The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge says: “Previous to Augustine [of the fourth and fifth centuries C.E.] there was no serious development in Christianity of a theory of predestination.” Before Augustine, earlier so-called “Church Fathers” such as Justin, Origen, and Irenaeus “know nothing of unconditional predestination; they teach free will.” (Hastings’ Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics, 1919, Vol. X, p. 231)
@October31st1517 Ignatius, who is also Theophorus, to the church of God the Father and of Jesus Christ the Beloved, which hath been mercifully endowed with every grace, being filled with faith and love and lacking in no grace, most reverend and bearing holy treasures; to the church which is in Smyrna of Asia, in a blameless spirit and in the word of God abundant greeting. I give glory to Jesus Christ THE God who bestowed such wisdom upon you" - Ignatius' Letter to the Symrnaeans, Verses 0-1.1.
@October31st1517 your version of this quote only appears to be specific to the Lightfoot & Harmer, 1891 translation - NO OTHER. This is the standard JW rebuttal used on most web sites.
@dunklaw No, the translation I useis by Maxwell Staniforth. Face it, election & predestination was taught by the apostolic fathers. Are you not interested in truth? Please read St. Ignatius greeting to the church at ephesus.
@October31st1517 For his part, Ignatius envisioned a new organization of the Christian congregation, with just one bishop presiding “in the place of God.” This bishop would hold authority over many priests. Such inventions opened the way for further waves of unscriptural teaching. - is a text from this man reliable?
@October31st1517 In the second century C.E., false gospels spread spurious accounts of Jesus’ life, and the Fathers frequently lent credence to them. Ignatius, for instance, quoted from the so-called Gospel of the Hebrews. And regarding Clement of Rome, one source says: “Clement seems to know Christ, not through the Gospels, but through noncanonical writings.”
@October31st1517 orthodoxwiki. org puts it this way regarding Ignatius: -
They bear signs of being written in great haste and without a proper plan, such as run-on sentences and an unsystematic succesion of thought. Ignatius is the first known Christian writer to put great stress on loyality to a single bishop in each city, who is assisted by both presbyters (priests) and deacons. (cont.)
@October31st1517 (cont.) Earlier writings only mention either bishops or presbyters, and give the impression that there was usually more than one bishop per congregation.
@October31st1517 In the epistles of St. Ignatius the idea of natural immortality as a proper element of man's soul is completely absent. - so are you going to cherry pick teachings ?
Clement never refers to any Gospel, but frequently refers to various epistles of Paul. Yet he calls them wise counsel, not scripture--he reserves this authority for the OT ("Old Testament"), which he cites over a hundred times (M 41-3). On a few occasions he quotes Jesus, without referring to any written source. But his quotations do not correspond to anything in any known written text, (cont.)
@October31st1517 (cont.) although they resemble sayings in the Gospels close enough to have derived from the same oral tradition. This suggests that the Gospels were not known to Clement. Yet he was a prominent leader of the Church in Rome.

@October31st1517 Just been reading a book on google books called "Divine Truth Or Human Tradition" by Patrick Navas.
I highly recommend you have a look at it, especially the chapter "the 'deity' of Jesus Christ" regarding John 1:1 "the word was a god" & also the commentaries of John Calvin (regarding passages in John) that contradict fundamental trinitarian beliefs.
Whatever--just because people don't have everything right--trust that the Spirit will lead her into all truth--I know the Lord has really used her to open my eyes on some things. We need to stop the tearing down, the judging, and the finger pointing. She is our sister in Christ and God hates all this hacking on one another.
@October31st1517 Maybe tell her that if you care. Or do you think because she doesn't have everything right that God has written her off . The Spirit will lead her into all truth. Do you say and do everything right? Maybe ask God what he thinks. I know about the word of faith movement but I also am learning to be in and of the Spirit and the Lord led me to her and used her in my life. Does he want us walking in fear or trusting that he'll protect us from false teachers. Thanks for caring.

Men do have freewill. It is only concerning salvation that man's "freewill" does him no good. The WCF teaches that:
Man, by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation: so as, a natural man, being altogether averse from that good, and dead in sin, is not able, by his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto. Chapter 9.Sec 3
Thank God for the Council of Orange and the Synod of Dort! If I didn't have these two as witnesses against all the mad, heretical braying of men I don't know what I would do.
No one knows the Father, except the Son. Therefore, I will listen to Scripture and will hear what God says about God. If one isn't God (or someone who holds to Gods words, speaking by Scriptural authority), then one is a liar to presume to speak for Him. But thanks be to God for orthodox confessions, holding fast the Word!
@surshot56 It depends. There are Arminians whom I believe have hearts that are right with God. However when one takes freewill to it's logical conclusion, that is where we see the danger.
@October31st1517 That's very interesting. I must say however, that it does make sense that God would choose who would believe him since faith is a gift from God himself. I think what baffles the mind is how can God be completely sovereign and yet allow humans to have free will. This is something we are just going to have to ask him since he created everything.

Another silly heretic. another drop in the bucket! There is nothing new under he sun. The lies of the serpent in the Garden, continue to plague us today - and now, even more do, out of the voice of woman.
Well Done Mark !! You've shown once again, that stupid heresies are just that - STUPID!
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Could someone from the Tulip camp explain 1 Samuel 15 v 11. Genuine question from curiosity about this doctrine. If God Himself repented over setting up Saul as king - as he turned back from following him - where is the foreknowledge here?
God's "repenting" is His sadness over the wickedness of Saul. But this doesn't deny God's omniscience. An imperfect example (but still gets the point across) is a wise parent seeing a child plotting to steal candy. The parent foreknows the child will soon steal the candy, and is saddened.
My example shows that foreknowledge and repentance can be complementary. Of course there are imperfections in the example, God foreknows everything before He created, for example. But the point still works.
@fulcrumpoint "Repentance in God is not, as it is in us, a change of his mind, but a change of his method or dispensation. He does not alter his will, but wills an alteration." ~Matthew Henry
@October31st1517 If you are the elect does that mean you are saved before even being baptized? Anywhozel. Today I learned that humans only have two destines. To parish or to everlasting life. John 3:16 is pretty much the Gospel in a nut shell. :) I pray that God takes you out of debt soon. Pray for my tio. He got scammed on eBay. :/
@October31st1517 What about the Baptism of Jesus? After he got Baptized and he got the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. If we get Baptized we the gift of the Holy Spirit. I don't know. All I want to know about is The Church of Christ. Nothing man made or anything like that. But what you said was the opposite of what this other man said from the Church of Christ. I'm so confused. O.o lol :)
Boy, Jesus is lucky that people believed. Or else He just died to return to Heaven with no victory and empty-handed. So is your god a lucky god or is is He the sovereign King of Kings and Lord of Lords?
I don't think that you can really consider using your free will to choose faith a "work." Works of the bible are quite litterally that, work. Such as, going out and helping people or donating $100 to your church. Doing these things won't save you, but if you are saved, you are more likely to do them.
If you believe the bible, then you believe God gave us free will. However, your beliefs say that we do not have free will and can only choose sin. So, which is it?
@morsusmihi Pragmatism. "Free will" is nowhere in scripture. "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day." John 6:44. 'And He was saying, "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father." John 6:65. Blessings.

@MustardSeedish So then...God forced the fall and then decided to punish most of the people who came after it for something that He caused? Sorry, that doesn't make sense. If I had a kid and told him/her to go get me my shoes, I wouldn't spank him/her for bringing them to me.
@MustardSeedish Now, as for the verses that you said. Read a little bit further to John 6:45 "It is written in the Prophets: 'they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me." So, if we choose to listen to the teachings of God, we will come to Jesus.
John 6:64 "Yet there are some of you who do not believe.'..." showing that we can choose to believe.
@morsusmihi But there are some of you who do not believe " For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. And He was saying, "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father."
John 6:64 AND 65 Another perfect example of God's total omniscience. Thank for pointing that out. ;)
@MustardSeedish yes, the Father is omniscient. That was never in question. The question was whether He forces us to love Him or allows us to. I left out the rest of the verses for two reasons. 1) I was running out of remaining characters. 2) it was irrelevant to the topic at hand.
@MustardSeedish What I'm trying to get at is that this kind of behavior is illogical and unbefitting of a loving God. Saying that God forced the fall and then is going to punish most of mankind for it doesn't make sense. Also, if God made Adam and Eve eat the apple since they had no free will in your religion, then why did he go looking for them and ask why they were hiding? He would already know what they'd done and where they were because he would have forced them to do everything.
@morsusmihi Do you love God or humanity more? God is loving, but sin in light of a perfect and holy God cannot exist. It's all about Christ and His glory. What you believe in is repackaged humanism my friend.
@MustardSeedish Honestly, I don't care about humanity, people can choose as they wish and I don't have any control over that...that's the glory of free will in action. If sin cannot exist "in light of a perfect and holy God," then how do you propose that God made Adam and Eve sin? Since, according to you the bible says nothing about free will.
Sorry, but I believe in the one and only God, not the teachings of a man. I use the logic and word that God gave me to guide me, not John Calvin.
@MustardSeedish I've never read John Calvin nor did I quote him. I gave you two very powerful quotes from Jesus Himself that you can't refute. I could list many more. I admit there are mysteries of God that my finite mind can't understand this side of Heaven. That is what true faith is about. Trusting Him and His authority and not man.
@MustardSeedish I never said that you did, however, you do follow his teachings. So you want scripture? Deut 30:19, "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live (20) and that you may love the Lord your God..."
@MustardSeedish Gen 2:19 "...He (God) brought then (animals) to the man to see what he would name them" -shows that Adam had the free will to choose names.
Ecclesiastes 8:9 "...There is a time when man lords it over others to his own hurt." Man has dominated man to his injury, I.E. man is responsible for the bad things that has happened to him throughout history, not God.
@morsusmihi That was a privilege he gave to Adam. I hardly would compare naming the animals to a supernatural rebirth of the Holy Spirit. We have no control for our spiritual rebirth as we have control over our fleshly birth. God decrees because He is God, and not us. To be honest, I was like you a couple of years ago. All I can say is read and meditate on every word of scripture in prayer and ask God to reveal the truth to you.
@MustardSeedish Hebrews 11:7 "By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family." God warned him about the flood, but did not force him to save himself. Noah exercised his free will when making the ark.
@morsusmihi God enables faith and repentance. It is not something we stupid, sinful, self centered humans can muster on our own. "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins." Acts 5:31, When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." Acts 11:18
@MustardSeedish No, God doesn't enable faith, He grants it to the repentant. In fact, read a bit earlier in acts 5:29 "Peter and the other apostles replied: 'We must obey God rather than men!'" I.E. they choose to believe God rather than men.
And also look at Acts 11:13 "He (not God) told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, 'Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved."
@morsusmihi What I'm finding is that you're not making a proper contextual, historical exegesis on any of the text you are showing me and I'm sorry that I don't have all day to argue with you. I'm a busy mom and I have to go. We could go at this all day. God delivered me from this shallow Americanized lukewarm "Christianity", and I'm so glad for that. I pray He would deliver you too. He is more amazing and more powerful and more holy than you can possibly comprehend. I say this in love. Study!
@MustardSeedish It's interesting that you're saying that I'm not taking the verses into context when I've shown you that the only verses that you gave me are taken out of context.
I pray that someone helps you to pull yourself away from the grips of the devil and into the loving embrace of God.
@October31st1517 You believe in a God who says one thing and does another, a God who forces us into sin so that He can play savior and bring us out again. Your God is a proud God, not a loving one. In other words, you worship a Loki, a trickster god who doesn't love anything.
@morsusmihi A work is any action that you excercise to get right with God. Repenting does not save us, but it is a fruit that we have been saved. Freewill is a modern doctrine that must be shunned by the bible believer.
@October31st1517 Then how come all you people shout REPENT! If it does us no good? God didn't have to give us a way to heaven, but He did because He loves us. He wouldn't force us to love him because forced love is rape. He gave us the will to choose life or death, blessings or curses. He did not force us to fall and does not condemn us to hell for making us not believe!
@October31st1517 Wait a minute. You just said: "A work is any action that YOU EXCERCISE to get right with God." Then you said we don't have free will. How can one exercise work or action if he doesn't have free will? If God causes one to excerise work then God is really working to get right with Himself.
You're back!!! What a comeback video! I love your Poltergeist version better than the original. I've had a few samplings with this woman. I pray that God will deliver Anita like he delivered you and my friend. Keep preaching against the people who will not keep to Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solo Christo, Soli Deo Gloria.
I love it....... I want no part of Her GOD, He is unable to save any one, He does not know the future, He is learning things each day, and Now that I think about He maybe a She in Her Book. I will hold on to my God because He needs nothing from me to save me. He will (did) give me Faith and that's it. I believe..... I come to HIM with the open hand of Faith. Repent and STOP Taking GLORY FROM GOD by placing it onto yourself. (works).
@October31st1517 Hey bro, when you get a chance, I know we're friends on FB, Look at some of my statuses recently and just Pray. going through some major medical issues right now.

@October31st1517 your version of this quote only appears to be specific to the Lightfoot & Harmer, 1891 translation - NO OTHER. This is the standard JW rebuttal used on most web sites.
dunklaw 1 year ago
@dunklaw No, the translation I useis by Maxwell Staniforth. Face it, election & predestination was taught by the apostolic fathers. Are you not interested in truth? Please read St. Ignatius greeting to the church at ephesus.
October31st1517 1 year ago
@October31st1517 For his part, Ignatius envisioned a new organization of the Christian congregation, with just one bishop presiding “in the place of God.” This bishop would hold authority over many priests. Such inventions opened the way for further waves of unscriptural teaching. - is a text from this man reliable?
dunklaw 1 year ago
@October31st1517 In the second century C.E., false gospels spread spurious accounts of Jesus’ life, and the Fathers frequently lent credence to them. Ignatius, for instance, quoted from the so-called Gospel of the Hebrews. And regarding Clement of Rome, one source says: “Clement seems to know Christ, not through the Gospels, but through noncanonical writings.”
dunklaw 1 year ago
@dunklaw And your vidence for this....?
Admit it, you do not want Jesus to be God.
October31st1517 1 year ago
@October31st1517 orthodoxwiki. org puts it this way regarding Ignatius: -
They bear signs of being written in great haste and without a proper plan, such as run-on sentences and an unsystematic succesion of thought. Ignatius is the first known Christian writer to put great stress on loyality to a single bishop in each city, who is assisted by both presbyters (priests) and deacons. (cont.)
dunklaw 1 year ago
@October31st1517 (cont.) Earlier writings only mention either bishops or presbyters, and give the impression that there was usually more than one bishop per congregation.
dunklaw 1 year ago
@October31st1517 In the epistles of St. Ignatius the idea of natural immortality as a proper element of man's soul is completely absent. - so are you going to cherry pick teachings ?
dunklaw 1 year ago
@October31st1517 Regarding Clement:-
Clement never refers to any Gospel, but frequently refers to various epistles of Paul. Yet he calls them wise counsel, not scripture--he reserves this authority for the OT ("Old Testament"), which he cites over a hundred times (M 41-3). On a few occasions he quotes Jesus, without referring to any written source. But his quotations do not correspond to anything in any known written text, (cont.)
dunklaw 1 year ago
@October31st1517 (cont.) although they resemble sayings in the Gospels close enough to have derived from the same oral tradition. This suggests that the Gospels were not known to Clement. Yet he was a prominent leader of the Church in Rome.

If a pastor says that we have free will is that a cause to rebuke his teaching?
surshot56 1 year ago
@surshot56 It depends. There are Arminians whom I believe have hearts that are right with God. However when one takes freewill to it's logical conclusion, that is where we see the danger.
October31st1517 1 year ago
@October31st1517 That's very interesting. I must say however, that it does make sense that God would choose who would believe him since faith is a gift from God himself. I think what baffles the mind is how can God be completely sovereign and yet allow humans to have free will. This is something we are just going to have to ask him since he created everything.

Could someone from the Tulip camp explain 1 Samuel 15 v 11. Genuine question from curiosity about this doctrine. If God Himself repented over setting up Saul as king - as he turned back from following him - where is the foreknowledge here?
fulcrumpoint 1 year ago
God's "repenting" is His sadness over the wickedness of Saul. But this doesn't deny God's omniscience. An imperfect example (but still gets the point across) is a wise parent seeing a child plotting to steal candy. The parent foreknows the child will soon steal the candy, and is saddened.
My example shows that foreknowledge and repentance can be complementary. Of course there are imperfections in the example, God foreknows everything before He created, for example. But the point still works.

Pentecostalism is self-centered sensationalism through and through. The modern "Jesus" for sure.
stevestutz 1 year ago
I don't think that you can really consider using your free will to choose faith a "work." Works of the bible are quite litterally that, work. Such as, going out and helping people or donating $100 to your church. Doing these things won't save you, but if you are saved, you are more likely to do them.
If you believe the bible, then you believe God gave us free will. However, your beliefs say that we do not have free will and can only choose sin. So, which is it?
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi Pragmatism. "Free will" is nowhere in scripture. "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day." John 6:44. 'And He was saying, "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father." John 6:65. Blessings.

@MustardSeedish So then...God forced the fall and then decided to punish most of the people who came after it for something that He caused? Sorry, that doesn't make sense. If I had a kid and told him/her to go get me my shoes, I wouldn't spank him/her for bringing them to me.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi God decreed the fall. Just like He decreed Israel to kill the Amalikites babies. 1 Sam 15:3
October31st1517 1 year ago
@October31st1517 1 Sam 15:3 is a command from God to his followers. The followers still had the right to choose whether to follow God or not.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish Now, as for the verses that you said. Read a little bit further to John 6:45 "It is written in the Prophets: 'they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me." So, if we choose to listen to the teachings of God, we will come to Jesus.
John 6:64 "Yet there are some of you who do not believe.'..." showing that we can choose to believe.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi But there are some of you who do not believe " For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. And He was saying, "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father."
John 6:64 AND 65 Another perfect example of God's total omniscience. Thank for pointing that out. ;)
MustardSeedish 1 year ago 2
@MustardSeedish yes, the Father is omniscient. That was never in question. The question was whether He forces us to love Him or allows us to. I left out the rest of the verses for two reasons. 1) I was running out of remaining characters. 2) it was irrelevant to the topic at hand.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi I didn't write it.
MustardSeedish 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish What I'm trying to get at is that this kind of behavior is illogical and unbefitting of a loving God. Saying that God forced the fall and then is going to punish most of mankind for it doesn't make sense. Also, if God made Adam and Eve eat the apple since they had no free will in your religion, then why did he go looking for them and ask why they were hiding? He would already know what they'd done and where they were because he would have forced them to do everything.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi Do you love God or humanity more? God is loving, but sin in light of a perfect and holy God cannot exist. It's all about Christ and His glory. What you believe in is repackaged humanism my friend.
MustardSeedish 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish Honestly, I don't care about humanity, people can choose as they wish and I don't have any control over that...that's the glory of free will in action. If sin cannot exist "in light of a perfect and holy God," then how do you propose that God made Adam and Eve sin? Since, according to you the bible says nothing about free will.
Sorry, but I believe in the one and only God, not the teachings of a man. I use the logic and word that God gave me to guide me, not John Calvin.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish I've never read John Calvin nor did I quote him. I gave you two very powerful quotes from Jesus Himself that you can't refute. I could list many more. I admit there are mysteries of God that my finite mind can't understand this side of Heaven. That is what true faith is about. Trusting Him and His authority and not man.
MustardSeedish 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish I never said that you did, however, you do follow his teachings. So you want scripture? Deut 30:19, "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live (20) and that you may love the Lord your God..."
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish Gen 2:19 "...He (God) brought then (animals) to the man to see what he would name them" -shows that Adam had the free will to choose names.
Ecclesiastes 8:9 "...There is a time when man lords it over others to his own hurt." Man has dominated man to his injury, I.E. man is responsible for the bad things that has happened to him throughout history, not God.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi That was a privilege he gave to Adam. I hardly would compare naming the animals to a supernatural rebirth of the Holy Spirit. We have no control for our spiritual rebirth as we have control over our fleshly birth. God decrees because He is God, and not us. To be honest, I was like you a couple of years ago. All I can say is read and meditate on every word of scripture in prayer and ask God to reveal the truth to you.
MustardSeedish 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish I'll grant you that...but what about the other three quotes that I gave you?
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish Hebrews 11:7 "By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family." God warned him about the flood, but did not force him to save himself. Noah exercised his free will when making the ark.
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi God enables faith and repentance. It is not something we stupid, sinful, self centered humans can muster on our own. "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins." Acts 5:31, When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." Acts 11:18
MustardSeedish 1 year ago
@MustardSeedish No, God doesn't enable faith, He grants it to the repentant. In fact, read a bit earlier in acts 5:29 "Peter and the other apostles replied: 'We must obey God rather than men!'" I.E. they choose to believe God rather than men.
And also look at Acts 11:13 "He (not God) told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, 'Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved."
morsusmihi 1 year ago
@morsusmihi What I'm finding is that you're not making a proper contextual, historical exegesis on any of the text you are showing me and I'm sorry that I don't have all day to argue with you. I'm a busy mom and I have to go. We could go at this all day. God delivered me from this shallow Americanized lukewarm "Christianity", and I'm so glad for that. I pray He would deliver you too. He is more amazing and more powerful and more holy than you can possibly comprehend. I say this in love. Study!

In my opinion, you're worshipping the devil.

@morsusmihi A work is any action that you excercise to get right with God. Repenting does not save us, but it is a fruit that we have been saved. Freewill is a modern doctrine that must be shunned by the bible believer.
October31st1517 1 year ago
@October31st1517 Then how come all you people shout REPENT! If it does us no good? God didn't have to give us a way to heaven, but He did because He loves us. He wouldn't force us to love him because forced love is rape. He gave us the will to choose life or death, blessings or curses. He did not force us to fall and does not condemn us to hell for making us not believe!

@October31st1517 Wait a minute. You just said: "A work is any action that YOU EXCERCISE to get right with God." Then you said we don't have free will.
