I have no problem with the Rush card. I never paid a fee for activation and the $1 fee per transaction is refunded monthly. WHAT is the problem?! I have a checking account with a federal credit union, never have i had to pay a fee to use my bank or any service they offer, other than a $1 it costs for a certified check (teller check). Ive had it for 18yrs, and it's been totally free for me to use. No monthly minimums to keep it open. Why everyone isnt doing it is just plain stupidity to me...why give ur hard earned money away?

I'm white and own a rushcard for online shopping I learned that If you put funds equal to whatever you buy from online on the card and spend it immediately but if you put money on the card and leave it you'll notice 5.00-1.99$ fees in your transaction history plus they give your account number to other companies because i saw where a strange company had withdrawn 5.99 from my account when I only use the card for ebay and amazon purchases
Most of what you say is right but thats not quite the whole story. Some people can not get debit cards unless they are secured such as the Rush Card, many people have extreme credit issues, the type that call for this kind of service.
I remember the first time I heard of this rush card scam. Unbelieveable. They are charging you money to allow them to borrow your money. Something doesnt add up here.
Skip this bullshit and set up an account with a local credit union. Even if you have debts in collections you can still usually get a credit union account. They let me get and account and I will just say my credit isn't pretty.

I generally agree with you Dream however look at it from the other side. Why wouldn't Russell take advantage of an existing market segment? At least in this way the funds recirculate within our own community. If he doesn't do it someone else will so I'd prefer that he capitalize on it.

the bank cannot take money from you that you don't owe them. they don't just take from because it's wednesday. make sure you read the terms, acquiesce to policies and you can get along fine with the bank.
if you overdraft and owe money, it has to be paid back. you can't just avoid the bank and hope it goes away. i don't really even know what you're suggesting.
and think, at least when you overdraft your account, you still get the product. rush card would just be denied.

All pre-paid debit cards charges fees. it is up to you to decide if it is actually worth paying the fee. It is 19.95 to activate the card. $1 for every transaction (capped at $10 a month) $1.95 to withdraw money from an ATM plus what ever the ATM charges. free direct deposit. To add money anyother way its will cost $4-$10(depending how much you load on it) plus $1 transaction fee.

Reconsider before using this type of card. Why? There are what are called scheduled fees which are charged for each transaction you make using this card. Research schedule fees for this card and you'll discover that you are charged for loading the card, cancellation fees, fees for inquiring about your account over the phone, the list goes on. Also, these cards are not as protected as they would be with a regular checking account because they are not regulated like banks are.

I have a checking account with a federal credit union, never have i had to pay a fee to use my bank or any service they offer, other than a $1 it costs for a certified check (teller check). Ive had it for 18yrs, and it's been totally free for me to use. No monthly minimums to keep it open. Why everyone isnt doing it is just plain stupidity to me...why give ur hard earned money away?

I'm white and own a rushcard for online shopping I learned that If you put funds equal to whatever you buy from online on the card and spend it immediately but if you put money on the card and leave it you'll notice 5.00-1.99$ fees in your transaction history plus they give your account number to other companies because i saw where a strange company had withdrawn 5.99 from my account when I only use the card for ebay and amazon purchases

Most of what you say is right but thats not quite the whole story. Some people can not get debit cards unless they are secured such as the Rush Card, many people have extreme credit issues, the type that call for this kind of service.

I remember the first time I heard of this rush card scam. Unbelieveable. They are charging you money to allow them to borrow your money. Something doesnt add up here.
Skip this bullshit and set up an account with a local credit union. Even if you have debts in collections you can still usually get a credit union account. They let me get and account and I will just say my credit isn't pretty.

The hold transactions and wait for other small charges to go through and thus the overdraft fees.

I generally agree with you Dream however look at it from the other side. Why wouldn't Russell take advantage of an existing market segment? At least in this way the funds recirculate within our own community. If he doesn't do it someone else will so I'd prefer that he capitalize on it.
Beyond that this is just a symptom and not the actual issue. As you said, the folks targeted by the "check cashing" industry would be better served if they had some financial literacy. That's the real issue.

This CARD is not a scam, I have two bank accounts AND this card, and have had one for 4 years, the banks charge $30.00 for a overdraft, just to move money from one account to another. RushCard charges approx. $9.95 a month for the service, you have an option of plans/card designs. It's NOT like a cash checking place. It's great that you can open a bank account but many cannot because they owe from previous accounts. Not really because these banks are charging ridiculous overdraft fees and are worse than loan sharks. I once paid $36 for a penny overdraft. Our country is in a reccesion most people are in a financial hole and can not dig themselves out. People who are living paycheck to paycheck dont have the option of clearing up all their debts, they have to cash their checks now because bills are due now. Until the Economy changes cards like this will continue to be popular. It is what it is.

These cards and the rest like them allow people to have a debit card without worrying if the bank will take your money. They use them because they have no other choice.

@TheDreamReborn I disagree with you. This card can help people build or rebuild credit. Will your bank do that? A lot of people cannot open a bank account or need help with their finances. That's where you should educate them, not go after an innocent business man. Sooner or later banks hit anyone with hefty fees. Not everyone is in overdraft because they're careless. Sometimes it's poverty or other circumstances. You can manage Russ' fees better than predatory banks or check cashing places.

@mendene 99.9% of the time carelessness is the only factor in having bad credit. Especially in the African American community. Negroes want to keep up with the Jones' and end up with bad credit forcing them to cash their checks in those shady check cashing places which take half their income. It's fucking annoying to see people getting robbed in broad daylight. Russell's card is the same thing. Preying on the stupid who happen to be black in this case.

Russell Simmons is putting a product on the marketplace; He doesn't "push" it on anyone, Black or otherwise. Your point is well taken that some in the Black community misuse credit and financial services, but I think your efforts should be to try to educate the community, not attack Russell Simmons or insult people who lack the necessary information.

the bank cannot take money from you that you don't owe them. they don't just take from because it's wednesday. make sure you read the terms, acquiesce to policies and you can get along fine with the bank.
if you overdraft and owe money, it has to be paid back. you can't just avoid the bank and hope it goes away. i don't really even know what you're suggesting.
and think, at least when you overdraft your account, you still get the product. rush card would just be denied.

@TheDreamReborn Also you should do a survey of Rush Card users. You'll find that anyone who gets a rush card has credit and banking issues. It's worry free no one can take it including IRS I owed student loans and debts and because my Tax returns went to my Rush Card I was protected and was able to pay my rent.

@TheDreamReborn I have a RUSH Card and actually you have a few details wrong. First let me say that the Rush Card has saved me and my son from being homeless on 1 occasion. They don't take out a percentage, when you first get it you pay a fee of 19.99 This card has been specifically marketed for people like myself who have banking and or credit issues. I had 3 bank accounts seized and closed and all my money I worked hard for taken. I am a single parent it allows me to get paid & tax returns.

cont ...I spk from exp back in 07 i messed up my credit rating big time down to my OWN bad money management !! i was advised to get a "managed bank account" with no credit checks ! , but had to pay a £13.50 every month just so the bank could pay all my bills on time etc but my Debit Card was free to use though . anyways as soon as my situation improved a.k.a my personal credit rating i quickly went and got a normal Current account again . Did u know that free Current accounts are only possible bcoz they are financed by the profits of overdraft fees from other defaulting customers !! .... and yes pre paid cards are an absolute last dead end option if you have totally f***ked up yer credit rating. these cards are spreading like wild fire due to so many people getting into financial hardship and losing there free banking accounts or going bankcrupt or entering into legal 3-5 year IVA term agreements the banks win no matter what.

Keep in mind that all cards charge fees. There is no such thing as a "free" account unless you're a student. Read the fine print . Also remember that not all people can obtain checking accts.

Banks would not be in business without the fine print. Russell is a businessman, He's not doing this for charity. What he's doing is legal and scrupulous.

Hey, before you buy any card you should read the fine print. Don't just get it with out researching first. All pre-paid debit cards charges fees. it is up to you to decide if it is actually worth paying the fee. It is 19.95 to activate the card. $1 for every transaction (capped at $10 a month) $1.95 to withdraw money from an ATM plus what ever the ATM charges. free direct deposit. To add money anyother way its will cost $4-$10(depending how much you load on it) plus $1 transaction fee.

Reconsider before using this type of card. Why? There are what are called scheduled fees which are charged for each transaction you make using this card. Research schedule fees for this card and you'll discover that you are charged for loading the card, cancellation fees, fees for inquiring about your account over the phone, the list goes on. Also, these cards are not as protected as they would be with a regular checking account because they are not regulated like banks are.

Chexsystems is the credit evaluation system banks use to decide who is WORTHY of a checking account, & therefore , who is worthy of the CONVENIENCES I mentioned. I use a rush card. But only for online purchases that I wouldn't use my normal credit card on. I wouldn't dare use this as my main source of purchases. It IS a rip off. But so are thousands of other companies. He's not the real funding behind it, he's just a spokesman to draw in a certain crowd. That's advertising and marketing. It is wrong? Surely. That's capitalism. Make money and to hell with the best interest of others.

I tried goin to diff banks to open an accn, but they seen i was in debt to another bank so they quickly denied me. I used to cash my checks at the grocery store for $1.00...

I agree with you that the rush card is awful for the Black community and we should not get it. However, you are wrong in thinking it's "so easy to get a banking account". If you owe money to one bank you get placed on a blacklist for banking. And there is something "fishy going on" because they make money from high fees too. Check cashing might be the best option for SOME people. I had to do that until I was allowed a checking acct. Also, stop calling Black ppl stupid du. Edit. Peace.

You can believe whatever you want but fats are facts. Yes, I am black and Rich. I started using the rushcard after my divorce and bankruptcy. So , I kept using the card and I still do today. I kept $10,000 dollars on the card every month.

Read this and read it carefully. MANY banks, NOT all banks offer FREE checkings accounts. If you want a FREE checking account, seek and ye shall find. And if you live in NYC, you have absolutely no excuse to not have a FREE checkings account. NONE! Only an idiot will allow Russel and Kimora to rape their wallets/purses every month.
And I aid this before, I have a FREE checkings account. I've actually made interest on my money. Never paid a fee on it. I've had it 4 years now.
