I guess you can say having to buy software to run on widows that is worse than free software on a mac is the "windows tax". If I paid $89.18 for a program I would expect it to work perfectly. In a small amount of defense for the windows side, you should do video editing on a desk top with minimum of 4 gigs especially if your running antivirus software in the back ground taking up processor power. I use 12 gigs of ram to edit HD video on my iMac.
That is why I am getting a Mac. If an entry level MacBook Pro can do that, then a second level or higher iac will do even better. PC, Using Pinnacle. lolz
I don't personally think this is biased at all. I just built a dual quad core PC( that is 8 cores!) and max its RAM, then run Sony Vegas Platinum 10 on it and the HD playback was so jerky it was a joke. I even tried software that supposes to make the most of multi core processors such as Cyberlink's PowerDirector 10 and although the initial playback was ok when I started adding a couple of effects the lag in responding and playback made the software a pain.
@snipperacoustics what a twat if you knew how to use that correctly it would of betten a mac any day run premier pro cs5.5 on it and then see which is better, i run premier pro cs5.5 on my high end 6 core pc and is faster than a mac twice its price !!!!
@LegoBoyLuc2456 Adobe Premier Pro CS5.5 is the only software optimised for Multi core PCs, however it retails at around £800 which proves my point really! If I need to pay an extra £800 for software in order for the PC to work properly then we are not comparing the same thing. Your PC cost an extra £800 compared to an imac with the free iMovie !!! :)/
@snipperacoustics well im from the profesinal background of editing my self and i edit 1080P video 5-6 times a week, i use a custome build high end pc that bets mac's twice its price its rock solid fast and cheap + better spec than most macs out there
@LegoBoyLuc2456 Thanks for the reply, you probably right as I bought an HP XW8400 from ebay used for £120 and upgraded it to a dual quad core and 8GB of RAM all for £320! and the PC is flying...just need to get an old copy of Premier pro in order to upgrade to the latest version and I'm doing some serious video editing...
By the way do you have an i7 kind of cpu on your PC ?
@snipperacoustics no one of the new AMD 6 core buldozers, tested against an i7 2600K and only 10 seconds slower when exporting a 10:30 min 720P video, AMD = 1.12 I7 = 1.02
this was a set-up. apple paid them to use a software that is 4 years older than imovie so that it can't handle the hd video. you can see how old the software is at 11:55 don't believe the bullshit that they say.
Yeah right, not a good review at all and quite biased towards Mac, you guys suppose to be objective and give that info to people...well after all I hope intelligent people will know better. I know both platforms and advantages and disadvantages here and there, at the end they are all made China anyway. Please be objective and stop the bullshit. If you will compare use same software or the closest equivalent , try harder next time.
Pinnacle is CRAP!!!!!! A piece off software that has great rewiews obviusly written by kindergartners, a user friendly interface (maybe), othervise very poorly written piece of shitware. no offence. And yeah, in EVENTUALY will render (after a couple of hr's) what you wanted instantly. Even on a high end computer (i7 or similar for example). May work for others, not for me....
This is absolutely bullshit. Gadget show, what the hell? Your recommending a mac because pinnacle failed? Pinnacle is not good with HD footage. I recommend sony vegas or premiere pro. Pinnacle is terrible software. And get an i5 processor with a dedicated graphics card and 4gb ram or more. An i7 is a must for full HD footage. These guys seriously don't know what they are on about. Mac is good though I admit, but it's down to the power, graphics card, RAM and software. Fail.
@alexandris03 I know, there was core 2 duos. I was mainly talking about the editing software and how you can use that software. Pinnacle is SHIT with HD footage. it does not render the footage like Imovie and final cut can in real time. I was talking about those types of processors because this is 2011 and people that are looking at this video and don't know much can get an idea. I am not stupid.
@T3MPOGAMiNG I am recommending these as I have looked into types of graphics cards, processors and things for a long time so DON'T get any laptop with a nvidia GT 540 or 525 card as they fail, some other PC's do so any of these ones will do.
Low budget -- samsung rc 520 (intel I5 2.3 with Nvidia 520m 1GB (get the 6Gb ram ) - £600
Medium budget -- Asus N53SN with I7 quad and Nvidia Gt555 2gb and 16GB ram (google asuslaptop for website)
@T3MPOGAMiNG I was thinking of that myself, but after effects, premiere and other software have troubles with the graphics cards (both the 525m and 540m) so I would not recommend it. I ended up looking at macbook pros :')
@F1NNAZ Could you help me? I'm in doubt between an iMac 27" i5 or mount a PC i7 2600K. I want a computer to use in video and audio editing and I will use at least two monitors. I intend to use these programs: Cubase, Sonar or ProTools and Sony Vegas or Adobe family... what the best configuration and parts?
Keywords: high performance and stability. Thank you!
@wwwLuizN Immediately, I can say an Imac is the better computer. Apples are better for editing in general, but if your looking to do special effects then go to the PC. Just choose a decent graphics card with it and it's all good. But the Imac should do everything you wish for. The Imac has a very good sound card built in too, have fun mate :)
@F1NNAZ Umm, there was no i5 or i7 in 2007. The whole intel i series didn't exist yet. But I do agree that if the pc and the software was better then it may have won.
@tlaroche38 as I said that was recommendations for now. I was talking about the software and what people should get for now, I know there was only core 2s back then. But yeah :) I wouldn't say final cut is good.
@F1NNAZ im running a sony i7 and Pinnacle takes a lifetime to do any tiny task, sure its easy to work, but dont expect your masterpiece done before 2013. The preview of your efforts do what suzy's did about 2 FPS!
Power director is better if you have the hardware, but again not so smooth.
my pc could heat my room when editing lol
most people want to just chop up clips, stick em together, add sound to taste, and transitionS, IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK?
If anyone is serious about editing, they wouldn't stick to an operating system and would edit short clips in After Effects or a more complex 3D editor and then use a 2D attacher, like FCP or Vegas.
PC is much worse at rendering footage than the Mac, I use a high end HP pavilion laptop with after effects and premiere pro... Sometimes I think the PC wants to kill itself. I'm getting an iMac.
pinnacle is rubbish just like PC's once i got my iMac i hated my PC and after one year of using myPC it had viruses and we had to pay another £600 to get a new one then tow years later a new one for £600 sop my mac was £1000 but all my PCs' were £1800 and imovie is good for first time editors like me but i am hoping to get final cut express on a macbook pro 15 inch if i have enough money that is.
Pc is ok. Had one for 12 years. Gets lots of viruses. Prone to slowness. But good for wide variety of programs available. Mac is good. Small, fast, better looking. Brilliant for editing etc and NO viruses :)
link me to 1 virus in the wild that has infected a users mac
yes ONE
hurry up !
if a mac is a toy why does ms spend all it's time copying apple , must mean pc's are cheap knock off 3rd rate copies of a toy , something from hong kong that you find at the bottom of a cereal packet ?
I love working on my mac, but for video editing I still prefer booting in to windows and using Sony Vegas. I have not yet tried FCP though - maybe there is a better option.
Dollar for dollar, Mac is a lot better option. I had a PC before and had nothing but problems. And the worst thing was that my very important work files were disappearing. The Windows OS ate them away. After working with Macs for the past 15 years, I will never go back to the trash called PC.
Apple hardware and their software are way better. Mac Pro desktop tower is a machine I use and its Intel Xeon processor is beyond reproach. My Mac is super reliable and it never crashes.
I'm not a Mac fanboy by any means, so when I comment against the Vaio, don't take it as such. With that said, one reason the lady was having issues was that she was trying to edit HD video on a LAPTOP! Most Windows-based laptops are not designed to do that kind of work regardless of what's said on the box. Mac laptops, however, are HD media friendly because of how the hardware is used. I wish you guys would quit being dickhead's by saying one's better than the other because of brand or OS.
I think the sony laptop was running on the battery, therefore the performance was at the lowest to save battery.
However, I've just converted to Mac yesterday and I'm really impressed with the quality of both hardware and software. I really feel sorry for the decade I spent with Windows.
Probably depends of the pinnacle software. I'm running Adobe Premiere and After Effects (more professional software) on a 13inch laptop with a 2.33Ghz Core i5 processor. It works quite well actually.
@60spaure well ive decided that pinnicale is crap. although it is simple and easy to use. i brought a new 17 inch 2.50 ghz laptop and you would still get 1 or 2 annoying little lags during the clip (if I upload FULL HD). so I have to settle with the HD setting on my camcorder that is one below full hd. i5 is really good i hear, so yours is bound to do well. but it says minimum requirements 2.40 ghz on pinnicle and its still not perfect. but thanx anyway
LOL i have a 2.16 ghz macbook pro with on board video and my pc is a quad core 2.8 ghz with 1 gig ati video card and guess what, stutter video with movie edit pro and/or adobe premier on pc while mac doesn't skip a beat
wow, they used pinnacle studio to test it against iMovie. Does anyone know how big Pinnacle Studio install is. It is a piece of crap. They should have tried again powerdirector
she probably didn't copy the files off the disk aond on to the hard drive and so it couln't read it fast enough. in the end it's all about the computer's hardware (asuming the video editing software is good) and the sony vaio has much higher specs
Try Sony Vegas for PC its a great editing software easy to use but very advanced still. It works on crap computers i used it on my 1 processor 700mb ram computer. It did lag, but i was able to edit non the less. On a 8gb quad core its like a dream, even with HD. best software for PC ever created ^_^ for special effects go for adobes after effects.
You can't compare the two, real editors use good pro software as in Final Cut Studio, also the 2 cameras were not alike, I bet that these were not equal machines either
2. mac used free editing software while the pc didnt
3. it doesnt matter with the difference of the two cameras, the pc lagged like hell, i dont think it would be any different if the other camcorder was used on this pc
@dmc040 The program she used is crap, no one in the industry touches that program its known to be crap. She had no knowledge of good software and so bought the crappier one. The camcorder used does matter, it depends on the framerate, resolution, what codec it records and exports in, And how the files are tranfered, Here you had A hard drive and blue ray. Both are diffrent. So yes it does matter.
@ShutUpAndListen79 You should first learn iMovie, which is basicly a cropped down version of final cut. As soon as you know how to use it, the step up to final cut isn't very complicated because you've learned the basics while working with iMovie.
Sony vegas movie studio is much better for a cheaper price. You can also do much more and you have the ability to preview the video at a lower quality, allowing for a faster playback.
@Scorge120 That is BULL SHIT, windows video editing is for pussy's. Final cut pro and after effects Are The Best! so buy a mac if you wanna work fast and professional
Haha ironic comment, I just recently got into mac OS for multimedia editing.
My comment had nothing to do with Macintosh to begin with, I was simply comparing PC options :p
But since you brought up Mac's...
Yes buy a mac if you have a bigger budget. If you don't want to fool around with your system and just want a solid platform; mac/OSX should be #1. However, if you know how to, or want to properly maintain a computer Windows will usually benchmark higher than a mac.
As for an editing suite, it all comes down to personal preference and whatever you are comfortable with using. As Sony Vegas, Premiere Pro, Final Cut and Avid Media Composer are all considered to be the "big boys" of video editing. But for my purposes since I'm running both platforms, I go with Premiere Pro. It also has THE BEST compatibility with After Effects (Adobe dynamic link rocks!)
Why would you test using two totally different pieces of editing software? They should have had Premiere installed on both systems, then that would be a proper test.
*sigh* Ok listen. This video is not ligit. We are in the world of the internet so let me show you the reality of this video. Mac is very good at advertising, so its not to crazy to say that this could be a cheap way of persuading the public. "take notice that the video is all about recording HD, yet it is not put on you tube in hd.
This video is legit, it's a show in the UK called the Gadget show and it is not broadcasted in HD so it cannot be uploaded in HD. Anyway, they should have used Premier, but that is very expensive software.
(because pcs are aiming for there netbook products this would be the ideal way to cast this video to "pc" users. This video shows a viao. a very highly respected pc, and they function very well. the pinical software they are using is for normal quality
People listen, Macs have problems as well as pcs. The basic line is that it is your hardware that desides how well a computer is run. OS have a key role to play with use of there kernals. All in all, I believe all a Mac is, is an avrage glorified computer with decent Built in software. I'm not saying there not good,i just hate to see people waist so much cash on these machines.
With Premiere I can edit in the native format with ease. When you transcode to an intermediate codec some data is being lost. It might look good but in the end it is not going to look better than the original video clip. You are inded wasting time transcoding. I coud run circles around you using Premiere Pro and a $600.00 PC.
Pc is a peice of shit. Slow buggy had a ton of malware on my pc. takes forever for my files to open and was just a piece of shit period! even when brand spanking new out the box. Ever since i got my macbook pro daaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmm nigga!
to take a video editing software that doesn't require pre-rendering and that is optimised. Nowadays, almost all of those softwares, including vegas, premiere, powerdirector, pinnacle and more all have 30 day free trials so be sure to check them before buying such software.
I found lots of video editing softwares very buggy, as well as video convertion softwares. 90% of those just don't work how they should.
First of all: Movie maker wouldn't have lagged at all. It's the software that wasn't good, not her computer. The video editing software on the PC was poorly optimized and that's why it lagged.
I tried premiere on my computer and it just didn't worked well. All of the videos lagged when viewing them in real time. I hadn't had any problem like that with movie maker or power director.
there was just something wrong with her laptop. and firstly it says Mac vs PC, there not comparing a PC to a Mac though its a laptop. I have had no problems with my pc or laptop with editing films what so ever and there alot faster than any macbook hands down i know this because my friends just bought 3x macbooks one each and i was thinking of getting one, had ago of the 3 of them and they were dreadful slow as hell except for the instant turn on and turn off there crap so wont get one.
Frankly, I'm not really sure what you just said. Regardless, I don't know how that guy got HD to edit so smoothly on a Macbook, mine lags like the PC in this video (but at least it outperforms my windows desktop.)
PC can absolutely POWN Macs at Video Editing, even HD. It has VERY LITTLE to do with the computer, but basically the person using it and their knowledge of the video editing program. I have mastered Sony Vegas 8 Pro and am working on After Effects CS4, both on a PC. My friend did a video with iMovie on his Mac and i did a video with my software, and he stood no chance, i wasted him in a landslide. So there really is no way to determine which computer is better, just use the better software.
wtf you're a prick, don't you know 90% of the advertising company uses Macintosh, you're the first ever person that ive seen to say that "PC can absolutely POWN Macs at Video Editing, even HD".. cmon you're joking right?
@dinggley imagine the pc you could get for the price of a mac, or should i say 3 for the price of a mac. i know macs are very good and everyone worth thier salt uses it for media, i mean everyone, if you can afford it, i just bought a quad core pc with high spec and its sweet, and equivilant mac would be a grand or more easily. its up to the person. a mac is a chefs knife and a pc a multi survival knife, good at most stuff but never the master

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
umm you cant compare sony Vegas or Premier to iMovie, if you did actually buy that software both would cost alot and you'd be better of with a Mac and final cut studio, for the ultimate high end editing. Or even final cut express easily compares to them both
anything to do with movies and editing, always go to Apple and there macs, the software is very easy to use and you can get better versions of movie editing software, which also are very easy to use
Uh wow, oh unfair is that! My friend and I also tried to edit the same footage we had and my friend had the exact same mac the guy in the vid had but the HD didn't work for me and I have a Sony SR with 2.93 GHz with not Pinnacle but Sony Vegas Pro 8 and it was perfectly fine if I can say even amazing. So in my case, get a vaio and vegas for editing.
Could it be because she imported the footage off of the disc and it wasn't on the hard drive but running from the cd drive? The other guy had no problem because he was running firewire from the camera. Just a thought.

I wish you guys would quit being dickhead's by saying one's better than the other because of brand or OS.

my pinnacle studio 12 lags in hd too. im running a 2.16 ghz laptop. i dont know if its pinnicale or my laptop
tag1989 1 year ago
@tag1989
Probably depends of the pinnacle software. I'm running Adobe Premiere and After Effects (more professional software) on a 13inch laptop with a 2.33Ghz Core i5 processor. It works quite well actually.
60spaure 1 year ago
@60spaure well ive decided that pinnicale is crap. although it is simple and easy to use. i brought a new 17 inch 2.50 ghz laptop and you would still get 1 or 2 annoying little lags during the clip (if I upload FULL HD). so I have to settle with the HD setting on my camcorder that is one below full hd. i5 is really good i hear, so yours is bound to do well. but it says minimum requirements 2.40 ghz on pinnicle and its still not perfect. but thanx anyway
tag1989 1 year ago
Pinnacle did the same thing to me. My computer met all the specs-but it still lagged and slowed down. All and all, I wasted 120.00 on this software.

3. it doesnt matter with the difference of the two cameras, the pc lagged like hell, i dont think it would be any different if the other camcorder was used on this pc
dmc040 1 year ago
@dmc040 The program she used is crap, no one in the industry touches that program its known to be crap. She had no knowledge of good software and so bought the crappier one. The camcorder used does matter, it depends on the framerate, resolution, what codec it records and exports in, And how the files are tranfered, Here you had A hard drive and blue ray. Both are diffrent. So yes it does matter.

@ShutUpAndListen79 You should first learn iMovie, which is basicly a cropped down version of final cut. As soon as you know how to use it, the step up to final cut isn't very complicated because you've learned the basics while working with iMovie.

yvobaas 11 months ago
@yvobaas
Scorge120 11 months ago
@yvobaas
Scorge120 11 months ago

squeeeeenis 2 years ago
People listen, Macs have problems as well as pcs. The basic line is that it is your hardware that desides how well a computer is run. OS have a key role to play with use of there kernals. All in all, I believe all a Mac is, is an avrage glorified computer with decent Built in software. I'm not saying there not good,i just hate to see people waist so much cash on these machines.

AndrewsAwesome 2 years ago
With Premiere I can edit in the native format with ease. When you transcode to an intermediate codec some data is being lost. It might look good but in the end it is not going to look better than the original video clip. You are inded wasting time transcoding. I coud run circles around you using Premiere Pro and a $600.00 PC.

to take a video editing software that doesn't require pre-rendering and that is optimised.
Just reply if you have any questions.
60spaure 2 years ago
First of all: Movie maker wouldn't have lagged at all. It's the software that wasn't good, not her computer. The video editing software on the PC was poorly optimized and that's why it lagged.
I tried premiere on my computer and it just didn't worked well. All of the videos lagged when viewing them in real time. I hadn't had any problem like that with movie maker or power director.
So you can go both mac or pc, but make sure

PC can absolutely POWN Macs at Video Editing, even HD. It has VERY LITTLE to do with the computer, but basically the person using it and their knowledge of the video editing program. I have mastered Sony Vegas 8 Pro and am working on After Effects CS4, both on a PC. My friend did a video with iMovie on his Mac and i did a video with my software, and he stood no chance, i wasted him in a landslide. So there really is no way to determine which computer is better, just use the better software.
Pr0H4ck3rVids 2 years ago
Right, so you're comparing a video you created on high-end software to a video created on (what is basically) a OS X version Windows Movie Maker?
What did you think would turn out better?
Try it again with him using Final Cut Studio 6 (FCP, Aperture, Motion etc.) and see what happens.

i dont give a shit if 90% of the advertising companies use macs, the other 10% could do just as good if not better :D
it really is personal preference, and how much experience the person at the helm of the computer has
in my mind, i will always be a PC fan, but high-end, even HD or 1080p, video editing can be done on either
