bran is a weak player, as are most overly flashy drummers. show me a drummer that can play heavy/loud and still do some awesome fills and i say he wins.
Technique (e.g. synchrony, sub-dividing beats, syncopation, and diversity) are the cornerstones of technical drumming. And, if you've seen Bran live, he is just as good as on album. I'm no fanboy, but I've been playing drums for 18 years, and this man has it...Now if you want raw, unbridled power + non-standard beats (which Bran is very good at, mind you) you should check the orig. drummer for 'The Esoteric' also played for 'Today is the Day'.
They are all accomplished and very good. Beyond that, its personal taste. A little sloppiness is essential to a good rock/metal sound (intentional and controlled of course).
I've seen Mastodon and i'm looking forward to Baroness coming to L.A. I don't know Baroness's material as well, but i think there may be big things in their future. I hope so at least, they have such a unique sound.
I went to Radford with the Drummer and partied at the Rathouse with em. They always had the best parties and Baroness used to play all over around VA Tech and Radford. BARONESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!RAWK!

yes, sound quality is much more than awful^^
But this Band kicks so much ass. I like them a lot more than Mastodon although, i think its stupid to compare these two bands.
