreshing to hear of another addict that references keats and wordsworth are you fucking kidding i come from a wealthy white family. only with dreams of being a rock star long gone. lou always makes me feel better 4 some reason or another.
it was like unreal to sing about this at that way of life back in 73' no one ever heard of lou till the late 80' let alone sing about real things insted of pop bubble gum rock they dident sing of gettho druggies or trans sexual;sults that was not heard of ever yet....
did you even bother reading my comment? it opens with "it doesn't excuse it or anything..." i'm saying that there are plenty of other characters real or fictional that would be a better poster child for that cause.
I see that it is not dead---this album was reco9rded from ideas and fragments of other songs Mr. Reed wrote---it's the final work, a masterpiece. Finis! Love the name 'WaldoJeffers'. I love 'The Gift', too..
