Brainwashed is an anti-christian song. I doubt Jon is christian. Listen to the live recordings of "brainwashed". Matt says "this is a song about people being brainwashed, beliving things that just aren't true."
@encoreee90 I'm changing my words. The instrumental part is one of the best I've ever heard. Those drum fills are awesome and when solo guitar comes in. I have no words for it. Epic.
Tim might give Jon the finger if he dares even ask. Tim has three other projects/bands anyways. I wish Tim/Jon would just do the vocals together as on Gettysburg.
Some time ago somebody told me: if you are said to do this and to say that and think about these, only to be a good "believer", what kind of god would demand that? A good one?
As a Christian, I can still enjoy this song cause I understand the context in which it is being used. It's being used to support a SCI FI story they put together for these albums. They aren't saying this is real for goodness sakes. My fellow Christians needs to chill out. This not like Scientology where they took a sci fi story and believed it t be real.
I can see where you are coming from, but considering this I have a couple questions:
1. If it isn't Scientology then where does Jon Schaffer draw inspiration for his songs? In "Come What May" he sings that you should look for answers "within yourself" which happens to be an idea from Humanism - so I wonder if it is a coincidence or something else.
2 - If one day Schaffer came out and said that he indeed is a New Ager (or something like that) then would you still listen to Iced Earth?
This is pretty funny... Scientology and Humanism have nothing to do with each other, the former is a cult started by L. Ron Hubbard in the sixties, the latter a philosophical movement originating in the Renaissance, quite different things, really. As for the actual philosophical underpinnings of Jon Schaffer's lyrics, they're informed by the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche (which is as far from Scientology or New Age as can be).
Friedrich Nietzsche - the guy who said that "God is Dead" and followed the thought of " Übermensch" (which translates into "overman" or "human being" or "superman"). He went insane before he died and his close friends at his funeral said that he was "holy" (basically worshiped him like a god).
Humanism is not a term that is pinned on him, but if you check out his history and philosophy then he smells of humanism and occultism (sort of like L.Ron Hubbard).
Well, if you think that you can understand a philosopher's writings from a Wikipedia blurb then good luck to you (Nietzsche worshiped as a god by his followers? please...).Such straightforward literalism as yours is frankly alarming. I don't want to sound patronizing, but how many books in your life have you exactly read? WHAT do you know of culture or history or philosophy? Because at the moment you sound like an unversed illiterate spouting forth paranoid nonsense much akin to Hubbard's.
How did you know about Wikipedia quotes? You checked yourself ...hmmm?
Nietzsche probably influenced Thule Society which in turn influenced Hitler - whose Nazi party wanted to create a superman race .
I read enough about Nietsche to know that whatever garbage he has to say is of no interest to me. You could accuse me of being narrow-minded, but I'm just a kind of person who doesn't go pissing on the electric fence to see if it is really, really true that I will have a painful experience.
Nietzsche was critical of Judaeo-Christian philosophies and attitudes (and that's the main link to Iced Earth lyrics), his writings on the subject were heavily edited and twisted by his sister (who was intent on giving them an anti-semitic bend in accordance with her prejudices) after his death. That particular edition later ended up in Hitler's hands. Nietzsche himself was a staunch opponent of racism and anti-semitism and in fact broke all connexions with his sister exactly over that issue.
My point was NOT regarding Jews but the idea of superman race - which Hitler did adopt.
I am aware that Nietzsche claims that he wasn't an anti-semite . . . and he probably wasn't but he did berate Judeo-Christian beliefs which int turn can lead to anti-semitism. A group could be reading his book and say "Nietzsche is right, Jews and Christians are stupid because of their beliefs. Let's do what Nietzsche couldn't do and kill them off so that they don't teach their religion to our kids".
Furthermore, the "Ubermensch" is a spiritual ideal developed by Nietzsche and has nothing to do with race or eugenics, but is rather concerned with improvement of character through self-overcoming (Nietzsche's general philosophy is mostly concerned with morals, values and their relationship to human psychology, the question of how people deal with what they perceive to be truths and the ways they devise to cope with reality ("Come What May" is a song about that), very heavy philosophical stuff).
So, to sum it up for all the people who care not to read this debate: Nietzsche 's "Ubermensch" theory was not about the breeding of a superman, but the improvement of the self. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Yep. Pretty much. Nietzsche wrote using poetic metaphor (especially in "Zarathustra") which far too many people take at face value (his main concern was creating a new system of moral values which would not be rooted in religion, since by his time religious values were becoming quickly outdated and irrelevant (thus, "God is dead") and he found such "dead" values to be a very insidious notion that ultimately leads to nihilism).
No, you are totally right. It is all about becoming a higher class of being through freeing yourself of all moral inhibitions, by strengthening your mind and being able to spot phony ideas and prevent yourself from being dragged down with them.
You know I thought Iced Earth was a metal band. Not a Pop group whose only member noticed is the singer. Not the lead solo ripping guitarist. The bassist with the oh so sweet fretless solos they get in Iced Earth. Oh and lets not forgot the rythm guitarist who also writes all the song. Silly me. I must be confused,
the controversy this song inspires in these comments coincides nicely with the songs own words-- "resurrection will divide"... christ's resurrection causes controversy in real life and the debate you guys are having is kind of what Set Abominae describes in the song :P
