  • Stop talking about tensions between the French and English. Show the nice city that Montreal is.

  • Foie Gras..

  • @TrollOvgrimness

You're wrong, Montreal is a bilingual city and even more French then English. When are being served in restaurant or bar, employe talk in French first then in English, banner are in French , the metro is in French. Never say that montreal is an english city, cause it's not

  • INDOOR FOOD YOU NEED TO BECAREFUL, BECAUSE YOU COULD NOT SEE HOW PROPER FOOD IS PREPARED, BUT STREET FOOD YOU CAN SEE THEM PREPARE MOSTLY.

  • wow, that old bag at 7:00 has no clue what she's talking about. english quebeckers don't enjoy meals?

    maybe her minds going.

  • Poutine, good, very good. Slurp...

  • Quebec is jealous of how lame Quebec city is and how awesome Montreal is. And Montreal is an english city btw this video is wrong. Although, I try to avoid the eastern end of the city. Since, it is lame. ANd fail. French is the least romantic thing ever. Are the nazis romantic?

  • Hey madame Kayler, i love how you imply that anglophones aren't quebecois. espece de dinosaure.

  • I don't agree with how they characterize Toronto or Anglophone Canada.

  • Like the market woman says, what makes Montreal a good food city is that everybody (French, English, all the rest) takes food seriously. In a lot of cities, if you have a crappy meal and you tell people, they say, "Oh you should have gone to this other place..." In Montreal, it's almost all good. The way you recognize a bad restaurant is that it's gone out of business. That said, this is a really shallow piece by somebody who doesn't understand the city or the culture.

  • MMMMM. Every time I'm in Montreal I know I will eat well. Much love from Edmonton.

  • I am a french guy from Montreal. 100% Quebecois! Im proud to be from here... come in my family in christmas time for the dinner and you will understand what it's all about... or you'll die from over eating!

  • I like Canadians more than Americans, but whenever I see someone eat poutine I just have to hurl......And that could be served as poutine as well! Before anyone asks; I'm Dutch......

  • im going here tomorrow

  • LOL PFK

  • Thank you for the videos. This is an exchange for ABNR, which has been banned from youtube by travel channel.

  • mcdonalds even have poutine on the menu in quebec

  • what a sexy ass babe, shes looks so fuckable

  • @dayzedaway who that old lady?

  • where is the street food? its all about the french food in different restaurant.

  • @mohmandkhan Unfortunately the Quebec laws do not permit food to be sold on the streets, due to sanitary reasons.

  • @mohmandkhan But we still have lots of excellent small restaurants where you can eat your lunch during the week and weekend! =D

  • sea water????

  • @diddymuck It's a mousse made out of codfish broth :P

  • this is the only one I don't like. I can't like "french" because of their narrow mindedness like this.

  • Street food? Those are legit restaurants. Canada doesn't really have street food. Kinda boring.

  • Where was the street food???

  • so..this is more about politics than food?

this look like a bad info tourist video with lot of cliche, hope no one will judge Montreal from that!

and also, Montreal does'nt want street food vendor because:

1- all the junk that will end up on the street (paper plate, old napkins)

2-Sanitary laws, they don't have enough inspector to check restaurants and food store, so even less to check if a street vendor does'nt sell rotten meat

Anyway, Montreal is WAY more than what this video show!!

  • @bekkett maybe they should spend less on language police and more on inspectors. Street food works in places like Portland OR.

  • I don't get it! Where's the street food?

  • @Ethix127 Have you even been one inch in the city? If not you are talking right out of your ass

  • actually on second thought I won't try Au Pied de Cochon. I am a slight health nut

  • @acestarone Once in your life won't kill you I think. Many of my friends went there once and were amazed! =D

  • Poutine in Montreal is good depending on where you go. I had one that used this nasty fake beef gravy. it was gross.

i will def go to Au Pied de Cochon next time I am in Mtl

  • excellent video. last time i visited Montreal I wanted French food but my friends so they did not recommend it. I will try it there next time anyway

  • IH8QUEBEC please do me favor.. go get a life ;)

  • I am francophone from Montreal and living in Toronto. The food scenes in Toronto in Vancouver are more varied and as good than in Montreal. As far as french food is concerned, I have eaten it in France and a lot of other places and the best French dishes are found in.... New York!!!!!

  • I live in Montreal and went to Toronto last summer.. Both ities have great food but i gotta give Toronto the thumbs up for the street merchants.. Because of a stupid law here we are not able to egt street hot dog vendors, etc. Would be great for montreal to open up a bit.

  • i am from algeria and I think that the quebequois N,ont aucun plat culinaire typiquement quebequoi.

  • thats not a street food!! are u joking?

  • Damn, I want a poutine. I had a less authentic version of the dish at Pommes Frites in the East Village of New York (still tasted awesome) however the dish in the segment was about 5 times as big as my serving.

I've only been to Anglo canada on a stupid chinatown bus tour route (which I despise, I much prefer exploring by myself). I'd love to visit Québec and I love the food and party scene up north.

  • when you troll try to be more creative.

  • Good job but we need some more cowbell!

  • I don't understand ur definition of "Street Food" here, cuz my understanding of "Street food" is like a hotdog stand or something similiar like that. However, what you showed us in the video are all foods served in restaurants.

  • they refer street foods to foods being sold in streets for a cheaper price and the accessibility.

  • just say that your'e An anglophone montrealer. learn some french and you would be ok.

  • the french from france speak grammaticaly, but the french from quebec speak the slang french more broken down, just like American eglish and actual english from england!

  • >>vraie dient bizzar

  • That old red eyed lady is ignorant and out of it

  • In fact, we have nothing from France.

  • Listen closer 1:20-1:29

  • by the way, they are not that french either, trust me

  • or she considers the southwest of the united states geographicaly and bilogicaly central america or the witch is racist in her conception, ofcourse

  • 10:29 "...and this is the cock"

  • "white bitches are very good" 9:59

  • 9:56 she refers to the "internets"

  • Man listen I love montreal i wanna go live there to learn french and have a good time. I dont understand why people can't just get along and have fun.

  • That would explain your lack of sobriety.

  • Eccch! Duck in a can? Bleh!

  • i live in ottawa, its about 2 hours from montreal, and almost everyone there speaks english, everyone i talked to when i go there speaks english, all the menu's have english translations, i never talked to anyone who was like, je ne pas parle english, its a totally bi-lingual city, noone gives a shit if you talk english or french, there is no language issue

  • thats the way to be

  • Obviously you probably only visited downtown or tourist places. If you lived here, it would be a different situation...

  • @bunmeguy "there is no language issue" that is not true in the slightest. I am an anglo who's lived in Montreal my whole life. Everyone is not english, there are people who will only speak french. French being my second language hurts me when applying for jobs. You've probably visited the english pockets of the city, but they are really just pockets. Montreal is a french city and while there are many bilingual's that are still many people, english and french, who speak just one language.

  • @bunmeguy Uh disagree. I'm from Montreal and live here (and I am anglophone), and there are definitely language issues. Francophones DEFINITELY give a shit if you can't speak French, especially if you're in the work place (which usually has French managers/bosses). Maybe you don't realize it when you're visiting because you're only interacting with locals in the way that you are the customer and they are serving you, but in other situations there can be problems.

  • Pretty nice City^^

  • comment me and send me message

  • Al Jazeera should bring out a daily newspaper here in the UK. The potential readership is massive for a international/daily newspaper aimed at Asian and Muslim readers. Plus liberal and intelligent people who want to read about news stories from around the World that are not reported!

  • I'm tired of this language issue. Who cares what language you speak. Everyone should just learn Esperanto.

  • Not everyone is a geek.

  • wow. Grow the fuck up!!!!

  • They are silhouettes. Way to racist.

  • Quebec's really fine but the french accent is so hard to understand. they are stuck in the 17th century lanaguage wise.

  • That's an ignorant statement. You don't think Quebecois French changes over time? That's like saying that American English is 17th century.

  • @BayviewFinch exact, but a lot of people dont want to know it, alot of paranoia too.....

  • @BayviewFinch

Actually, some studies suggest that Quebec's french is probably closer to what french was even in France during the 16-17th.

No offense behind that. It fact it does tell us that French from France not understanding Quebecois is just snobism...

  • dude the quebec accent is absolutely nothing like the actual fench accent from france. Trust me ive seen a person from quebec and a person from france have a conversation and they had a hard time understanding each other...

  • @nubxpro French have a hard time understanding quebecois. different.

  • Beautiful documentary of how culture can divide people even at the point of what do they eat. But Farrah is just wow...

  • Everyone should check out the Niagara Food Festival its held every year in Welland and Welland is a large French community for all in Montreal that want to move to a smaller city its about 51 000 great place for a family they are building a brand new french catholic high school its a great city come visit WELLAND we welcome you to move here.

  • 3) The mcbinn's irish pub story is a fraud, this journalist should have investigated this one thoroughly. Inspectors visited that pub because they didn't want to serve clients and had menus in english only. The old ads on the wall aren't subjected to bill 101 either, they are considered art/cultural.--Thank you Brother Malekyo

  • Excellent reportage, 2 bad she focuses 2 much on the language issue, seriously it's not a day 2 day issue that montrealers have to deal with.

    1) there's no language police, inspectors go to buisnesses only after complaints from citizens. It's not pro-active like a police force.

    2) trademarks aren't subject to bill 101, so companies don't have to change them. But some decide to change their name to be more in tune with the local market, it's a marketing decision first.

    ---Brother Malekyo

  • The zealousness of the Office de la langue?

There is no such thing as the Québec Language Police. The general objective of Québecs French Language Charter is to protect the right of every citizen of Québec to work and receive services and information in French in Québec something that has often been problematic especially in Montreal even though French-speakers are the majority of the population.

The Gazette has always been a racist newspaper and have no idea about our realities.-Br. Teve

  • Talk about "street food", super hot Aljazeera correspondent Farrah Esmail can take me out for dinner anytime! Great piece, lets see more of her work.

  • 2) trademarks aren't subject to bill 101, so companies don't have to change them. But some decide to change their name to be more in tune with the local market, it's a marketing decision first.

  • It's good that you bring these stuff up, becuase the journalist was trying to indirectly mock quebec for fighting hard to preserve it's french culture. This is the problem with people who only speak english and don't want to learn another language to enrich themselves with!

  • Excellent reportage, too bad she focuses too much on the language issue, seriously it's not a day to day issue that montrealers have to deal with.

    1) there's no language police, inspectors go to buisnesses only after complaints from citizens. It's not pro-active like a police force.

  • See this is what I mean, she is trying to indirectly mock Quebec for fighting to preserve it's french culture. & U & I knwo language is alwasy at the heart of perserving any culture. I like how that Iranian guys just slpeed her in the face by telling her that the state french immiersion courses are a good thing. If these things had been going on in Anlo-hone canada she wodl not be bringing this stuff up at all, since she herself is white anglo-girl coated in caramel-brown!

  • I heard a story a few years back about a pet store owner who got into trouble with the OLF because the store parrot spoke only English.

  • 9:52 INTERNETS?????? LOL!

  • they are CANADIAN, not french, like me. and they are perfectly fine. much cleaner and educated here than they are in france;)

  • I love what you said ...yes I wanted also to shout " Fucking french twats" , number one fucking hypocrites....

  • I am a Canadian from Toronto as well...I find it so interesting to see I knew so little about Montreal. Very interesting doc.

  • The zealousness of the Office de la langue?

  • Oh please grow up! English Canada, and anlgo-phone societies worldwide do these thing to any community that doesn't speak english andyou have no problems with that. I just think your too lazy to learn another language like most anglo-phones and want people everywhere all over the world to speak english. Plus like malekyo says it's not big deal. And funny how anglo-phones espect everyone to comply with their laws yet they do not want to respect the laws of other people! U R the hypocrite!

  • I support people like Hugo Chavez from Venezuela, and Mr. Morales of Bolivia, do you? A trouble making jerk like you is what the World is fighting against its not even worth conversing with you because you have nothing but hate in your heart. I didnt do whatever it is that has made you hatefulmaybe you just hate being born?

  • If you do support people like chavez and morales, then why do U have problem w/ pple who are fighting hard to keep their identity. U know how imposing D Anglo-phones can B in thier soft & hard power projection through D rest of D world. All the french favoring laws in quebec will be needed to make sure quebec doesn't lose it's french indeitity. B4, in PDVSA 2 work at any job you needed 2 know perfect english, but that is not d case anymore, thax 2 chavez.

  • I support the French Culture, et Je parle Francais. I just don't support radicals that try to justify reasoning for their extreme prejudice. You did not even live here and therefore do not know how people get along. I lived in Quebec for 47 years...where do you live, Argentina?

  • NO but I have been there several times. I have a cousin in Montreal.I think this chick really treid to make a mockery of Quebec tryign to keep it french identity using soft language. And these inforcement only happen form people complaining! Then they go and investigate. Don't youthink the anglo-phone world uses english only to justify their prejudices much moe than any french candaien. If this law never existed, Quebec woudl have lost it's french culture just like Luoisina did.

  • Language is the heart and soul of a Culture

  • I'm from Montreal, BIENVENUE!to ALL

  • Vive le Quebec!

  • raton, any ability to stay on topic would be appreciated.

  • Britain is in Europe.

  • 9:52 ..... she didn't just say 'internets' did she??

  • I would forgive her slip up and give her a break since the president of the USA George W. Bush can say "internets" why can't she :))

  • Another great example of the most powerful man in the world successfully lowering the bar way too many notches :)

  • My future home in a matter of months.
